An off season getting rid of Jennings, Packer, Reynolds, Mbye, McQueen and Benji, that would be a winner

You left out Brooks?

Rather than advertise them as a package deal or a buy one get two free, why not ask them if they want say 70% of their contract figure to walk? They’re doing nothing for team morale by hanging around the joint, but encouraging others to watch half a game while getting paid big bucks.

Honestly I would have at least made ET a small offer. He's good for the squad and doesn't shy away from work at all.

Not that easy. The NRL are reducing the number of contracts down to 28 from 30. So it’s not only cap space that is a issue but also roster spots. It’s why they are letting Benji go. Things could change if Grub Packer and Moses M find a new home and we are only paying half or less of the freight.

Have seen nothing official from the NRL in that regard..

No nothing offical but it will happen, they have let a few leaks out there to soften the offical notice when it comes.

If I were the Tigers I would fill up 30 spots now and when it’s reduced just discard Packer and Reynolds

That’s the unknown, if there is going to be 28 players is there any possibility of cutting two players with no cap impact?
For example can we just pay out Packer and JRey, go our separate ways and have that payout sit outside the cap because whilst they’d have been in the top 30, they don’t make the top 28
Seems to me there’s a case to be made by a club management team worth it’s salt

In all likelihood it would be that the bottom 2 paid players would drop out of the squad.

Yeah maybe but what if they were two young guns you had on cheap deals, I doubt that $ alone can be the decider as even roster construction may come into it. Again, say those two were both halves
It will be interesting, I just think it’s an opportunity if we think of how we can make it work to our advantage

Yes when there was a 2nd tier Cap system..

That was replaced by Top 30 NRL squads..how Clubs balance those up to them..

This reduction in squad size wont cost Clubs 2 players in a sense that Rosters aren't full yet..

What it will do is hamper recruitment as less spots to fill..unless existing players can be moved but all Clubs would be in the same Canoe..

Another option would be to reduce minimum wage contracts leave it at 30 but the RLPA wouldn't go for that..

We were LUCKY to beat a poor Manly side at the death... I imagine you gave him 3 points.
FWIW- for the side's sake I hope the bloke finally shows something on a regular basis - but a half decent 15 minutes against Manly doesn't cut it.

I feel an overwhelming sense of relief at this news. I really think he is not that much ofa step up from Jennings and I think he would have come at a high cost both in $$ terms as well as lost opportunity.

It also jams up another roster spot at Souffs.

He is also the only player who hasn’t been fully benched. Madge punted Walters, Benji, Reynolds.

Unless he gets another half Brooks won’t be going anytime soon.

He shut down many dangerous situations with his defence. He set up two tries and looked dangerous with the ball. His kicking was good. Not much if a game really. Oh he was opposing a great game manager whatever that means?

FWIW- for the side's sake I hope the bloke finally shows something on a regular basis - but a half decent 15 minutes against Manly doesn't cut it.

He tackled a few people (his job), passed the ball in a backline movement (his job) and did one good kick that ended in a try (yay, good work).
If you consider running around not knowing what do as 'looking dangerous with the ball' that's fine.
Im happy to agree ...his best game for a while.

But this is a different situation in that the NRL are (potentially) changing the rules and revising squad numbers down, so I imagine there will be a degree of flexibility and clubs won't be forced to cut loose or increase the pay of players 29 and 30 if they don't want to. It's clearly not going to extend to dumping off the biggest albatross contracts that clubs are saddled with but I'd be surprised if it were completely rigid.

Consider also, that cutting players 29 and 30 may not put you under the new cap.
