Shane Shackleton

No offense Happy, but clubs who use terms like rebuilding phase or transitional phase are poorly organised. Proper clubs, just like any good organisations are not up for two years, and down for three, and up for two etc., As much as I hate them, and Storm and Broncos are perfect examples. Always hunting near the top.

Good organisations are always evolving and address these issues before they arise. If it means hiring a 30yo bloke to bolster the top, and then you do it. It means planning and patience. The players are patient when young and want to stay, so they don't go searching for a gig somewhere else at 19\. If you make your house somewhere they want to be, and then they stay.

Not too many leave those quality clubs because they breed success and loyalty. Be honest and upfront,
with quality players like Shackleton could be and you are guaranteed results.

So when Melbourne lose Smith ,Cronk and Slter within a few years they won't struggle Using Melbourne as a comparison isn't a good idea

Brisbane will struggle to make the Top 10 let alone Top 8 No Lockyer ,Civonaceva and now Beale gone and an uncertain future with Yow Yeh Brisbane has the pick of 80% of the juniors in a city the population of nearing 2 million to themselves No use comparing us to them either

We have many aging players in our roster

Utai ,Tuqiri,Bell, Farah,Fulton,Anasta even Marshall is on the downside of his career

We need to rebuild our style of football , and bring some youngsters through in 2013

Like it or not Swordy we are in the most important rebuilding/transition stage of this clubs short life and we get it wrong we will struggle for at least the next 3-4 years to come

He is ok.

My obvious issue would be getting him after letting Moors go who outplayed him at every turn when they faced off.

Really whatever the coach wants i am behind at this stage

I thought this too, but I think Moors leaving was before he knew Potter was taking over the reigns.

Moors will thrive at Melbourne though.

Looking at our prop depth, you would think that the club would be stupid not to at least consider someone with Shackletons size/experience/commitment.

He has worked back from some pretty bad injuries and would not take his career lightly at this point. For a cheap depth signing I can't see why not.

Don't know to be honest

We really are in a transitional stage and signing 30 year olds isn't going to help the future of the club

Remember that in general, front rowers mature much later than backs.

I hear ya happy, and I accept we are transitioning but that just proves my point that we haven't been well run or organised. Brisbane will certainly make the finals next year, and if not for an extremely uncharacteristic last 6 weeks for them this year, they would have been finalists for the 20th consecutive year or something stupid like that. I will be very surprised if the Storm just disappear when the so called big three finish. They will be finalists for another half dozen years meaning 12 or so years near the top, regardless of their cheating period.

A test for us to get things sorted and systems in place.

In my opinion he will not.

Lazy at the Weststigers and will not make first grade at the Storm.

No loss.

When will we get our act together re: recruitment…forwards in particular.

Its groundhog day....even worse

We find ourselves yet again in the position we were in early this year - Cashy/ Mason

I guess it makes it easier to choose when theres only one left.....

i believe he was forced out of parra… he was on good coin... so was poore they needed to free up cash... to spend the money in better positions...
im suprised penny didnt hold onto him...
i think he would be a perfect fit for the tigers.... we need another experienced prop on the bench for atleast 2013... we seem to have some cubs coming through that would benefit from another year of grooming in the reggies..

Do you think we should still keep an eye out for another depth forward Willow, or focus on the younger guys at the club to step up if injuries strike?

It is very dangerous to throw 20 year olds props into the deep end of 1st grade. Anyone who followed Matt Groat's career would be aware of this. O.K. some will say what about Aaron Woods, but he is a rare exception. Better to blood your young front rowers gradually and develop their confidence. When they are ready, begin with short stints in first grade. Experienced front rowers like Shackleton are likely to blossom under the right coaching and can quite capabably fill the void until the youngsters are ready to play a leading role. He also won't bust the bank.

If the Shack had something to offer at a bargain basement price I reckon he might have drawn the interest of the purple team down south. Bellamy is the master of spotting cheap meat … and he isn't looking particularly peckish when it comes to ole Bluey Shane.
Now that's not to say we shouldn't move on the guy but it's interesting to see the general lack of interest across the various clubs.

Also, Matty Groat ... Has he been signed yet ... I've been asking for months ????

If Shane can fill the void for 2013 then why not?

Just when you think you have enough props buy another one!!

He is a bit of a goer from memory.
The prop depth doesn't look too great at the moment. Here's hoping there is a strong off-season from a couple of young guys looking to impress.

Do you really think so underdog? Moors had plenty of opportunities to impress and all he did in the end was run a couple of good wide lines. I can't remember him ever pulling off a great tackle, but if Bellamy can bring more out of him then great.

I liked him, but in my opinion he has never achieved much and I think he is to blame far more than Sheens is. He should have been standing up ling before kids like Woods but he didn't. Question is, who will now take that role?

Shacks isnt a front rower , he was a handy backrower at easts but no thanks for a 30 year old with injury problems who is pretty small in size.
Wests tried to get him last season and pulled out for these reasons .
I seen him play plenty of games for Wenty and he wasnt a standout in VB cup .

Most other clubs have probably got their house in order re recruitment…..trainings already begun

MS may be at their limit...we might b at our cap limit....we might have someone else in mind

As usual it seems we are left in a position where we cannot be choosy...

Your middle sentence there Ink … pure poetry ... Stick on the theme music to the X Files and rejig it as an earnest discussion between Scully and Mulder and I'm caught up in the moment, staring knowingly off into the distance whilst nodding in gentle agreement.

It's true, Melbourne Storm may be at their limit, we may also be capped up, we may equally have someone else in mind ... Shack may become a dud buy or he may actually win the Dally M player of the year whilst on the bearest of match payments ... Who really knows, but the dark eyed sage who cackles maniacally into the mid winters draft that whistles in behind the Pratten Park Grandstand (you may know him as Eric).

If all else fails ... The lad would make a fine skipper of the Magpies Bundy Cup Team ... If such a foray is ultimately unfurled.
