@jirskyr terrible examples for the Roosters and I can tell you that as 95% of friends and co-workers support them... they may have only ever regret RTS for that one season... potentially Maloney when they still were known to cellar-dwell occasionally pre-2014... the Storm players you have listed often either retired/took LESS money/were not nearly as good (Proctor/Blair and even Harris to an extent... Hoffman was actually our loss?) and still don’t think they regretted any of the players mentioned bar Koroibete who went to rugby... or maybe Craig Wing a lifetime ago... really poor examples when comparing their recruitment and retention to a struggling club like ours (which as a supporter of OUR club, you really have no scope for comparison)

Appreciate your attempt to illustrate how they may have ‘regretted’ some of these players NOT being able to stay with them, but to assume they made mistakes and did not act professionally in the way that we seem to butcher things at the end of every year with respect to recruitment and retention is just an absolute load of bollocks... how many of the Chooks players were actually Out and Out juniors in that area coming through that then subsequently left? Of course there would be no loyalty to a Sydney team if born in New Zealand. Wow I’m surprised I’ve had to leave this much detail but for you it’s like talking to a brick wall sometimes hey

Tigers biggest issue is a lack of off field leadership and good administration. You don't let Ivan Cleary sign players on inflated incomes well beyond the end of his own tenure. I know Cleary was contracted until the end of 2020 so they shouldn't have let him to sign players beyond the end of that term which still allowed for 3 year contracts instead of 4 for the likes of Packer, Mbye and Reynolds.

Spot on, we are a dumb club. The only time we had success was when a smart operator in Sheens was in charge. Thankfully we now have another coach like him.

@Masterton and also, as Tedesco was about to need his contract extended/the situation always seemed to be headed toward all three of the ‘Big 4’ tested their value on the open market... it was an ill informed and rushed decision to “not offer more than Storm” and was purely on the basis that we wanted Woods and Moses more at the time... then Cleary sacked Slimy off and SGT Woods showed his true colours.

Do you really support the club’s decision? Forget me taking a family member of yours hostage, that is totally vulgar. Nobody says we needed to act illegally or outbid the storm but to show some interest in our own junior star who actually did and still does (according to media reports) want to give back to our club it’s a no brainer. As somebody else put it, don’t bother comparing Roosters/Storm to us because they have actual professionals in charge of these matters and have for the last decade. It’s no joke mate lol

Hahahahaha well I’m not gonna pretend that wasn’t some quality banter for my Friday arvo... hopefully everybody’s In for a good weekend and some signing news shortly.

I always find it easiest to ignore people who continually hold the believe that your opinion/ things you have been presented as facts weighs less than their facts or is somehow less truthful...hence me not being so bothered by Russ’ query...

Maybe if his query was directed at the person who posted the above question or rumour relating to Paps originally people wouldn’t feel as if he is attacking a new poster. Leave me alone in future mate (you have no idea); some people get very touchy online.

Are you sure you have your facts straight? Because the bloke came out himself and said the Tigers offered him the same money as Melbourne did but he chose Melbourne as he thought Tedesco would stay and couldn’t see an opportunity to play NRL at the Tigers.

I’m not sure why you would tell a guy he is too small then offer him another contract? Or maybe he lied about it?

@Bones there is every possibility that I’ve been passed on second hand information that may be untruthful however I am not referring to recruitment and retention For the Paps decision, literally saying that when it came to Melbs throwing him the extra TPA’s and chance to be coached by Bellamy then he was always long odds to stay. He does have a total spiritual affinity for Concord and would love to come back... he wouldn’t lie about reserve coaches and even first grade players supposedly saying to him that he was a “pin” and would never have the required size to play quality first grade. My first post is simply to clear up the the misinformation regarding that, and that he will definitely be one player we’ll regret letting go (hopefully until he returns, that is all). Thanks for the respectful convo, love it !

@Bones just that we as a club made the wrong decision it seems to be a case in point of simply not being able to compete with what Melbourne were throwing ... but it was clearly reported he’d been told A) too small and B) Teddy was staying when we had no coach and no real direction as a club ... Pascoe at the very least coulda put some contingency plans in place

This whole “our retention is terrible” line is quite amusing.

What’s the average turnover rate in any modern organisation?

Let’s say ~20-30% in the <30 year old group. That’s 3-5 year average employment. For a football player that cultural driver suggests two to three clubs on average per player in their career

How many one club players are there in total now?

I’d be surprised if it’s more than 30%. That means more than 70% of players have moved clubs.

EVERY club has a big and painful list of loses. The cheating clubs have a smaller list but make no mistake they still lose lots of good talent.

It would be like a skin cancer debate where someone laments the fact the sun rises everyday.

Consistent development of non stars into stars is far more important. Surrounding the great players with a flow of Matterson examples is what will drive retention.

Retention is what happens when you get the inputs right. And even then we will still lose more than half.


I’m struggling to think of one player that the Roosters or the Storm have regretted losing over the years, who has gone onto better things at another club. They somehow seem to magically replace them with an even better player. We can’t do that, that’s the difference and why there is always such lament over our losses.

It’s an identical argument to Addo-Carr and people still talk about how he wasn’t quite a bone fide star here or that rankin had been holding his wing position - that is our stuff up as a club not the player’s or fans’

I don’t mind what anybody says about The big three and how they absolutely deserted us a club but Paps NEVER wanted to leave and obviously this has come from close friends... he seems a great guy and a Madge style of player that really we should’ve held onto at all costs (not one to cry over spilt milk) & so I see no reason why we wouldn’t swallow our pride and make a big play for him in the near future.

@Tigerboy fair enough. I just think it’s easy to say the club stuffed up, but at the time we were hoping to re-sign Teddy, Brooks, Woods and Moses. At that point most people thought at least Tedesco would stay.

The problem is if they had upped the offer to Paps it may have cost them one of the others. If we had retained Teddy as they expected we wouldn’t even be discussing it.

I’m with you that I hope he ends up back here because we could definitely use him at fullback.
