Sharks fined $1 mil, Flanno gone for 12 months

yes it is. and those RESPONSIBLE should be punished, not people who have come into the club and assumed similar roles 3 years later!

And have they not done that? Trent Elkin was at Parra, and now he's been deregistered. Flanagan has "overseen" it, and he's been suspended.

The message needs to be sent to the organisation, irrespective of whether every party involved is still at the club or not. These activities were committed by employees of the Cronulla Sharks organisation on their payroll and most likely on their premises and as an active part of football operations. The club as a whole needs to pay the price as well.

I initially thought the fines were light too…seems with the suspended period Flanno can resume midway thru next year

Disagree on forfeitting points in future seasons.....

yea but someone was suggesting a 4 million dollar fine and points stripped 3-4 years from now which i completely disagree with.

i think 1 million is a touch light, but given their financial state it is still quite hefty.

I don't necessarily agree with points docking either, but anyone claiming the penalty is harsh would be singing a different tune if they had won a grand final off the back of this programme.

not harsh at all, i think it's right on the money. fine a little light, but fair given the circumstances

also, the doping did seem a bit more systemic and widespread at essendon. plus they are a lot richer

Fine is light, Flanagan should have gotten 18 months and be dereegistered.

The club should also have all points stripped for 2011 and given a symbolic wooden spoon on the record books…..their first ever BTW.

Lets face it, the club is in for much more hurt in the near future.

I'm still confused about this. Wasn't Flannagan only the strangth and conditioning coach or assistant coach when this went down??? Wasn't Ricky Stuart in charge at the time??? Does anyone know the timeframe of the offence and who was in charge at the time? Mods, please delete post if that breaks liability rules.

NRL cannot decide the severity of fines/suspension on how rich or poor the club is. In fact the reason the club allowed/encouraged the doping to take place was to win more games, obtain bigger following and more sponsorship thereby making the club much richer. So if another poor club took the same path they would expect similar lenient fines/suspensions? No justice in that.

Flanagan was head coach in 2011, which is the year the alleged doping occurred. Trent Elkin was the head trainer. Both are now provisionally suspended with a right of appeal.

Exactly Newtown. pHyR3 just doesn't seem to get it. **Their financial circumstances can have no bearing on the punishments at all.**

I only suggested points penalties in future season because it is a harsh and extreme penalty. Which is what cheating deserves. They took drugs to enhance performance and win games, yet the team gets no penalties for that from the NRL?

Essendon got away with it completely, but that just shows how corrupt the AFL is. Lots of sweeping going on down in Melbourne.

Whether punishments send a club to the brink, closure or just make things a bit tighter than usual is besides the point. 400k of the fine is delayed anyway so its really like a 600k fine for cheating, endangering the lives of your players and bringing the game into disrepute. It's a fraction of their salary cap for next season and it's a joke.

It's like a banker being charged with fraud and skimming accounts, only to be fined a small sum of money, being suspended for a while and told not to do it again. It doesn't send a message to not even consider bending the rules. Maybe the NRL should withhold sponsorship money from them?!

I think that it is going to get far worse for the Sharks.

This result from the NRL today is in regards to the NRL Code of Conduct. That's all.

When ASADA finalise their investigation it will get far worse I believe.

Cronulla's own internal investigation advised similar outcomes but the incoming board reversed those decisions. That, to me, shows gross misgovernance.

Very lenient punishment when 400k of the mil fine will be suspended & Flanno will only be suspended for 9 months once they jump through the NRL's hoops to receive the reduced punishment. Somehow I don't think they will be appealing the decision.

Tell me how this is different from the Storm or Bulldogs drama

Why haven't the club been hurt in this way , by stripping them of their competition points in 2014

Surprised the ASADA investigation didn't precede the NRL investigation .The one right I believe the Sharks deserve is to know ( to a degree ) what they are up against in regards to the NRL punishments

they probably found in that 12 month investigation that flanagan had very little to do with the programme (perhaps his only fault is poor accountability and research into products) and that the assistant coach or whatever was the main source.

i think punishing those most responsible is a fair attitude and that seems to be whta the NRL/ASADA have come up with.

Do you understand pHyR3 these fines have nothing to do with the ASADA investigation

why not?

take car fines for instance. I think car fines should be as a proportion of one's income (with some kind of limit) just like many scandanavian countries have. Giving a $500 fine on someone on a 25k salary is FAR worse than the same fine on a multi millionaire. How on earth with a couple of hundred dollars deter a multi millionaire from not speeding or whatever again? it wont.

similarly, fining some almost bankrupt club 2 million dollars is completely different from fining a club with mega-rich backers.

Whilst he might of had little to do with it based of the punishments handed out, he's just as accountable once he became aware of what Elkin was doing & decided to keep it in house & not tell the NRL.

we don't know those details do we?

Snippet from an article I read this arvo

While Flanagan's alleged breaches relate to his shortcomings as a boss, including a failure to adequately supervise Elkin and refusal to act once he became aware of unsafe practises
