Was brilliant , ( has insane hands ) hopefully he doesn't go backwards with us….future Blues .

Pleasing signs. Rowdy and Matterson with Garner waiting in the wings.

Another decent three quarter line player and a hard nosed prop and we're looking good I reckon.

The centre we signed had a solid game in the prelim, replacing Mitchell.

The Roosters regard him as a bigger loss than Matterson. He'll be given first crack at left centre for us.

That sounds promising

So i guess they actually tried to keep him but with manu n Mitchell ahead of him he was no hope of playing NRL

Yes and no, we haven't signed him on big dollars, but he was also contracted to the chooks for next season. They saw he has a genuine opportunity to play FG at the Tigers and they didn't want to stand in his way of playing regular FG basically so let him go early. Make no mistake though, he's quite highly regarded at the chooks and he and Matterson will fit our culture well.

Roosters have run out of brown paper bags for 2019 signings.

I wish that were true Newtown, but I don't think they will ever run out out of them. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they make a play for Munster in the off season, as I think Cronk may now retire.

Uncle nick is expected to leave over 500 million in investments to the roosters when he retires from the board.

Half a billion? I don't think so.

Glad we have a nickname for him. I’ll be stuffed if I’m going to keep trying to remember how to spell that name for the next 2 years.

Momirovski..

Thoughts on playing Matterson at lock? Big body, great defender, can ball play.

Assuming Garner or even McQueen could come good at second row.

Not a bad idea, worth consideration I would say.

Our weakest position in recent years is right edge back row..with the likes of journey men and plodders filling the position..Matterson solves that…

Garner I like but does not have the experience week in week out 80 min forward in him yet..Matterson does..no more Rochow McQueen Chee-Kam etc etc

Twal has lock written all over him imo.

8\. Packer
9\. Farah/Liddle
10\. Matulino
11\. Lawrence
12\. Matterson
13\. Twal

So ET doesn't make the team or he plays at lock ?

I like the idea of Mikaele/Twal at lock but how will the defence look without ET there ? Assuming Matterson plays on the right I wonder how good his defence is there. Marsters and Nofo aren't exactly consistent defenders.

I think so too. It's a much stronger looking pack with Twal at lock, though now we will most likely lose Musgrove it makes us a bit light on in the front row department, so Twal will probably end up having to stay in the prop rotation.

Lost Sue and Grant from an already struggling pack with virtually no experienced replacement up front. Mikaele has big wraps on him and lets hope he can live up to them, but he's still unproven at NRL level.

Could not agree more, we finally get a square peg in the square hole, and people want to go back to a round one :crazy

I agree GNR this would be our strongest run-on pack. I’m just concerned it leaves us with a weak bench. I like the idea of a Twal/Mikaele lock rotation. Rowdy & Matterson I assume would be expected to play 80min maybe subbing with ET if required. But who makes up our prop rotation? Eiso, Aloiai, Musgrove (?). Do we play Matterson at prop if McQueen comes good?

Too many unknowns at this stage & has me stumped. However if the likes of Eiso & Aloiai step up this year then I think we’ll be in a good position. At this stage we definitely need more props.

Hope the boys are training the house down!

Matterson is a tackling machine and was putting up big tackle numbers with high efficiency playing on the right for the Roosters prior to his injury last season. He will be heavily involved in the defence even if he's playing on an edge (like Gillett is known for). If Maguire does want to go with a bigger middle then Matterson's presence will make the loss of ET's work rate in the middle less of a blow.

100% Geo, don't try to playing him in a position we are OK in versus a position we have been very ordinary in.

Matterson is a quality second rower. A starting second rower for last year's premiers. Outside of Rowdy we have no established first grade quality second rowers. He plays second row for mine.

Garner can warm the bench. He'll get his turn soon enough but can ply his trade off the bench until then.
