LIVE GAME Round 4 vs Warriors

Live Game Discussion
Madden had a decent game, Doueihi had a massive bounceback game.

Luai is #6 if he is fit.

I don't think you can crown Madden the #7 after one decent performance. And the middle forwards match up too well to start moving them around.

The only place you shift Doueihi at this point is to centre. But I'm of the belief you just don't shift him at all. Let him play #7. Madden is a solid depth piece that finally makes us feel less horrified if someone has the sniffles.
Sanity has been restored……However we have a month of Jock and we’ll know a lot more by then.

I have the same feeling champion @Yossarian - this young team are just touching the sides as to what they can do.
Agree, and I think it will be built on the bond they all seem to have.
I loved when Terrell ran in to stick up for young Mak when he was manhandled by Fisher- Harris.
It's that sense of team that's keeping them turning up when things aren't going their way. It's also what allows them to be honest with each other without fearing repercussions that you get when a fellow player is just a work acquaintance.

Let's hope the Luai question is answered in the next few weeks.
Madden 7----Doueihi 6. They now have a 3 games opportunity to form a great combo.
And Latu to make it more complicated.
At the moment Luai is behind the 8 ball IMO.
Let's not forget Luai let Souths in for a try last week. His defence is not perfect either.
Nope, no chance. Id be more interested to see how Luai goes with Madden at 7 giving him the same room that he gave to AD.

I agree with with what you say. My only retort is it hasn't been one decent performance. I know they are only trials, but the team has looked better in attack every time jock has played so far. Obviously his defence is a concern.

I agree it was great to see Terrell fire up and be extremely aggressive in defence of his young team mate.
His stats were way down on what they normally are last night, but I thought his ball carries and impact was very good.
Similar with Samuela Fainu, his stats were not much to look at, but I though he looked ready to run through brick walls.
We have quite a few forwards that have done their NRL learning over the past few years and are now coming into their prime.
The best part is we have a ready to go Bunty Afoa and Charlie Murray, a much improved Tony Sukkar and going off last nights game a ready to go Mavrik Geyer all ready to go at NRL level when required.

They did work great. The middle was a wall. But Twal led the tackle count and still managed to do over 120m in attack.
He played most of the game …. What are you talking about ? There’s only maybe 2-3 runs available for a forward every set of 6 . And coming out of yardage , probably 1-2.
And if you’re constantly coming out of yardage … which we were then options are limited . Stop googling stats… they don’t tell half the story

People like you and Tucker are hard to please.

Case in point. Renowned forum knobs. Wouldn’t be happy if we won the comp.

Thanks SuperCoach!
It’s hard though . His defence has never been good . He’s a tiny body , so teams try and isolate him 1v1 with big , strong , fast , backrowers , like we let happen the first 19 minutes . Like I said it was because his winger and centre were really passive on the line, and madden has learnt to shoot op and limit time and space . It seemed like a lack of communication , a once the adjustment was made to Masi … because he was the problem IMO … then it got sorted .
Moral of the story is the guys inside and outside him have to work hard , because he is a small body and will get targeted . I think that’s just a fact. But hey luai got run over by a leprechaun last week … and AD used to think he was a conquistador with his red flag a few years ago … so I dunno.

The difference between last nights game and last weeks game was structure. In both games the forwards played well and won the middle. In both games we had defensive issues out wide.
The difference to me was the shape and way everyone was running onto the ball..with that the points flowed.

What they said:

NRL Head Coach, Benji Marshall

“It was probably the most resilient performance I've seen from us in a long time.

“I was very proud of the team, just to show the resilience to fight back. I think the Warriors were 17 from 18 at one stage, giving us nothing at all. I thought our left edge, after they got dusted a little bit early, made some adjustments on the run to fight back and do a fair job, which is hard, especially having two 19-year-olds out there that are still learning the positions.

“I was just really happy we played the type of footy that we've been talking about wanting to play.”

On Jock Madden:

“He's been on the bench for two games with us, biding his time, and had a great preseason.

“I thought he was the difference tonight. He put Adam in position so he could just run. He did all the kicking, took all the pressure off Adam and let him just play.

“His grandfather passed away last week, and he didn't make the funeral because he wanted to play for the team, and he said his grandfather would want him to play. So we're really proud of him for that, and his grandfather would have been really proud of him.

Captain, Api Koroisau

When asked about coming back from a 10-point deficit in the first half:

“Honestly, I don't think it has anything to do with the Warriors putting on points, but just how we just stopped them rolling. We've had issues with that in the past, and we've let a lot of teams get a lot of points on us. And yeah, just the chat out there. You know, the other leaders were really up, and I think even the rookies did a really great job of doing their job. So, it was a great team effort.”

When talking about Tino Tavana’s debut:

“He’s just one of those special kids, super talented, and obviously needed to do a bit of work in the preseason. But he proved it to us over those three months and really came out and didn't leave anything on the field tonight. It was great to see him take that opportunity.

The difference to me was the shape and way everyone was running onto the ball..with that the points flowed.
They Also

Stretched / Attacked the Wahs from inside our own half.

Tons of support and

Played to the last minute (We scored a try at the end of both halves)

Our forwards won this game for us. I don't think I've seen better first contact technique across 80 minutes from a WT side. Well maybe 70 minutes lol. Tackling was superb, and you can see the side is also in excellent physical condition, because we really grew into that match as it went on.

Bench rotation has changed 2 games for us in a row now. Benji and the coaching team deserve credit for finally getting a tune out of Royce Hunt. (its like a new signing) Alex Twal is also going beyond being 'the new Skando.' He was superb.

Jock Madden did a great job, but he's gotta do more to enter the conversation as a starting half. He did his job, solid kicking game but not superior to AD. AD tho, goodness me what a natural footy player he is. I think the decision to drop Skelton was the right one too.
Commentators on fox/kayo were raving on about the tigers first contact in defence.... Saying how good it was...

The shape wasn’t there until Latu came on in the 55th minute . There’s a reason this kid is quietly considered to still be one of the true blue chip prospects . His body just has let him down . I’ve always said Latu is Katoa level … maybe even better . Many people raved about Latu through the juniors … Katoa was a great half but not “generational” which was the language people used about Latu. And Galvin ? ….. he will be a lock come 2030. Probably sooner . We just have to maintain patience .

Surely the answer when Luia comes back, with 1 or 2 starting Centres out, is Doueihi to Centre. His two game defining breaks were Centre type plays. I know previously Doueihi at Centre wasn't ideal, but he and the team are playing at a new level, and as first drop Centre it's a great replacement.

That should be the end of any criticism of the coach for a while.

It’s on the playing group to bring that level of performance each week now.

I'd hate to be in the trenches with anyone who posted in the first 6 pages of this thread.
Do you all give up that easily in day to day life?

People had us getting flogged, we'll lose by 40, it's gonna be a long night, the Benji experiment has failed (that was my favourite).

Then there's the people who gave up during the week because apparently we couldn't match the Warriors in any department and our forwards would be steamrollered.

What a negative collective of sad sacks.
I wasn’t in that collective but not really cool with criticism of any Tigers fan who has endured 15 years without any real success.

I can certainly understand the fears but feel like this side has a chance to bring some better times.

Valid points mtd.
In response, I don’t see why playing in the prop rotation should affect Twal’s current game too much. He can still run hard, offload and defend in the middle. AD should add more to the 13 in a ball player role. IMO Pole has better impact off the bench than when starting.
I am trying to squeeze Madden, Latu, AD and Luai into the 17 and can see them all playing minutes at some point in a game. Api playing less minutes providing time and space for them too.
Ok I watched the game twice and I can’t believe everyone has madden in the team every week , yes he my have directed the team around, but he costed us two tries , his defence on the line is poor , maybe be better coming on in a short effort, but for me he is not a full time starter

Api’s comments the most telling there, this side matches up physically like we haven’t in the past.
