Round 1 Thoughts

I don’t understand why every other team that’s had bad runs in the past (Knights, Eels, Panthers) can just revamp their team and become some of the better teams in the comp, yet we go through player after player, combination after combination and it always turns to crap.

I’m sick of signing average players and pretending like they’ll turn us into a premiership threat when 1 in every 5 of them pans out.

Knights got Klemmer, Frizel, Ponga, Pearce and they become a strong team. We sign a bunch of “young guns” that don’t pan out or leave and mid tier players who do the same.

Same story every year

TPAs...and our club was run on 10c, and poorly at that, for about 19 years. I'm surprised we survived. It's turning around, but that's a big deficit hence why it's taking time and other clubs get the players we don't at this stage.

- Garner ruined our chances early in the 2nd half with the dumb Wighton penalty and missed tackles leading to tries
- Leilua boys need to not offload in our own 40
- Talau in for Kepaoa
- Lack of leadership/ urgency in the spine was hard to watch when we were attacking

Positives:

- Laurie was great
- Our forwards held their own against what most think is the best forward pack in the comp
- our defense on the line
- JTJ started to look for the ball
- brooks goal kicking

Negatives :

- no one took control and led the team around the park
- we had no attack
- garner & packer
- our backs looked disorganized all game they had no idea what was going on, at one point Twal was playing the position of halfback.....

That’s what you get when recruitment managers just sign to take pressure off and cover their arse, BJ, kepaoa even James Roberts probably are blokes who don’t show the values you want in players. Just short term big names to deflect attention and hope for quick fix. We just keep wasting money.

I’m reserving judgement on the halves until AD gets there . That guy who has trained in the halves all offseason .

Problem is , they don't play the young guns, and this forum wants to protect the young creatures, give me a break and give them a go!

Agree with all except I think Kepaoa will come good,Talau should come in for Joey

Easy mate they don't have a dud coach

I feel scammed.

The club had me hook, line & sinker this off-season.

That is a crazy big and talented Raiders team. We aren't in their class.

But we weren't that bad. We won't play teams that huge every week and we won't be as fatigued as a result.

I take a lot of heart in the recruitment. Our best and brightest today were all recruited on Maguire's watch.

NO , Simkin was Madge, the rest were Hartigan. The plodders were Madge.

It’s amazing how some can write the side off after a first round loss to Canberra in Canberra. Five club debutants. 6-6 at half time, showing plenty of resilience. Yes we capitulate in the second half but come on, some of you guys need to give yourselves a good old fashioned uppercut.

This is the only defence Brooks has Atm not a huge defence but lets wait an see !

We played a good side today, but never put any pressure on them.

Based on today, we don't seem to have improved on last year, but the next month will be the real test.

What'everyones thoughts on talaus game today ?

He looked sharp and fast. Seems a little leaner. Looking forward to seeing his progression.

The letdown's for me were:

Garner's defence...that hurt us in a big way.
Brooks general kicking game;
Brooks/Mbye lack of ability to steer the team around the park;
The forwards, despite the extra size never really got on the front foot as a committed Raiders defence nullified them;
Joey Leilua is not FG standard despite losing 10kg;

The positives:

Our attack should only improve;
The defensive errors are fixable.

I agree mate ay, how do u think he would go in the second row? Surely cant be much worse then garner did today and he surely is big enough

Nope, he looked leaner and faster. He has trained on wing/centre all pre-season and would be unfair to throw him in the forwards where it's about strength and wrestle.

Garner had a few good moments in the first 30 but can't do it for anywhere close to 80.

As i said before the game, our best attacking players were not picked. Our forwards were good ,and Laurie as well, but to leave out Simkin, and Madden was stupid. The players let it be known who they preferred but Madge has a love affair with Mbye. Joey L straight into CC should be classed as permanent HIA.
