Hull FC in talks with Shannon McDonnell to rip up his contract
By Hull Daily Mail | Posted: April 08, 2014
Hull FC have opened discussions with Shannon McDonnell to bring the full-back's contract to an early end, but the two parties have so far been unable to reach a settlement. The protracted talks are still ongoing, with Hull hopeful a pay-off can be agreed with the 26-year-old. As first reported by the Mail in February, McDonnell no longer has a future at the KC, despite being under contract until the end of the season.
Discussions with the Australian opened weeks ago, but a satisfactory outcome cannot be agreed. McDonnell has not featured for Hull since a hamstring injury in the Challenge Cup semi-final victory over Warrington last year and he only recently finished a lengthy rehabilitation process.
The emergence of Jamie Shaul and Lee Radford's elevation to coach prompted a change in direction for the Black and Whites, who want to free up room on their salary cap to pursue another targets. When approached by the Mail, owner Adam Pearson admitted talks were continuing, but he was unable to discuss matters at length because of the nature of the situation. "We feel it would be better to negotiate an ending of Shannon's deal," he said. "With Shannon's injury and Lee's decision to take a different direction, we feel an exit is the best solution for all parties and we are in the midst of those negotiations. "It is now Shannon's call to take our offer to leave the club."
After signing a bumper deal when joining from Hull KR at the end of the 2012 campaign, McDonnell is one of FC's big earners, with the club feeling the money could be better spent elsewhere, given Shaul's presence and plenty of cover from Jordan Rankin and Richard Horne.
McDonnell is understood to be disappointed and frustrated by the outcome. There have been suggestions he could move to Bradford Bulls after their recent takeover, a deal which would make his exit much easier to complete.
