Our defenders out wide need to learn to use the sideline as another defender.
I think this is the wrong approach against Newcastle. They have speed, strength and skill on their left edge and we have players not noted for their defence. If we are to win this game it is off the back of our forwards and an up and in defence to put pressure on Sharpe, Best and Ponga. If we let them come to us and slide with them the time and space will allow them to work our edges over.

It is our cover/scramble defence that should need to use the sideline as our defenders out wide should be jamming hard on Bird and Ponga while concurrently inside presure is being applied to the first/second receiver.

This game is winnable even with AD/Faataape in the centres - but we will need to be really focussed on winning the middle on both sides of the pill and attacking with our defence.

This is... Interesting.

Ponga vs Mason
Faataape + Skelton vs Best + Marzhew

Staines, Latu benched... Tristan Hope elevated, hey I am up for merit based promotions.

We only have one edge on the Knights and that is in our halves. Luai+Galvin had better put on a good show in both attack and organising our defense. Cogger+Sharpe have been batting way above their pay grade, lets see what Galvin does when he is the NRL 5/8 with more experience on the field.

Back 5 this week are up there for "worst" in the comp.

We obviously have a lot of injuries and Mason, Fa'atape, Douehi and Skelton have a lot to prove.

On paper, with 4 centres (Olam, Laulili, Naden, Toa) and first choice fullback and hooker out (Bula and Api) we really shouldn't win this.

Expectation is we should have enough desire and strength in the forward pack to make it competitive. If we get blown out I'll be very disappointed.

But if we do get the win it will be a huge confidence booster for the side and show how far we are really come since last year.

Think this will really show us how much the inclusions of May and Luai have added to the team. I think we will be more than competitive, with some decent cattle still to return.

That’s the defensive strategies as much as the players themselves . I thought they clearly showed a sliding defence in the trials I saw , especially midfield. Allowing these stepping block plays to run their course , and end with the ball carrier being tackled just in from touch . Which actually if you play it right now ruins 3 plays . As the the play itself , the following play to reset back centre field , and the 3rd play now is , depending on where the 2nd tackle ended , now can be in no man’s land centre field . With numbers set in defence .
If we do it right , no issues . We need our centres to trust the process , we need our edge forwards to take off early , and we need our halves to communicate to the edge that everyone is where they’re supposed to be .
None of that has been happening prior to this year . I did see a lot of evidence of that in the trial though . So we will see . Faatape seems to understand the system , but is poor in his one on one defending . Same for AD .
