RYAN CROSS

I'm not a fan of buying union players. Even if they have played League before they lose their defensive technique and more so their ability to read the game after a stint in the rah rah. If we can get em cheap i suppose they are worth the risk.
There is a kid running around in grade rugby currently i know the ARU are desperate to keep but its looking like he might get snapped up by the Roosters. Dan Gardiner. I saw him score an individual try one game with a magic dummy to the touch judge. Hilarious. He is a forward so he won't come up on our radar.

Ed Ryan Cross is a Leaguie who switched to Union Guess you weren't happy we bought Lote either ?? Not a big fan of Cross Defensively not fantastic and as someone said previously almost 32 Pass . We need a fullback more than anything else

Cross actually played all his juniors with union happy, went to waverly or one of those private schools. Didnt play league until he was 18 or so I believe.

Yeah Fergie realized that but he played his senior footy as a league player was the point I was making So he doesn't carry the baggage as say a Stirling Mortlock would as he hasn't played the game (league) as a senior

Ryan Cross was a Easts Junior playing for St Charles in the Souths comp but also played Union on Saturdays.
Went to Waverly College (correct Fergie) and then repped Aust Rugby Union School boys from there (also correct Gary). Went straight to the Roosters from school and scored a try on debut if I remember correctly. Stayed a few seasons then went to the Force (WA) to play Union then Waratahs recently.

His old man played with Easts then Balmain. Good connection with the Club and a distinct possibility!!

My thoughts exactly- Ayshford would be wasted at lock. Better off playing Schirnack. Or Ellis as it may be.

Lawrence to fullback would accomodate a Ryan Cross well, while giving the tigers that dynamic fullback we require…

No - Ryan C
Yes - Dan G

I can see the Rorters making a play for DG as payback for us going after Ryan Cross (Ryan Cross had a gentlemens agreement that if he was to return to league it would be the Rorters).

From all reports, Gardiners ego could be an issue though but well worth the risk in my opinion

If hes signed on the absolute cheap (as the OP suggests) then theres nothing to lose.

In terms of value, Matt Utai is close to our best value player in terms of what we pay him to what he gives out. If Cross is on this sort of money then there is nothing to lose. If we were talking reasonable money id say no thanks.

In terms to options there are plenty. Cross to centre, Ayshford to lock. Cross to fullback (Although id really rather speed in that position) or also Cross to centre, lawrence to fullback (Lawrence did play his best footy in my opinion 4 years ago when he charged back off kick returns and broke the first tackle 9 times out of 10).

All in all not bothered about the signing, but it couldnt hurt. Would rather Vidot as well

I have heard similar rumblings and I am pretty sure he missed the Australian Schoolboys team two years back for disciplinary reasons.

Regardless, he would be a great signing with excellent versatility. He would command a spot in our 17 next season, probably from the bench.

The only Dan i would sign from Rugby would be Dan C as in Carter And we all know that won't happen . We have some brilliant juniors coming through in most positions Lets just hang in and drip feed them slowly into the top side

This is a gee up right?

Cross was not that great years ago. So you want to sign a 32 year old has been. Even Sheens would not be game to do this.

Fullbacks? we have plenty. Lawrence, Mullaney and the young bloke (Tedesco) from the under 20's. All of these players are in their early 20's and in Tedesco's case, in his teens.

Then there are those who think that we will have Duggan as well.

So we do not need fullbacks or forwards. We need outside backs with plenty of speed.

How about:-

Fullback: Duggan/Tedesco/Mullaney/Lawrence

Centre: Lawrence/Vidot/Ayshford

Wings: A couple of Fifians come to mind

5/8: Benji

1/2: Miller

Forwards: Groat, Big Red, Ellis, Farah, Begovitch, BMM, Ayshford, Blair, Akepira, Moors, Schirnack, Woods.

You could get a fairly competitive team out of that lot.

Dugan has signed with the Tigers…..well that was a good thing to post about last week. Ryan Cross has been offered a contract with the Tigers so we'll forget about the Tigers signing Dugan, we'll throw that topic out the window, it's done and dusted and we'll move onto Ryan Cross now for the rest of this week. Lawrence to fullback, yaddih yaddah......another typical day at http://www.weststigersforum.com

Sometimes these rumours just does my head in.

I believe Ryan was a ballboy for the Tigers when he as younger. He's always wanted to play for the Tigers and would be a good person to have around the team. Not sure if he's still first grade material, but if he's gonna sign for us on minimum wages and bust his gut to do all he can, then why not throw him a bone? At worst he can become a back office member - maybe a liasion officer for schools in the balmain area or something like that.

Hi Mods, could we get the Dan Gardiner discussion moved to another thread please? Multiple topics in one thread is not good for my sanity. Thanks

Start a new thread about Dan Gardiner if you like.

Is he related to the (Peter?) Cross who played for the Bamain Tigers - on the wing (I think) in the late 60's early 70's. Had red curly hair (I think) and my dad used to call out "Where's your handbag Crossy?"

I've probably posted this saying before Chris but just in case I haven't . "A rumour circles the earth before the truth has a chance to put its shoes on " Lindy Chamberlain .
So Maybe the reason the Blair issue is taking so long is because it is the truth and the truth sometimes takes a while . Some of the other stories ,rumours etc well ….. Lets see if they put their shoes on as well !!!

His old man is Paul Cross

whether we want him depends on price i guess.

I heard earlier someone saying that the Rugby Boys cant tackle, massive myth. There is more missed tackles in rugby due the wider defensive channels and due to a different defensive alignment caused by the extra kicking, results in alot more decisons having to be made in defence. As a league player going to union, it takes a bout 1 game to work out while more tackles are missed.

I reckon that in many ways the blokes that have come back from rugby have come back better players (despite their age) not worse.

The rugby player I d love to see in tiger colours is Quade Cooper, anyone see how much he carved up sat night.

Maybe I could add him to my Cooper Cronk/Billy slater package deal ive been hoping for
