Richards a liability

So now it's the 'get rid of Richards' thread.
Is there anybody left we don't want to get rid of for one reason or another?

Richards has height and can catch, tackle, move laterally, and most importantly kick. However, he has lost most of his pace.

Lawrence can't do any of these but is apparently a nice guy and claims to be fit. Lawrence today managed a missed tackle on a player already lying on the ground! By the time he turned and chased the rest of his team were already back in Sydney.

The fact remains that he possesses nothing that can't be taught. He has a big boot, sure, but for all the ranting and raving his drop outs last year were below average.
From memory Moses had a decent record in NYC, and Taylor is a widely respected kicking coach, so even if Pat moves to NSW Cup or even retires early and takes on a specialist coaching role I think we will be better off.

For his size he is underwhelming one on one and his finishing is questionable, it's mainly his high ball defence keeping him in for me.
We seem to be so happy to shed experience for youth in other positions yet Richards (and Lawrence) retain their spots with very little remaining merit.

It's time to fully commit to the rebuild, GC Suns style, and build for a competitive team in a few years time.

1\. Tedesco
2\. Nofoaluma
3\. Heleta
4\. Naiqama
5\. Simona
6\. Moses
7\. Brooks
8\. Woods
9\. Farah
10\. Taupau
11\. Sironen
12\. Akauola
13\. Santi
14\. Seumanufagai
15\. Lodge (playing lock)
16\. Sue/Buchanan
17\. Funaki/Cherrington

Remember Richards goal kicking won us games last season

Moses has to be within 3-5% in goal kicking percentage for it to be worthwhile to drop Richards

Please!!!!

He deserves a few rounds of real football to prove his worth. I remember he was being talked up for SOO last year.

Given his age I doubt Pat would be fully wound up yet.

There's still a few weeks of preseason left, then the trials….

I will wait until there over and see how things progress before casting anyone off....

It's not just Richards goal kicking that gives us an advantage, his kick offs are a huge bonus too.

I must be the only one, or one of only a few, that didn't think Richards was that bad in the 9s (in what little game time he had).

Hopefully when he retires he has taught someone else to replicate his kick offs for us.

He's not long term obvs.
Kev>Richards.

Some one needs to be practicing goal kicking to take Patty's place.

Disagree.
He can't be considered a liability as long as his boot is scoring points and setting the team up to score others. Technically he is excellent with the boot. His kickoffs give WT a massive edge and no-one else in the comp can replicate them. When his boot starts to fail it will be time to retire, but for now Richards = points.

If Richards is a liability then can someone please explain what Lawrence is?

had a couple shockers last year, but i don't recall him blowing any big scoring plays, defense was ok,and i don't really hammer a winger in defense when the inside structure is awful.
his boot helps win games and pace isn't everything.

unless you can quantify how many points he cost us last year it's just hot air to me.

The thing is, with Pat, we have an advantage over every other side in the comp; kickoffs. His detractors try to play down how important that is, but its a hell of an advantage over everyone else when you have a 50/50 shot of regaining the kick off every time.

Agree with Bon, there weren't too many, if any instances last yr where he cost us games, he's not Lote circa 2012-13\. If anything he made massive contributions to games we won. The Parra game on Easter Monday, and against the Raiders at Cambo, made a couple of real clutch plays in the dying moments that helped us get over the line.

And again, Nines form. Its like saying a cricketer should be dumped from the test side cos he couldn't score a run in a 20/20 game.

Pretty much summed it all up for me.

When he's slotting them 90% of the time and his kick offs give us a chance of winning the ball back. He still has a lot to offer.

He was much better than Lawrence was in the 9's. Captain Anonymous.

The problem, as has been stated, is you can't have both Lawrence and Richards on the same side. They are both slow, so if one makes a mistake in defence neither can catch up and rectify the mistake. In attack even if one makes a half break there's no-one with pace to help finish it off.

Richards and Simona, and Lawrence and Nofo/Naiqama should be how we start the first month.

Potentially once Nofo returns we shift Naiqama to centre and nofo back to the wing.

The players have been pretty well covered but we can always start on the coach (lol).

Richards should be kicking coach and teach his ways to whoever is next in line…
Moses?

Richards is not the issue.

The big problem for us last year is that we lost our fullback who could not be replaced.

We had alot of young players in the forwards who were asked to do more than they were ready for due to injuries and lack of depth, they mentally switched off at times.

We had loads of inexperience in the halves and at times they made rookie errors, normally trying too much.

Richards, Galloway and Lawrence who have becomes pariahs were nowhere near as bad as the forum is making out.

A year of footy, another offseason will see alot more consistent performance out of our very talented youngsters

One thing is for sure, if Tedesco goes down again, i'm sure JT won't make the same mistake Potter did by shifting him to fb like he did against the Warriors last yr. Now, he did show in that game that he was too slow for that position.

But from a wingers perspective, pace isn't everything. Look guys like Covell, El Masri, even Darryl Halligan. Its better to be slow and have all other facets of the game covered than to be quick and be utterly hopeless everywhere else.
