Don't get the hysteria. The guy is terrible but it's not like we're signing him for $500k a year and promising him the starting fullback role. He is TRIALLING for a second tier contract. If he gets it he will more then likely be on the wing/bench for nsw cup…at best.

The hysteria (or major concerns ) would be that this is our biggest signing for 2015

2014 wasn't much better

If we have another bad season in 2015 , who will want to leave and how bad will the recruitment be in 2016 ??

Again none of the signing are NRL players , they are ESL players and NSW Cup or NYC Cup players

Happy I understand where you are coming from…but we have no more coin to sign anyone half decent for 2015 and beyond

If McDonnell is trialling for a second tier contract worth let's say $70K it is a big slide from what it would appear he was earning at Hull between 2012 - 2014\. This is clear from the following April 2014 Hull newspaper report; "After signing a bumper deal when joining from Hull KR at the end of the 2012 campaign, McDonnell is one of FC's big earners, with the club feeling the money could be better spent elsewhere.

Wow you go to Robina for 1 day and miss all the excitement…..

People wanted experience now it's the wrong kind....

Wish they'd bring back Benny G

Lolo is an interesting proposition.....Drag fans I know rate him highly...

Anyway they are only trialling for a second tier contract try not to get in to much of a tizz ...

The bloke could barely ever stand on his own two legs , he was forever slipping over

Thought he went all right in his limited opportunities at Newcastle…..and from people I've talked to he wenr alight in the ESL...

Oh and Yes we do need State Cup Players Wests Tigers are fielding a team in that comp...Makes me wonder thought what it means for the likes of Farrell and Rowe....as I said no need to get into a Tizz

If the semi last yr is any guide, i'm not sure if Farrell has much of a future. Think there are probably better options.

And I understand that , so I'd rather we work with the juniors than waste what little bucks on blokes who couldn't crack it 7 years ago

Getting a bit annoyed with the WT's reunion party , as Flip said a few years ago "we're getting the band back together "

Alexaki, it would be a real comfort for me and most fans if you or someone could indicate where all our coin went and what year it will starting to roll in (hallelujah). For all we know Wests Tigers could still be in heavy debt for the next two or more years.

Newtown don't forget his negotiated a release from his final year of his Hull contract , I'm 😱pen_mouth: that his one of there high earners , so let's say he was on $200,000 a year at Hull for arguments sake (I'm going of that figure cause his one of there high earners 😱pen_mouth: ) and Hull say will give you $80,000 to release you from our duties , get's the nod from his Dad senior McDonnell that Taylor will sign him for $70,000 for the year in total could be on = $150,000 a year and is back home , might get 5 games throughout the year , if he impresses? Ricky Stuart will come to the rescue from 2016 onwards  .
Don't worry i'm just mumbling on :bash

I'm pretty sure Warren McDonnell has nothing to do with WT's recruitment - i.e. signing first graders from other clubs.

I was of the belief that his role relates to younger players in the system. The criticism of him on here, imo, is over the top.

Regarding Shannon McDonnell, well at least he's a lot more experienced than when he was here previously, lets just see what happens before we call for blood.

The Dragons recruit could be a good one.

If only that was true. McDonnell has his nose in just about everything that happens at Wests Tigers.
How someone so incompetent has managed to keep his job for so long will for ever be a mystery.

10 years after the grand final win, Pat Richards is back at the Tigers and the player who was going to replace him if he couldn't play that night is now likely to be back at the club also. There can't be another club in the NRL that brings past players back like the Tigers can.

What's everyone so stressed about? We picked up a hack from the ESL on a second tier contract. Unless he finds some hitherto unseen talent in preseason and trial games, Shannon McDonnell is not in the picture for our NRL side. He is there in case Tedesco, Rowe and Moltzen are all injured at the same time, that is all. Hull needed to clear out some dead wood, the Tigers needed a 4th string fullback. This is what happens to players who never quite made it, they finish up shunted between clubs on second tier minimum wage contracts. This is not cause to write off Jason Taylor.

Actually we did manage to have all three fullbacks injured last year, and this time there's no Blake Austin at supersub. Shannon might get another run in the NRL after all. Oh well I'm sure he at least knows where to stand on the last tackle and can usually catch a ball. That might stave off disaster when we've run out of players again.

Seems he'd be a replacement for Hitchcox, if he actually signs.
A back three of him, Moltzen and Rowe would really strike fear in to the state cup opposition…

Must admit this smacks of a leg up from the old man but does anybody have proof of this before we execute. Gallant who is supposed to be running round for the magpies this year was the better option ( a decade ago ). Ps the dragons kid might turn out ok.

Never fear people!

After JT watches Shannon Mac slip and slide about like a deer on ice for a few hours, the right call will be made.

Just some facts to go with the hysteria.

In his last year he played for a mug side in England who just happened to win the Grand Final. He did not play in the game as he had a broken jaw.

I saw games he was involved with and he acquitted himself quite well. He was their No 1 fullback all season.

Wests Tigers have recently welcomed both Shannon McDonnell and Wesley Lolo on train and trial contracts leading into the 2015 season.

Both players have been given until the end of February to train full-time with the NRL squad and potentially earn a second-tier contract for the upcoming season.

McDonnell, 27, made his NRL debut for Wests Tigers in 2005 and later played for the Newcastle Knights before leaving for England in 2012\. The fullback played for Hull KR, Hull FC and most recently St Helens in Super League.

Lolo, a prop or second rower, played for St George Illawarra in the Holden Cup over the past two seasons.

Head Coach Jason Taylor is looking forward to working with both McDonnell and Lolo over the coming weeks.

“We were looking to bolster our depth in both of those positions and these guys have been given an opportunity to show us if they are worthy of a contract,” he said.

Why would someone repost the original article on page 7??

I think there's a lot of people out there who don't realise that Wests Tigers play across 3 grades! Not just the NRL, but the NSW Cup and NYC as well…!

I wonder what calibre of fullback you think we should be signing for our NSW Cup side to replace Hitchcox? Maybe we should have signed Barba or Milford to play NSW Cup?

And so many people compain about how young our side is. The club explores the option of 'possibly' signing a 27 year old as a backup backup fullback/winger and everyone goes into meltdown?

While i've never rated him, he should be sufficient quality to play NSW Cup. As Simon said, he was a regualr fullback in the SL when he wasn't injured.

The same way that our youth in the NRL side benefits from having experience to help the younger players, so too does the NSW Cup side. So why not have a few older players to help our youngsters coming through as they take their first steps towards senior footy by playing NSW Cup?

If worst comes to worst and we get another load of injuries in the backline i'd rather have him on the wing for 2-3 games than move Sirro or Sue out wide!

Or if he is totally crap in pre season he gets thrown to the gutter and we focus on our kids as we already were... Having a couple of abcks over 25 isn't a bad thing, especially for minimum wage and a second tier contract!

Yes he wouldn't even get a sniff if his dad wasn't at the club, but then again WT might not be able to afford anyone at full price so a player willing to play for mates rates isn't such a bad thing either.
