OFFICIAL SG Ball Cup

It’s a pity the Wests Magpies SG Ball team lost their first 3 games as they have some real attacking class and look goood enough to beat anyone on their day.
It’s been said that Riley Oitmann is like a young Papenhauzen clone and there certainly is plenty of similarities, particularly his blinding speed,
Archie Duncombe playing as a tough, hard running and ball playing lock has been very impressive in their resurgence.
The 2 biggest names being Makasini and Taupau-Moors are really starting to show their class, particularly Taupau-Moors who looks a natural leader.

Good to see the Magpies hitting their straps. They certainly aren't the finished product this season but have been improving each week over the past 3 weeks. Not sure how far they can go in this comp this season, I think it will depend how much Edwards-Moeke & Patrick can improve in attack and cut some errors out of their games.

Yesterday I thought Oitmann & Godinet were outstanding. I have been a fan of Oitmann for a few seasons with the only thing holding him back is his size. He's both shortish & thin but possesses lightning acceleration & speed and plays well above his weight in the last line of defence. He's a footballer with IQ, natural instincts, great backing up sense & can kick too (field, short & goal). Yep think similar to Papz. As long as he can add some muscle bulk to his frame over the next 2 years, he's a keeper.

My player of the year points for Wests this round (cumulative in brackets):

7 Oitmann (14)
6 Godninet (13)
5 Taupau-Moors (12)
4 Laupepa (10)
3 Duncombe (14)
2 Fuatimau (8)
1 Patrick

Just want to add how impressed I am with Saint Fuatimau's defence. His POY points this week are mainly due to some crucial defensive plays which brought turnovers. Him & fill-in right centre Muliaga are beasts in defence on that right edge with Godinet.

PS. Still to watch the Balmain game, will try to put myself through it tonight or tomorrow night for POY points.

3 thank youz n a bow ,4 simplifying(no crap ,endless words here) on our junior performances. Future is bright

Wests were pretty strong overall. A good win against a decent side.
Balmain had their momentum smashed to pieces by a much bigger, stronger, faster and more skillful side. Everyone just had a shocker, bad day at the office. A couple of unlucky bounces either side of halfway and a 12 point turnaround...

Watched the Balmain game last night on Bar TV. It was a weird game in that Souths dominated us through the middle. They had superior ruck speed & leg speed through the middle which had our markers on the backfoot all game. But we held them out in defence for a lot of it.

A combination of our heavy defensive load, the heat and 2 extremely lucky tries to Souths either side of halftime took its toll on us in the end. Souths won through the middle and having some zippy x-factor players who could take advantage of our fatigue.

Our forwards were pretty poor though. Bunt had his worst game of the season as did Zac Farr-McKay.

For POY points, these are the only players I could consider (cumulative in brackets) ...

5 Tannous (14) generally directed our attack well & defended well for most part
4 Tauiafaiga (21) our best yardage player once again & good in defence
3 Haywood (11) not his best game & at least 1 bad missed tackle but still one of our better players
2 Partch (7) very strong especially in 1st half with his carries & no fault in defence
1 Stone (6) made his carries & tackles without standing out

At this level you really want to take a gamble on a speedy or really powerful youngster and hope you can nurture them to become a star.
Lots of above average players but few that have elite potential other than Haywood (and Brookes)

I heard Brookes is still 2-3 weeks away too

Narrow escape 22 to 18 for our Wests team. They were well off their best and goal kicking (or lack of a decent one) nearly cost them the game. Still....sometimes you have got to win ugly and the boys got it done. On to next week!
Scored the winning try in the last 10 mins. Archie Duncombe had a stormer scoring a try, setting up the winner in his usual busy game in A & D. Fullback Riley Oitmann was another standout and continues to be our most dangerous player & saved the game in the final seconds taking a contested bomb on our line.

Makasini was rocks'n diamonds with his hands letting him down today, about 3-4 handling errors and a bad miss in defence. A try and some good runs but has plenty to work on.

A good team effort by our middles & backrowers laid the platform.

Massive test next week up against the 1st placed Eels! Our whole club have a chance to sweep the Eels from Juniors up to NRL next weekend (not the other way around!). Make up for the senior results this weekend!

I am loving what Oitmann is bringing to the side at fb. Agree that we look most dangerous when he has ball in hand.

Archie appeared to clock off at marker when their dummy half went over untouched. But made up for it with a couple of big moments later on.

Good to see them get some wins on the board after a sluggish start to the season! Our 2 SG Ball sides will be the ones in with a chance come finals time.
