Robert Lui charged with assaulting girlfriend

I know it is premature and everyone is entitled to presumption of innocence but the club needs to make a stand
It is dark cloud hanging over the team and club

None of us here are in any position to suggest what the club or should not do in regards to off field matters such as this.

I agree. Many people I think are jumping the gun just a bit. Wait for a result and see what happens then. Everyone should respect the most basic of rights, innocent until proven guilty.
Just sit tight and let things play out.

Robert Lui's odds of staying at Wests Tigers lengthening as Tim Moltzen indicates he wants to stay

ROBERT Lui and Tim Moltzen are both fighting to stay at the Wests Tigers but for very different reasons.
>
Tigers insiders have already arrived at the belief that Lui needs to start afresh. And that belief has neatly coincided with Moltzen's backflip.
>
Lui faces court tomorrow to answer assault charges over an alleged incident with his partner Taleah Rae Backo on September 19.
>
Police claim Backo suffered swelling to her face.
>
The relationship and circumstances are clearly complex.
>
But that's unlikely to stop Wests Tigers from parting ways with their halfback, especially after yesterday's news Moltzen is desperate to stay at Concord next year.
>
Well aware of Lui's talent and potential, senior Tigers types did their upmost to support him during a turbulent off-season last year.
>
Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar.
>
End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.
>
Skipper Robbie Farah even accommodated Lui at his home last year and again a fortnight ago when Lui was charged with assault.
>
It's understood Moltzen informed coach Tim Sheens of his desire to renege on a three-year deal with St George Illawarra before Lui's latest woes.
>
The fact Wests are now preparing to go to contractual war against the Dragons is further evidence that Lui will be elsewhere in 2012.
>
Losing both would decimate the team's spine.
>
Without his top half and fullback, Sheens would be heavily reliant on youngsters to fill two vital positions. Meanwhile, Benji Marshall and Farah would become ridiculously blatant targets for opposition defences.
>
If Lui goes and Moltzen stays, as expected, a fascinating off-season recruitment puzzle will be triggered.
>
And the central piece is Roosters discard Todd Carney. Because the clubs that are showing interest in Carney will also be the same ones with an eye on Lui's future: Cronulla, Souths, North Queensland, Gold Coast and Newcastle.
>
It's no secret Cronulla have spoken to Carney, but the latest mail sugests he won't be wearing the black, white and blue next year.
>
The Titans are believed to have made an extremely modest offer that's very unlikely to be accpeted. Souths have repeatedly denied any interest in Carney, but that's not what his closest allies in Sydney tell us.
>
Carney has told friends he's open to becoming a Rabbitoh. Yet at the same time he's also concerned about the Redfern club's reputation for strict behavioural rules that might lead to more broken promises.
>
At the very least, Carney is now mature enough to realise this has been his downfall - not drinking per se.
>
To win out he needs a strong mentor and there's none better than Wayne Bennett at Newcastle, which could squeeze Carney into their 2012 squad on match payments and then back-load for future seasons.
>
Eternally hunting for a half to ride alonsgide Johnathan Thurston, the Cowboys are now embarrassed for options. Lui is from Townsville and Carney also has a number of close friends in Noth Queensland from his 2009 exile in Atherton.

Lui ordered to stay away from girlfriend
October 7, 2011 - 12:47PM

Wests Tigers footballer Robert Lui has been ordered not to see his girlfriend after being accused of assaulting her.

The 21-year-old NRL halfback was backed by his club during a brief appearance in Burwood Local Court on Friday.

He was accompanied by about five supporters, including Wests Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys.

Lui was stood down by the NRL club last month following his arrest at his home in Sydney's west after the team's "Mad Monday" celebrations, following its semi-final defeat by the Warriors.

Police detained the footballer after being called to the North Strathfield premises and finding his partner, Taleah Rae Backo, with a swollen face.

Lui was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and granted bail.

Mr Humphreys said the club has offered the pair counselling, which both had agreed to, although Ms Backo is currently living interstate.

He said the AVO prevented contact between Lui and Ms Backo without prior agreement through legal representatives.

A child was added to the order during the hearing.

Mr Humphreys said outside court it wasn't "an ideal situation" for the club.

"But these things happen," he said outside.

"The matter is in court now and we will let that flow through and make a determination when all the facts are there.

"From a Wests Tigers point of view we will continue to monitor the league situation and make a comment when it is appropriate."

The matter will return to the same court on October 27.

Court documents tendered suggest that Lui knocked his girlfriend to the ground, pulled out her hair and kicked her in the head a couple of times. He then threw her out the front door.

Lui stated that he had consumed a number of cases of vodka cruises' over the previous couple of days.

I am not making a judgement one way or the other. Just pointing out what is now on the public record.

Yes that's all fine, but if u want to suddenly raise the righteous bar of morality, why allow the subject to kick start in this forum at all? It's just absurd to let the thing run for weeks and then proclaim 'none of us are in a position etc…...'

You'd be better served having a moratorium on the matter until there's a resolution in the local/district court, rather than getting all paternal about someone's comments

There's nothing wrong with threads such as this as long as they abide within forum rules. My comment which you have quoted merely reflects my own personal view of the matter, and that is essentially that the club knows best and it's not for me, or anyone else to decide how they should deal with the matter. People can choose to disagree if they wish, but the club has already stood Lui down from training with the main squad as well as non-attendance of formal events so it's not like they are sitting on their haunches.

If that's true, I honestly wouldn't want to see him playing for the Tigers again.

I think we might have to prepare to see Moltz at HB and Brown at FB next season.

Not looking too good for Lui at the moment…

If what has been reported is true, he should never be allowed to play for any NRL club. I actually think he will face jail time if proven guilty

Surely he has to go. If this is true I will not attend another Tigers game while he is still on our roster. Absolutely disgusting.

I agree

Now that this is on record I feel comfortable saying I won't pay a cent towards the club while he is on the books, nor attend a game. Even if he is found not guilty the same "allegations" two years running show me he is trouble. Its not like he ever denied the previous assault, he got off on "mitigating circumstances".

Anyone (out of us fans) concerned with the football side of things given these events should also approach Wests Tigers for counselling. Football is a game, domestic abuse is not. There are some people who make excuses and bold claims about "circumstances" around these events. The context is irrelevant, absolutely and unequivocally. Fire him.

too right, i couldnt believe it when i read it….disgusting if u ask me.

Just remember everyone that at this stage the police have made accusations against him - he has not been proven guilty.

So we need to be careful and let due process take place.

If this is what happened, it is truly unforgivable! I feel sick!
