Sheens: Heat's on Hayne

Far from being worried about the Jarryd Hayne threat, Wests Tigers coach Tim Sheens has placed the pressure on the brilliant Parramatta fullback to live up to the hype in Friday night's blockbuster at the SFS.

A somewhat terse Sheens was keen to play down the impact Hayne may have on the match, even suggesting the Eels match-winner was still far from his best despite single-handedly destroying Manly last weekend.

The Tigers mentor believes the expectation to perform could weigh heavily on the Dally M winner.

"The hype around Jarryd is just more pressure on Jarryd," he said.

"I'm not worried about that. That's pressure on him, not us."

"I noticed earlier in the year he was saying that…the pressure (is on) to deliver what he delivered last year."

Asked if Hayne was back to his best after blitzing Manly, Sheens responded: "I wouldn’t say that. He had a very good second half of football."

So he still has a way to go before hitting top form?

"I'm not saying that. I'm not going to fire anything at Jarryd. I'm just saying he played a good second half of football," Sheens straight-batted.

He was then asked the best way to blunt Hayne's impact on a game.

"Rule him out," came the blunt reply.

He quickly added: "Parramatta aren’t just about Jarryd Hayne; we're not just focusing on one player."

"They're a pretty good side"

But there is no doubt Hayne's name has been mentioned plenty of times as the Tigers pored over the game plan for Friday night.

One tactic the joint venture club insists it won’t be adopting to halt Hayne's brilliance is the long, raking kick over the deadball line.

The ploy worked for St George Illawarra in round one but the Tigers plan to increase – not decrease – the No 1's workload.

"I think that would give Haynesy a bit of a break," skipper Robbie Farah said of the deadball tactic.

"We'll try and make him work hard."

"I don’t know if I've got the answer (to stopping him) but I guess you've got to try and limited his opportunities."

"He's one of those players that's going to pop up all over the park; at first receiver, at dummy half at the end of a shift."

"We've got to be on our game across the park."

Sheens was unhappy with his side's capitulation in the heat against the Roosters in round two, especially in conceding 36 unanswered points after leading 12-0 early.

But he was keen to put Parramatta's recent run in perspective.

"Their form was very scratchy until the second half (against Manly)," Sheens said.

"They’ve played a good half of football but they were 20-0 down and lost their first game and lost their trial."

"They found their form on the back of some good play and a good call (on a forward pass) but that's all you need sometimes - just one good half of footy and couple of things go your way and that can spark you."

"They are a premiership hotshot, they are one of the favourite sides, they are a big side."

"We've got a tough game in front of us. If we control the discipline with the penalty count and control the football; we can be in the game."

The Eels boast a remarkable record against the Tigers, winning nine of the last 10 encounters between the clubs since 2005.

I wish we just would ignore or not answer any questions about Hayne.

Just provides more ammunition for him and Parramatta.

agree totally. We always do it and its foolish. Its like Karma comes back to bite us.

Tough game ahead no doubt. Hayne's second half effort against Manly won't help. Like most players, he thrives on confidence and Parramatta in general seem to love playing the Tigers, the mental battle for them is the easy part against us IMO. It's up to the Tigers to turn that around by playing some good solid football and not letting the Eels get settled.

The hype around Hayne is only focused on his attacking play. At the end of the day, the Tigers can score just as many points as any team in the comp if we get enough ball.Judging by our performance last week, I dont think we should worry about any players in the Parra team. We must be focused on our game first and settle into the game by completing our sets, then if this works, start to ensure we get a good kick away. The biggest concern is when do reach our completions, it will be our turn to tackle and apply pressure.Toughen up Tigers and put a few of these boys on thier bums. If they get up too quick, hit them harder next time. Play with some MUNGREL!!!

Sheens was just on channel 9 briefly, basically calling for Benji not to overplay his hand tomorrow night and try to out-do Hayne in the "flashy brilliance" stakes.

My message to the boys

Forget what you guys are reading about your ability to score points.

It's the Trys you stop that will win you 9 from 10 games.

Can someone tell me what Sheens is trying to acheive here? Stir the most dynamic player in the game? You have tobe kidding Sheens.

Why does he always talk smack before we play Parramatta. I remember him before a crunch game at the back end of 2008 saying the same rubbish, the pressure was on them and we were not scared and we could belt them

Why stir them up? They are often a sleeping giant of a team with a similar non plussed attitude to ours at times. Why stir them?

oh dear oh dear here we go again ammo for the eels great just great how about making them tackle worry about our game geesh

Not really Sheens fault its the media who just cannot stop their over hyping of Hayne. If he is asked a direct question he answers it. The press didn;t get the sound bite they wanted so keep on bagdering him until he say's "yes Jarryd Hayne is wonderful and we are really scared of him, i love his boots by the way!"

Nah…..there is a point there.

If Hayne plays well tonight its Sheensies fault.

And global warming......Sheens.

The moth plague......Sheens.

Gimme a break. :deadhorse:

Yep,thats how I see it.

I thought it was funny he pointed out Parra's form has been scratchy bar 40 mins against Manly.

What about our form, except for 20 Mins against Manly, and 10 at the start of the Roosters game our form has been worst than scratchy.

I don't count the last 15 mins against the roosters, they toke the foot of the peddle.
