Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Well things look a little bleak for 2020. Little wriggle room in the cap and no obvious junior ready to claim a FG spot. Add Farah retirement and Liddle’s injury. So the poor suffering fans have to wait another 18 months. Thank you Ivan Cleary for stuffing up our club

Spot on. It’s why I have said the club needs to stick with Madge long term. He can build clubs the right way. Players want to join clubs that will challenge every year and that leads to better contracts. It’s a vicious circle we need to get out of as players take less to go to strong clubs Origin, international Footy etc is at risk. Struggling clubs pay overs to suit the coach of the day as they know it’s perform or out in 2 years. Discipline and junior development and retention have to be key. With Madge and likely new facilities keeping them at Concord should be easy. It’s second to Rabbits and Roosters in terms of a place to live for young rich athletes.

@jirskyr The loss of Moses and Papenhuyzen not bad enough for you? Throw in Tatola and Douehi holding their own at Souths and, Sul at the high flying Eagles and i'd suggest our retention has been appalling. The fact is we struggle for quality first graders but the solutions were at our own doorstep. In addition, we had JAC whose impact at the Storm is noticeable especially when he is not in their side.

This is a pretty silly comment...Papenhuyzen was plagued by injury at the Tigers, stuck behind Tedesco and weighed 70kg dripping wet, plus he didn't stand out in the 20's either - right decision at the time to let him go. Suli was turning up to training and falling asleep before he got out of the car - the club gave him multiple chances and he wasn't interested - his brief stint at the Bulldogs didn't change that.

Suli was also lazy in the juniors....and 'we' made him the highest paid teenager in NRL history.

@Milky Sezer is signed until end 2020 and has stated he wants to stay at the Raiders and "fight for his position". Sam Williams is a better target.

Yeah, we have been guilty paying overs for potential - Suli was one example, you could argue Brooks and Moses also. I can see what Madge is doing by recruiting some top juniors - the Storm develop their junior talent well - we're looking to follow suit without paying silly money - with the bulk of our squad coming off contract over the next couple of years, a lot of these guys will be ready for FG and it's a squad that will grow into the future.

So we shouldn't expect to much for 2020 then re roster changes (Was obvious anyway). 2021 will be interesting as McQueen, Matulino and most likely ET will be gone. Bit of cash there. Plus Marshall will be gone and grub might even be gone by then. Not to mention Packer. God knows what's happening with that guy. Is he still alive?

Pretty much. Packer I'm pretty sure has had surgery on his foot/toe

Turf toe I heard - 12 month rehab

Like big Keefy a few years ago? I remember him not being able to overcome it and was out for ages! You wouldn’t think a little thing like a toe could cause so much drama when you think of some of the injuries players still take the field with, but let me tell you from experience, they bloody hurt!

@willow - Papenhuyzen is a prodigious talent which was obvious to the discerning supporter throughout his career. I'm ;glad you are not involved in talent identification and recruitment for the club. As for Suli, there is no template for maturity or player development. While he realised his talent at Manly, I have no doubt this could have been achieved at WTs.

Also add Nathan Brown as another local junior not recognised by the Club.

You are just embarrassing yourself now. He was selected in numerous junior rep sides (NSW Under Age, Aust Schoolboys, SG Ball Player of the Year) and his performances for the Storm confirm that talent. No hindsight whatsoever just appalling retention by the Club.

I'm not embarrassed in the slightest because he wasn't going to stay at the Tigers - he was injury prone and wanted a new start. Keep on blaming the club though, it's what you do.

For what it’s worth, we know the family well and he was ok with staying with the tigers......until Storm came calling - it was then all over, he was always going to leave and to be honest, who wouldn’t .

Thanks for the insight and I agree that it would've been an easy call for him - go and learn off Slater for a year or two or be stuck behind Tedesco for a decade...

The number of blokes picked in junior rep sides who have no or average NRL careers is astronomical. Even just pick a random year, say 2010:

Junior Kangaroos: Dane Gagai, Michael Oldfield, Justin O'Neill, Ben Jones, Josh Mansour, Corey Norman, Sam Williams, James Cunningham, Cameron King, Evrett Vaurasi, Mark Nicholls, Josh Jackson, Gerard Beale, Matthew Wright, Tariq Sims, Mark Appleton, Kyle O'Donnell - I count 6 of those blokes getting any regular NRL time in 2019? And almost none of the forwards made anything of it.

Junior Kiwis: Glen Fisiiahi, Bill Tupou, Siuatonga Likiliki, Dean Whare, Drury Low, Carlos Tuimivave, Shaun Johnson, Lama Tasi, Matt McIlwrick, Marty Taupau, Jason Taumololo, Mark Ioane, Sebastine Ikahihifo, Sam Mataora, Nafe Seluini, Sam Lousi, Isaac Maliota - probably an even worse conversion rate for the Kiwis, I count 4 legit NRL first graders.

Even - pick up Paps and his 2015 Australian Schoolboys - Paps, Tyrone Roberts-Davis, Curtis Scott, Reuben Garrick, Tre Williams, Nathan Cleary, Scott Drinkwater, Jye Challenor, Blayke Brailey, Jayden Butterfield, Cam Murray, Adam Keighran, Reuben Cotter, David Fauid, Ray Stone, Bayley Faull, Daniel Vasquez

Where are half those blokes now? More than half. Where are they?

Your comments end up being farcical paws. You sound off some 4 or 5 legitimate decent Tigers juniors now at other clubs, throw in a couple of other debatable names, then point fingers at retention. Totally forgetting, of course, that Tigers tried quite aggressively to keep most of those footballers and were outdone by money or power clubs or dodgy manager behaviour. Tedesco and Woods; it would be like criticising Monaco for not holding onto Mbappe or Everton for not managing to keep Wayne Rooney.

I can take any club you fancy, any single club in the whole comp and point out players that they let go who made careers elsewhere.

It seems to me your obsession with Paps has tipped you over the edge, where all recruitment and retention decisions are tarred with the same brush, because of the blonde-haired dodgy-mo midget running around in reserves for Melbourne.

It's a good pickup if we have got him, it's a pleasant surprise to see us looking outside of our local area to sign top talent.
