Return to lidcombe - march 1

The Wests Archives have 1 of the verticle posts. It is cut up into sections.

I don't think Campbelltown ever used the posts as I remember even as a kid they were never really that big

The pratten park posts ended up at a a local high school in campbelltown although they wouldn't be the originals I suspect.

Correct, John Therry Catholic Highschool at Rosemeadow

I reckon it is great they are playing a game at Lidcombe oval. The ground is in surprisngly good nick, it is a pretty decent hill, more than enough for a NSW cup game.
It would be nice to play a WT game at Lidcombe, but i think as others have said it would cost them revenue, we prob can t afford to give away revenue at this stage.
I remember them moving away from lidcombe in the 80's, I was very young, but my grand dad took me to watch Bulldogs play Wests and telling me it would be the last time we would come here cause they were moving to the country
Hardly the country these days , but for a bloke who thought we he lived at Padstow was the outer suburbs and didn't drive, it prob was forever a way.

Not just revenue… I doubt the facilities at Lidcombe are even remotely close to NRL standards. But for a state cup game it is a good move.

I only ever went to just the one game at Lidcombe and it was in 1983 at the end of the Magpies Golden era, being heavily involved in bush footy it was an early season game before our comp kicked off but I went to the game with my late brother and a future Country 1sts half back in Chris Storrier who was the sole Maggies fan amongst us.
I hope to make this nostalgic trip back to this historic ground, they used to pack 20 000 in there when the old Fibros V Silvertails rivallry was in full swing, even though I was a Tigers fan I'll have to obtain an old Wests jumper and make the trip from the bush, it's good to get excited about League again especially when Wests are doing it tough these days.

I'm not sure if its Lidcombe Oval or Orana Park that I can remember as a kid on TV. It was regularly on the ABC Saturday game, but I remember a bike track and large crowds with huge Black & White Checkered Flags… It always look fun!

I was one of those flag wavers Watto. I still stay in contact with some of the guys to this day. We travelled everywhere. When we moved to Campbelltown Jim Masterton gave us all of the Magpies advertising from Lidcombe.

I ended up making a sign with the material that hung off the Masterton blimp. It was a a huge sheet with a professionally screenprinted magpie flexing his bicep. Under it was written .. "For The Magpies". Who remembers it?? We were all on TV every TV game.

They wouldn't be far off scabby Leichhardt would they?? The sooner that place becomes the epicentre of an earthquake the better. Absolutely apalling when it comes to facilities. I think WT should be playing all of their games at ANZ or Campbelltown. Leichhardt would be ok if it was upgraded but it never will.

Everyone knows Leichhardt is a little behind the times, but calling for the ground to be destroyed is a little harsh, deliberately inflammatory and disrespectful.

We tried ANZ, remember what happened there?

A little harsh? It is a troll post and should be deleted as should anyone else who tries to hijack a thread like this. We're talking Lidcombe Oval and this bozo wants to take pot shots at Leichhardt? I'm replying to your post because his doesn't warrant one.

The FIBROS back at their former home Western Suburbs Magpies are flying back to their long-time base at Lidcombe Oval for the opening round of the VB NSW Cup.

With the Magpies Nest at Campbelltown Sports Stadium not available for the clubʼs season opener, theyʼll be lining up to face arch rivals the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles at the scene of so many of the infamous battles between the Fibros and the Silvertails

On Saturday 3rd March 2012, the Magpies will be calling their former base ʻHomeʼ once again in what promises to be a trip down memory lane for many Wests fans and Rugby League supporters in general.

The Magpies flew west from Lidcombe to Leumeah a quarter of a century ago and have not graced the hallowed turf of Lidcombe since 1986.

This nostalgic return to Lidcombe promises to be treasured and remembered for a long time to come.

Itʼs a rare opportunity for the Magpies and their supporters to relive memories of yesteryear when the famous black and whites became entrenched in Rugby League folklore as the ʻFibrosʼ representing the broad community that is the Western Suburbs of Sydney.

What a fantastic website Galahs - i never knew it existed - brings back fond memories of the many hours i spent on the hill at lidcombe and occasionally on the bike track when the crowd spilled over
