Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

@weststigerman Seriously we cant go close to paying $700-800k for a winger. International or not, its way overs under the current salary cap.

You can't measure a players worth by his position alone or you won't buy anyone who is a step above mediocre. Jason Taumolo is on a million a year doesn't mean all forwards are worth 1mill. If we want the best in any position you have to meet the market plus some. Whether the coach sees JAC worth it to our long-term success will determine how much he is prepared to pay, if anything at all.

So o is on what? 150 or something? Wing is one of the few positions you can get real value? At the moment, with a few bad contracts around we can’t afford him.

Also, consider why Melbourne chose him as the one they couldn’t find the cash for? Bet they have a cheap, capable, replacement lined up.

@Ponyo I think we are more than interested in Lomax.

We are for sure, but one of the people in the know on here recently posted that we probably won’t be able to get him until 2021 because St George won’t release him any earlier.

Will be interesting to see how the dust settles. From what I hear the Dragons are going to give him first shot at fullback next season. If he’s not going to be around in 2021 the dynamic may well change.

@bigsiro Whys is that ? I assume you want to pay 800k for a winger that has speed but not much else. . That's Fullback, Halves, Centre money but not for a winger.. Don't get me wrong I would love to have JAC in the team but would pay max 550k at this moment especially when we need a Fullback, Centre & some big forwards..

@Earl I'm not trying to justify the price tag but Packer may fire up this year I've got a feeling. Senior member of the pack now, hopefully he sees it as his duty to lead from the front. Couple signings, we're good.

I think we should forget about mitchell for a bit and focus on a world class second rower or prop, we need one to lead our young gun forwards such as garner, chee kam, aloai and twal

@balmain-boy Jennings on $400k? Show me that article. At that amount, Madge just dropped a few pegs in my book.

I am sure it is closer to $250k.

There were numerous reports at the time that he was seeking that and Souths wouldn't pay up. He was the leading try scorer the previous season, so 400k wasn't considered an unreasonable amount. Less than Nof and Marsters who we both paid overs for.

Feel free to google search those articles if you're so inclined.

@weststigerman it’s about what that positions value is . A half and a prop , are probably the 2 most expensive positions on the field . You pay a premium for them .
2nd row and fullback would be next , then dummy half , followed by winger , then centre .
The value of a decent winger has increased , but not that much .

@balmain-boy Im not inclined. Just never read anything to suggest he would be on anything near $400k especially when his signing was made in and around the time of Robbie's ambassadorial cap penalty.

Can I ask a serious question . How do people draw their evaluation figures eg. “I wouldn’t pay more than 500k for this person” ?
If 330k is league average (30 man roster , 9.9 mil cap ) , wouldn’t that be a reasonable starting point . Eg. Eisenhuth . I would say he’s an average to below average player . So to me his value would be 250-330k .
This gets more complicated however when you consider position value . Like , what portion of your salary cap do you allocate to each position .
So if average is 4% , would you allocate 5 % to Johnston .
I kind of think you would .

The cap is more complicated than most of us plebs can fathom. Lots of ins, lots of outs (As I quote the dude). A players worth doesn't depend on what a punter thinks he's worth, its what he attracts on the open market, which I'm sure clubs factor in lots of things when they make an offer.

Idk about you, but I think we could do with a world class fullback. Not many of those around.

$500K is max for a winger.

I wouldn't assume anything.
I'm just of the opinion that the modern winger does not get the recognition they deserve from the old school league fan.

A top winger gets a team on the front foot, breaks the line, has raw speed. Defuses bombs, makes great cover tackles and scores the speccies. They have more pressure on them than any forward!

Nowadays good wingers don't just park themselves at the end of the backline a'la 1975 or Rugby Union.

Some wingers are simply more valuable to their teams than fullbacks/centres. Take JAC; he is definitely more valuable than most fullbacks. Or take Corey Oates; he would certainly command more $ than any of our current forwards. And justifiably.
It's not necessarily about their position but the impact they have on the team and the game. And I feel that in the modern game, signing up top wingers should be a necessity rather than a luxury. It is simply outdated to still default to this old-school mentality that wingers aren't that valuable (or that they should be capped at $500k) "just because they are wingers".

Jennings this year showed that he did exactly that in 2018.

@GNR4LIFE
???
Jennings played centre didn't he?

Besides, I'm not talking about forking out for a washed up winger!
