Religion and Race - a new cornerstone for us?

I understand it's everyone's belief but what sort of backlash do you think there would be if someone like Aaron Woods won the man of the match in origin 1 and came out and said 'It was all me, as i don't believe in god'. Now i don't know his beliefs but i reckon he would cop abuse from all corners of the globe. I'm totally happy for our players to believe in what they believe in but as they are representing their club they need to be mindful that they may upset or annoy certain sectors of the community.

I'll just leave this here

Matthew 6:5-6
"When you pray, don't be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them. I tell you the truth, that is all the reward they will ever get.
But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you."

Each to their own, but this is a team sport and would prefer to see the team together after a win, regardless of their religious beliefs, rather than half the team kneeling with the opposition.
Why do they need to express their beliefs in the middle of a football, field? Surely they could do it at some point in private, with or without fellow believers.
Religious belief can easily go to excluding those with alternate views, or violence against those that do not conform.
My brother was King hit at a school party because someone took offence to his "Jesus did it for the chicks" t-shirt. It is a shame that the person did not adhere to the turn the other cheek teachings

Id rather they do this than rape and murder people

I'll take a bloke who shares a prayer in public over a wifebeater or thug who nearly curb stomps a bloke to death every day of the week.

I hate religion, I quite honestly loathe it, but one of my core principles is that people should be allowed to do as they please as long as it doesn't infringe on the rights of others. I prefer to watch a couple of people share a group prayer directly with their god rather than watch them sit in front of a designated middle man who is designed to extract the most money out of them as they can under the auspices of a deity.

i'm all for anything positive, however i saw our boys sharing a prayer with the other team recently.
not into that, prefer some heavy rivalry.

Yeah times have changed in my day we prayed before the game that we would beat the crap out of the other side and after the game those who hadn't gone to casualty would share a beer and a few yarns.

LOL Abraham…I knew this topic would draw out the forum's resident religious nutjob.
You mentioned downsides, I gave you one.
Personally I think being religious shows weakness but thats just me. I like to stand on my own two feet.

Mate, having the guts to show your faith in public and copping plenty of s*** about it is anything but weak…

Mate giving credit to an invisible entity rather than the real live human beings who made your achievements possible is weak.

But how do you know they are praying to win , lose or even draw

Perhaps they are thanking God none was harmed

It's not harming you , what's the issue honestly Stryker ??

I hate this lovey dove garbage thats been brought into the game with their prayer group crap. All hugging and reciting chants to an invisible fairy or whatever it is…it's bad enough one of our prop forwards wears a hairband but this looks damned ridiculous.

So is that a no from you Stryker. :roll

I am concerned about mixing religion with sport. Although I'm an atheist, I support the right of any person to follow a religion of their choice but public figures such as sorts men and women should understand that public displays of religiosity, in places like a football stadium can be offensive to others. It seems to be tolerated by spectators and TV viewers at the moment but just wait until a muslim player prostrates himself on the ground after a try; in my opinion the tolerance will come to an abrupt halt. Far better to nip this in the bud and request that players thank their deity away from the public gaze and I hope that the NRL acts before we start to see ugly incidents occurring.

Agree mate ,
Each to their own when it comes to ones beliefs , but leave all the prayers and religious crap in the changing rooms IMO .
It's a game of footy FFS !

**Next thing we'll be having seperate spectator areas for different religions .**

:roll I can see a movie script in that - directed by Mel Brooks.**

Obviuosly this thread isn't going to change anyone's religious belief, but we have already had 1 player come out and say that he credits his success to finding god. To me thats a positive. I don't care what floats their boat as long as they play good football.

If we have players who feel they are being isolated or discriminated against because they don't follow the same beliefs then thats an issue and it should be dealt with. Till then what we all think doesn't really matter does it?
