I doubt very much Benji will be sacked until at least next season is finished, or maybe halfway next season if we don’t start off well next year. The club has put itself in a tough situation, should Benji have been appointed coach? Most likely not but that was done before the new admin came in and really it wouldn’t have been fair to judge Benji before a ball came into play. Plus there really wasn’t anyone available to take over from him before the season started.
Ultimately the decision of sacking Sheens and giving Benji the job before the apprenticeship (if you want to call it that) was up, was what in the end cost them their jobs for the inability to stick to a plan. When Richo came in he made it clear he is going to be different than the previous admin. If Benji gets sacked after this year, the media will be all over Richo and the club, and ultimately they’ll say different admin, same problems of not sticking to a plan and will make the club look even more worse then it already is. I doubt not many candidates will come forward to coach knowing if they don’t get the club finals bound in their first year, they’ll be out of a job.
Benji needs at least next year to be given a fair chance. Not many NRL coaches have been sacked after their first season in recent years. Sheens was the first in a long time. Do I think Benji can do it? Most likely not, but we won’t have any chance of change if the new admin decide to act like the old and bring in someone else after one season. Like I said, not many will put their hands up knowing they won’t last if they fail after one season.
