Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Doesn't seem like all that long ago we were over relying on our Juniors and people were calling for is to focus on buying players. Either they didn't live up to expectations or they were poached when we needed them. Well that policy sure went to crap. Guess it's back to the future.

That was still 5-6 years ago. Success has a big impact on a club's ability to retain juniors. If you're making the finals they'd be less inclined to leave.

If we can get some on field success and make the finals and our new COE complete, then we'd have more bargaining power to compete with the big clubs.

@rustycage The retention of our junior talent has been appalling in the near past. Time to excel in this Department as well as the identification and recruitment of the best junior talent.

Which of our best juniors have actually left? Fifita and Tedesco? Paps? Who are the others that we failed to retain, that are actually proving to be any good?

@THE_POM Thanks for your reply, i/we really appreciate it. I presume our last offer was tabled with the intention of retaining Chris Lawrence....if we are not re-signing Chris then we can up the ante?

So you would prefer to not to develop junior strength .... something that is a key requirement for success in any sport organisation ..... really ..... seriously .... your just having a lough.

@momo_amp_medo There has to be an inducement by the NRL for clubs to bring up and keep that talent .. a kind of Salary cap advantage, would not have to be huge but an inducement non the less !

Problem is they would be hurting the rorters

Oh sorry I forgot about the brown paper bags

Obviously wouldn't hurt the rorters so it might help us a bit but rorters would only have to get bigger paper bags to wipe out our advantage

So we shouldn't expect to much for 2020 then re roster changes (Was obvious anyway). 2021 will be interesting as McQueen, Matulino and most likely ET will be gone. Bit of cash there. Plus Marshall will be gone and grub might even be gone by then. Not to mention Packer. God knows what's happening with that guy. Is he still alive?

Pretty much. Packer I'm pretty sure has had surgery on his foot/toe

Turf toe I heard - 12 month rehab

@jirskyr The loss of Moses and Papenhuyzen not bad enough for you? Throw in Tatola and Douehi holding their own at Souths and, Sul at the high flying Eagles and i'd suggest our retention has been appalling. The fact is we struggle for quality first graders but the solutions were at our own doorstep. In addition, we had JAC whose impact at the Storm is noticeable especially when he is not in their side.

Madge will be at Newcastle shortly ...probably be another mute point

Madge is smart. Reading between the lines we won’t have much room to move next year. Signing young players that will be challenging for first grade in 21/22 and players to fill holes until then. Key will be offloading players and retirement of Matulino it’s the only way he can improve the roster in the short term.

Roster management is tricky we need to move on from players on the downhill now or in 2 years time as it’s no good having a good player who will be struggling by the time we have cap room.

Well things look a little bleak for 2020. Little wriggle room in the cap and no obvious junior ready to claim a FG spot. Add Farah retirement and Liddle’s injury. So the poor suffering fans have to wait another 18 months. Thank you Ivan Cleary for stuffing up our club

Absolutely not. I'm all for Juniors coming through. I'm just stating that we as a collective were tired of relying on youth, being let down and pillaged. There was no reward for bringing Juniors through and we had heaps of them. We did all the work and suffered for it. So we bought and that didn't work out so well either. I'd much rather bring our own through and be successful.

@rustycage There was nothing wrong with buying players , the problem was and is WHO was bought .. a mix of both is the right mix.
