Embattled Brisbane have received a boost with their No.1 centre Kotoni Staggs chasing a long-term deal in his bid to become a Bronco for life.

Sport Confidential can reveal Staggs wants to stay long-term at the Broncos and will only test his value on the open market if he can’t strike a new deal at Red Hill in the coming weeks.

But Staggs finished the season in sizzling form, headlined by his two-try demolition of the Cowboys in round 23, and there is a view he is now ahead of Cobbo in the retention pecking order at the Broncos.

It is the $325,000 salary-cap dilemma for Broncos coach Kevin Walters.

Out-of-favour hooker Cory Paix has become one of the highest-paid players in the Queensland Cup after digging his heels in and happily playing reserve grade on a healthy Broncos contract.

Brisbane’s problem is that Paix is on way too much money for a Queensland Cup player. And unless they can shift him, his wage keeps eating up space in their salary cap.

Paix has attracted several offers from Sydney-based NRL rivals, but the 24-year-old is happily settled in Brisbane with his partner and has no interest in moving south of the border.

Veteran duo Martin Taupau and Delouise Hoeter have saved their careers at the Broncos just months after the pair appeared headed for the Red Hill exits.

Sport Confidential can reveal Taupau and Hoeter have survived Brisbane’s end-of-season review with the ageing warriors clinching 12-month extensions to suit up for the Broncos in 2025.

Bulldogs or Roosters the only likely options, Penrith maybe too, he may reduce his price tag in the hopes of chasing a premiership at the roosters or riff

It's pretty absurd to have such a late awards night. Optimistic perhaps, but the wooden spooners were never likely to be in the GF.

But yes the culling is probably nowhere near finished so does give more time to get this sorted before official announcements.

Yea u not wrong I think I was caught up in the moment watching knights vs dolphins, I love the way all 3 of the fainu bros play and I wouldn’t move him either

If we could get him for 600k for next season it would be a good deal.
Not so good if we are still paying him 600k in 2026 and 2027.
I’d say a fair & reasonable offer would be paying up to a maximum of 700k for 2025 with the Eels paying whatever he is owed above 700k.
Cutting back to 400k in 2026 and 2027.
We don’t really want him for 2027 as he will be too old, but if it clinches the deal in getting him to sign with us for 2025, then I don’t think retaining him on 400k for 2027 would hurt us too much, his experience should stilll come in handy for our emerging forwards, particularly the middles.

The way the cap is I would take him at $ 600 x 3 years , you will get 2 out of him no problem , he is injury free , plays big minutes , add the guy coming back from Pommy land that folks on hear are talking about today , that would be 2 good gets , leaves Richo 1 more to grab

Sport confidential can reveal Staggs wants to stay long-term and will only test his value on the open market if he can’t strike a new deal at Red Hill in the coming weeks. The clock is ticking for the Broncos to secure the centre before he is eligible for free agency on November 1.

It is understood the Broncos have yet to table a new deal for Staggs, giving Brisbane seven weeks to upgrade the flyer before he can weigh up lucrative offers from NRL rivals. Staggs is settled in Brisbane and his preference is to remain at the Broncos, who are confronting a salary-cap squeeze with the club having to upgrade Reece Walsh and Selwyn Cobbo. The backline trio are all off-contract at the end of the next season and while the Broncos are confident they can retain all three, it won’t be a cheap exercise within the constraints of the salary cap.

In moments it’s very obvious who the more talented player is. Stef just didn’t give us many moments this year.

Adding the best tackle busting prop to the minor premiers is a pretty scary thought.

Pole shows promise, but not sure he’s as good as hyped on here sometimes.

He would be handy as long as we do not pay him anymore than 250 and he is viewed as a depth signing to compete with the likes of Alex Seyfarth as our number 15 who is versatile and can play on an edge, in the middle or in the centres if required.
Obviously form permitting he could earn himself a starting edge back row spot if he is playing well enough.
There is no doubt we need someone who will not take up too much salary cap space but provides depth in our back row.
The only two worthwhile recruits who fit this description look to be either Sione Mata’utia or Billy Burns who is also off contract and would likely cost a little bit less.
