Tim Sheens will remain at the helm of the Wests Tigers until the end of 2011 after extending his contract with the NRL club for a further 12 months.

The NRL's longest-serving coach, having overseen 595 games and won four premierships since debuting with Penrith in 1984, the 59-year-old says he will quit if success doesn't come in the next two seasons.

"I asked for a year, not any longer than that, to work with this group," he said after Friday night's 23-12 win over Parramatta.

"If I can't get it to happen then I won't be here and I'd stand down myself on that basis."

He said the move would remove speculation about the job, which had been linked to Cronulla coach Ricky Stuart.

"We're not thinking this year about who's going to be coaching and the speculation, which this season doesn't need," he said.

" … It doesn't guarantee I'm going to be there, we've still got to do the job."

Sheens said the deal had been done on Friday afternoon over coffee with Tigers CEO Stephen Humphreys.

Humphreys agreed Sheens' request for only a 12-month extension meant he had squarely put the pressure on himself to succeed.

"I read a bit into that," he said.

"Tim understands better than anyone that this is a results-orientated business.

"We know we need to take that next step and I think he is challenging himself somewhat in that."

Humphreys said Sheens, who guided the Tigers to an inaugural premiership in 2005 but has failed to take them to the finals since, had an ability to stay fresh despite his 26 years at Penrith, Canberra, North Queensland and the Tigers.

"I really don't think it's an age thing with Tim because mentally I think he's the youngest senior executive we've got around the place because he keeps himself very fresh," Humphreys said.

" ... He's all the time reinventing himself."

Captain Robbie Farah also welcomed the signing, which comes on top of those of Benji Marshall, Keith Galloway and Robert Lui this year.

"Tim's a coach that all of us players respect and he's a reason why a lot of us have re-signed," Farah said.

I'm certainly not one of the coaches admires ..but the club needs stability which in turn will lead to success (hopefully)and by signing the coach for aother 12 months I hope this happens….. but I just can,t get the last 4 years out of my head..It may be time to get behind all involved so we can win another TITLE I for one will move on and support the coach and hope this extention works so that the club we all support rises to it's full potential.

Well there you have it!2012 - a new coach!no doubt the Moths will be happy

I like that he's put it on himself to bring the results. When Sheens signed on with the Tigers, he said his first season they wouldnt make the 8 (we didnt), the 2nd season we'd make the 8 (came 9th) and in his 3rd year we'd make top 4 … well, he was pretty close to the mark with his assessment back then so by saying they'll produce big results in the next year or two has me pumped. Looking forward to an exciting 2010 and 2011!

Humphreys hasn't put a foot wrong yet, and I believe the players gave their approval of Sheens 12 month extension by the effort they put in last night, for a coach most/all of the squad has a lot of respect for.

All will be justified when the Wests Tigers make the Grand Final this year!!

At least this keeps the focus and constant speculation away from us in this very important season

As I see it our weakest position is fullback and more experimenting is needed until we come up with our best option. In my opinion Lawrence is tailor made for that job. He can still be selected at centre for representative duties. Lawrence, Taniela and Lote as the back three equals success. So mister Sheens still has a lot of work to do whatever combination he decides to go with. Ryan continues to improve every game and would be in my team every week.

Good news and a smart move extending for a further 12 months rather than 3-4 years.

haha can we re-open this thread in September. Done Nothing for 4 years. 2 wins to start the year, keeping in mind we always start well and the one loss we had was a big one. Parramatta and Manly were tipped by a lot of experts to miss the 8.

I think its time for change, why not at least wait until the end of the year. Imagine if every year in your job you failed to hit your targets. Sorry boss I failed again, okay well maybe next year. Yep boss again I didnt reach the targets set. etc etc. But hey at least its not as bad when Terry Lamb was coach blah blah blah. We will never learn….

I for one over the past couple of seasons on occasions have questioned wether the Fonz should be retained as our coach,
but when you a chill pill and look at the big picture overall, he is the best for the job…..the players love him...he has done a tremendous job developing players like Moltz and Ayshford just to name a few......Great news!!!!
