How would the remainder of our Farah-Gate fine be handled this year, does it get carried over until next season or reduced??

Good Question..but that had already been accounted for this year as the NRL Grant is reduced to Clubs that get fined..they don't pay you then you pay them back..

From next year we have no fine...so we get the full amount..whatever it is to spend..

The Cap is also a nominal figure you have to spend if it was 9.4 Clubs fined can only spend 9.1..in the year the fine applies..

Thanks Geo can always count on you.

we could find ourselves in a good position when this all blows over since the player market will be crazy and we will have heaps of money in the cap to spend

I agree in one sense. I think the clubs with a high number of elite players on big contracts will find the going tough. Not all of those players will be happy to take a cut. Perhaps the clubs would be wise to cut all contracts in proportion to the cap reduction rather than painstakingly individual negotiations?

That's what I'd think would make sense. But how about the players at the lower end of the market, who are on the equivalent of minimum wage, and can't be paid lower.

Let's say in 2020 that $100k was the minimum wage, and $9.1m was the cap. That minimum wage player took up about 1.1% of the cap.
But now in 2021, let's say the cap is $4m, if you can't pay the minimum wage guys any lower, then that $100k is now worth 2.5% of the cap.

The guys at the top have to take a smaller percentage of the whole, they have to take a pay cut.

I would seriously target Ryan James! I know the poor bugger has had a rough run of injuries, but when he is on the park he pushes for SOO selection. Only for medium money and 3 years max

I would offer both Jack Bird and Ryan James small contracts and see if we get a nibble. I don't think either will get huge interest. By the end of 2020, both will have been out for close to 2 seasons now.

If we offer them low contracts and they take it, then great, if not nothing lost. But definitely not offering 400k plus. It was the same approach Sheens took when we couldn't sign anyone in 03, he went for talented guys who had been injured (EG - Prince, Hodgson, Richards). I wouldn't be paying much, buts its worth an enquiry.

Have a lie down mate, please. Both of those players are finished. There's no other way to put, theere's no other way to say it. They're finished.

Not really ...the Cap is going to be reduced ...a lot of the guys we have coming off contract are not on big money ..maybe Elijah and McQueen..so you still have to fill those spots plus re negotiate those contracted beyond 2021...

I'd say we are in not so good a position as we were before all this cap wise..

Good thing is all Clubs are in the same basket...

I heard Elijah was on 550k ? Is this true ? It makes sense if you think about when he signed the extension he was definitely sought after .
So theres a fair bit of coin there with McQueen on 400k plus.

Don't think that much..maybe 400-450K..but the point is those figures don't mean anything now because as had been widely reported the Salary Cap will definitely be reduced..all players will have to take less than they are currently on and signing new players will be for less as well..

Every Club has the same Cap..

Clubs that have a few Million dollar players will have to re negotiate their contracts as well..

What might work in some Clubs favour is if a big name player like Taumalolo or DCE aren't prepared to take less if they can get more elsewhere..

Teddy had to hand back his Mercedes today ...True !

Are you saying, given your scenario the elite players would have to take a proportionately larger cut? Possibly, it depends on how low the cap goes. I doubt it will be less than half? Anyway, we all know the cap amount is not necessarily equal to a players’ remuneration.

I get what you’re saying but the cap % is still freed up ie. 4-6% for both players (10% of existing cap is 980k) . Even if it’s a reduced rate , that should still give us around 10% of whatever the new cap is to play with .
That’s still a nice chunk to head into free agency with .

That's pretty much how I'd see it. Wouldn't be surprised if the RLPA came out with a recommendation of a sliding scale of % reductions to contracts except for the minimums which might remain the same?
Didn't the RLPA recently make a statement about contracts still remaining??

I know that the salary cap and NRL funding are both in the melting pot and therefore our club may not be able to to approach future recruitment with any level of confidence. But it seems that Rugby Union in this country is really in a bad spot and quite a few players may be looking at their playing options for next season. Our flanks need an overhaul and just saying!

No thanks.

Things may get interesting existing contract wise and payments- unless the contract in its fine print says amount paid comes out of general NRL salary cap amount per club, there is nothing to hook it back upon when the NRL clubs seek to reduce payments in line with reduced salary cap. Players would have to do it voluntarily, if not, and the clubs just reduce, even if RLPA approved, the individual player could still sue for their contract amount couldnt they?

I hope those greedy executives (including Todd) take a paycut also. Long term, I mean. Oh but then they wouldn't be comparable to other executives in other businesses, they may say? Well then hopefully they do the job because they love it and not because they are money hungry greedy mercenaries then.
