Richard Norman Thornett, better known as Dick, is one of only five athletes to have represented Australia in three different sports.
As a 20-year-old Dick Thornett was selected to play water polo for Australia at the 1960 Rome Olympics and during his two senior seasons for Randwick rugby club, he made eleven appearances for the Wallabies.

In 1963, Thornett switched to rugby league to play for the Parramatta Eels and was picked to play for the Kangaroos becoming the 28th Australian dual code international.

Thornett made twelve appearances for the Kangaroos, including the 1968 World Cup and he remains the only athlete to represent Australia at the sports of water polo, rugby union and rugby league
