Not sure on the legalities, but it could all be solved if the NRL stipulates that to have a contract with a get out clause, the club must have an equal option to terminate in the contract. The game is slowly devolving into the NFL contract wise. As a Philly fan, I remember years ago Donavan McNabb signed a five year extension, 20 million guaranteed (Or some crazy figure like that). The next season he was playing for the Redskins. Contracts have always been only worth the paper they are printed on, but it’s getting to a new level. Contracts have clauses coming out of their arse. There is zero guarantee that Brown sees out 10 years at Newcastle. There’s no way. Even Luai has them with us. And if by some miracle we retain Galvin, he will too. I think I’d be able to cop it if when clubs announced signings they make mention of these things. I get the details are sensitive and we don’t need to know all of the ins and outs, but it’s extremely misleading to announce “player X has signed with the club till at least the end of 2032, giving off the belief that it’s set in stone, only for a year or two later, the club turns around and says “Oh yeah, about that contract…”
This whole let me get my guaranteed 10 years salary, but I can perpetually look around for a better deal thing is stupid.
