What a joke - there was nothing wrong with the rule as it was. You stuffed up the kick you either gave up 20 to 30 metres or downfield or in the case of a goal line dropout you gave up 2 points. Now its a no brainer - all disincentive has been taken away.

It's interesting they decided to do this now; 2023 was arguably the high-point for short restarts in recent decades and there's no reason to think it would reduce in 2024.

It’s all about making the game as fast as possible. It’s why they do the set restarts, why they have abandoned scrums when the ball goes into touch. It’s one of my pet hates.

I am OUTRAGED. Bloody wokies at it again with their fairy rule changes. This ain't tiddly winks this is FOOTBALL. You run it straight, you get smashed, you go to the pub and neck a few pints, maybe churn through a few durries, then you get up and do it all again the next week. These snowflakes are going straight for our bloody jugular. What's next, get tackled then you have to give the attacker a kiss on the forehead? This is where the game is going. As the great man Tommy once said, we need to bloody "HARDEN UP!!!" Back in my day you had forearms flying everywhere. I'm lucky I can still form sentences from all the hits that these days would be considered "illegal". Bah, a shoulder to the head was a bloody good hit back then! Gone are those days. You really have to shake your head and wonder where the game is going. GAME'S GONE SOFT!

Yep. How long till we see a push for a shortened version as with cricket. Certainly hope it doesn't come to that but the TikTok generation surely can't be expected to focus on one thing for a whole 80 mins.

I see it as kind of the opposite. In the olden days you could win the ball back in a scrum or raking at the ruck, even stripping the ball. yes I’m pretty old. Short kick offs are a contest for possession which we have taken out of the game over time.

I think the next major change will be quarters .
Twenty minutes then 5 min break, then another 20 , 10 min for half time, rinse, repeat.
Better for Tv broadcasters and new age fans who’ll need a vape or white wine etc. it’s a moral imo once they finalise the expansion locations.

Hope not. The 40 mins adds a bit of fatigue factor to the game that is part of its fabric imo.

Totally agree but 5 or 10 mins of continuos ads will pay a lot of bills. Look at the stoppages/ads in the NFL. I may be wrong but I doubt it on this one.
