How do change this?
Where is the main issue that's holding us back from landing a big name?
Is Sheens going to help change perception like gus to the dogs?
Playing finals football 3 times in 21 years.
Yeah I know this...but TPJ knew this and still negotiated with us...seemed close to
signing too...Is there another factor atm stopping us landing a big name?
Honestly, I think that is the biggest problem.
What do you reckon is our biggest hurdle mate?
I really do believe it is our history as a club, 3 finals in 21 years is difficult to sell. Especially to the modern day player, a lot of young people today want instant gratification so it is difficult to find established players who are willing to go in for the long haul of maybe not playing finals for a couple of years.
I really do believe our best way out is to attack the best juniors from across the country, have the pathway systems to build those players into quality NRL players. To do this we need to attract the best 100-150 game players to the club that we can attract to support the youngsters coming through.
We're going to lose a lot of fans with these long term goals. We seem to consistently be playing catch up. Hopefully when we create a sustainable system of continued success, we are ahead of the others, not neck and neck. It's a very saturated market and we need to be so much better than our neighbours
I don't really see the alternative though, I don't think the way the bulldogs is attacking it is going to lead to long term success and think they will be in the hole again in a couple of years.
I disagree to some extent. To get around the salary cap and succeed, you need:
- a solid core of first graders on standard money. Even better if they are on unders to stay with their mates and achieve success
- a small group of star players that add the spark, and produce performances that help everyone else in the side produce their best football
- a group of youngsters that you are exposing to first grade to see where they fit in
- when the first group start wanting to be paid in line with the 2nd, you move them on and replace them with the 3rd
- if the 3rd group do not show the required talent, you move them on and get new youngsters
Problems start to come when you need to pay players in the first group the equivalent of money in the 2nd group. We have fallen into this trap, see Packer, Mbye Reynolds etc
We do not have either of the first 2 groups. Our core first graders are either not up to it (Garner, JTJ etc) or massively overpaid (Brooks, Doueihi, Nofa). We don't have a single marquee player and are throwing under prepared kids to the wolves in a poor side.
We are not going to get the Marquee players until we start winning, we need to improve that group of core 1st grade players.
