By Wayne Cousins
Sunday, 21 March 2010
The Roosters opened the scoring in the first minute when full-back Highie Stanley split the defence to score under the posts. Half-back Brad Murray converted for a 6-0 lead.
It became 10-0 when Stanley crossed for his second try after simply brushing off second-rower Junior Roqica to score out wide. It was a poor attempted tackle by Roqica who just dropped his head in shame. Murray converted for a 12-0 lead.
The opening 15 minutes have seen the Roosters dominate possession. Wests Tigers have not helped their own cause through too much drop ball early and some poor reads in defence.
Wests Tigers opened their account through centre Limonia Kamuta after a Roosters defender spilt a short chip kick from full-back Jake Mullaney. Mullaney failed to convert the try from the sideline for a 12-4 scoreline.
Wests Tigers prop Neil Begovich then knocked on in-goal from the re-start. Fortunately for the team, half-back Jay Florimo found touch from the drop out to give Wests Tigers the scrum feed after 25 minutes.
Some nice play by Florimo and five-eighth Bodie Clark saw Clark give an inside pass to forward Vahu Pulu to push off a defender to score in a 10 metre run to the line. Mullaney converted the try for a 12-10 scoreline after 31 minutes.
The score remained that way until half-time.
2nd Half
Wests Tigers got a repeat set of six in the 43rd minute after a grubber kick by Clark was forced dead by Stanley. A penalty was then awarded 10 metres out with Wests Tigers electing to keep the pressure on. It paid off when a grubber kick by Florimo on the last saw the ball sit up perfectly in goal for second-rower Joel Wisbey to score next to the posts.
Mullaney converted the try for a 16-12 lead after 46 minutes.
The lead was short lived when Sam Brunton crashed over in a two man tackle two minutes later to score next to the posts. Murray converted the try to give the Roosters an 18-16 lead after 49 minutes.
The Roosters extended their lead to 22-16 three minutes later when centre Ryan Williamson crashed over out wide. Murray converted from out wide for a 24-16 scoreline.]
Wests Tigers hit back through a try to winger Sama Sauvao off a grubber kick from Mullaney. The try was not converted for a 24-20 scoreline after 74 minutes.
The Roosters converted a penalty goal from 25 metres out in the 77th minute for a 26-20 lead after receiving a penalty following a late shoulder charge hit by Florimo on a Roosters kicker.
