Russian invasion of Ukraine

The west couldn't win a war in Afghanistan for 20 odd years against 'cavemen', backward savages with sandels and old Kalashnikovs (which they supplied). Give us a break already..

Russia is considering selling its oil and gas for bitcoin as sanctions intensify

Interesting article.

Could be a good excuse for the U.S. to stamp out Cryptocurrencies.

But also note the reference to how countries are getting away from U.S. dollar trade. This will fatally weaken the U.S. financially and is a big reason why we are heading to economic blocks where the U.S. forces all allies to trade with dollars in a downsized way. If globalization continues but the U.S. dollar is not the reserve currency that is existential for America financially.

Current events are convenient.

My condolences 💐

Sub class 600 visas can be extended for Ukrainians . Close relatives can apply on behalf of family too.

Just a side note too my mum used to work for Qantas and I checked the avails of intmational flights and all of the flights were empty 150+ vacant seats. I’m not sure if dfat is organising chartered flights
I am going to bend my self imposed rules on this one and all for helping people escape the theatre of war or persecution. So am happy to see our nation helping those fleeing Ukraine in some way.

Maybe to go a bit with @Kaito on this one though, I cannot stand the hypocrisy of both our government and those that have repeatedly voted for them, to keep genuine refugees from similar conflicts, some in which we were directly involved, in long term detention. For up to 9 BLOODY YEARS because they couldn’t get a tourist or other visa and fly direct into our capital cities.

Every time that I see our NSW senator Jim Molan I am disgusted when reminded of his commanding role in helping create Daesh that eventually morphed into ISIS. Now in the shadow of an election they finally decide it is time to utilise the offer from our neighbour that has been on the table for years. A deal that would have saved many hundreds of traumatised individuals years of further pain and abuse.

I deplore military uniforms being used for political purposes and especially so when officers are seconded to perform civil duties. Whilst at it, they should not be regularly appointed the position of Governer General either, nor should that relic from empire exist in the first place.

Sorry, rant over.

The only invader to win a war in what is now called Afghanistan was Alexander the Great and even he left the area after travelling into part of India. All the others including Britain Russia and the USA lost

For a bit of levity and in keeping some relationship to that Russian invasion, along with similarities of the now in nations forming alliances with the enemies of their potential enemies to provide munitions and the logistics of such. The Tom Hanks movie Charlie Wilson's War that mixes a bit of dark comedy, creative license and actual footage, along with the political machinations involved is a half decent watch.

I enjoyed the plot, but being my normal honest self, the main memory or attraction of the movie was not that, rather the appearance of the natural young Emily Blunt as a major donor's daughter and particularly the later drunk and stoned scantily clad version.

That would be me. My anger goes back a long way on this, to two weeks prior to the 9/11 incidents on August 26th 2001. Quite ironic that we as a nation then had our troops deployed in an 'unruly' Afghanistan for two decades.

On that day it was decided by the government of the day to defy international maritime laws and play political football with a pitiful boatload of mainly Hazaras escaping the same regime we soon set out to remove.

Contrasting that iteration of government with the humanitarian one of its sister coalition predecessor some two decades earlier and then comparing it to the even more disgusting current one, and particularly the leader, is chalk and cheese.

For anyone wanting to bring up deaths at sea or other similar stuff, please remember that many hundreds also died after the Malaysian agreement was boycotted for political gain at the cost of those innocent lives. For fiscal conservatives, we ended up placing refugees on third world islands at the cost of billions upon billions of additional dollars as a result.

To see the UK following a similar path is disturbing.
