The dogs won't be at the bottom for much longer. Barrett turned the Panthers into a point scoring juggernaut and Cleary into one of the premier halves in the game. With Hansen acting as a consultant above him they look more than likely to shoot up the table in the next few seasons. Gotta give them credit, they're doing everything they can to turn the place around. The dogs and even the titans are ahead of us because their big long term contracts have finished up 12 months before ours, but I do believe we will catch up by 2022.

I'm not saying this to criticise our own football department, we've headhunted Melbourne and Easts recruiters and poured plenty of money into our own backyard, and the COE will reflect that. Whether we like it or not we have only ever briefly had pulling power for players (2010-2012) and we've addressed this by signing some of the best young talent in the country as opposed to going all out for established stars like management has in the past. That's the way Melbourne do things. I do believe we're on the right track, it's just that we the old and weary fans will have to wait a little while longer until there is success of any kind, let alone sustained.

Is this the same Barrett who was an average coach at Manly?

The Manly attack clicked big time under Barrett. Both Trbojevic brothers and DCE were unreal under him. The problem was the defence was utter dross and he couldn't manage the big personalities at the club.

The 2017-2018 Wests Tigers and 2019 Panthers were some of the worst attacking sides I'd ever seen. Ivan Cleary has no clue how to coach offence. Barrett went to Penrith in 2020 and suddenly they were an attacking juggernaut.

Spot on

I think we should all just calm down a little .. I don't expect the Tigers to sign anyone of note for the next season, what Madge is doing is trying to prepare the Tigers for a season or 2 down the track. A lot of younger talent in our lower ranks and Madge is going after the junior super stars from other clubs.

A season or two of pain using the current old stock players and younger guys coming through, and then we will see a team full of youthful players with a reasonable amount of NRL experience ready to shine for the Tigers.

What's that old saying .. "no pain .. no gain .. !!" So we just have to take the pain for a season or two and then plan will work out .. I like another old time saying in .. "pain let's you know that you are still alive .. !!" So don't worry we (the Tigers) are still alive folks .. !! ;-)

Good move. He can try to squeeze a contract extension out of us blaming the performance on the terrible roster that he (sort of) inherited.

We seem to have a 12 year plan.

Lucky Gus isn’t in charge or it would turn out to be a 34 year plan

No big signings is a good thing for us. Trust me we won’t win anything if we continually recruit big money players. Keep at it sign young players with pedigree that want an opportunity. Build a club the kids want to stay at and play for. At some stage the investment in pathways will deliver the players we want at the right price.

Recruitment should only be to strengthen areas we are weaker at and or for experience or leadership to help the young players.

Melbourne haven't had a big signing since...Ryan Hoffman in 2012 - who was previously at their club, and only left due to the salary cap scandal. Before that, you have to go all the way back to 2006 where they signed Michael Crocker from the Roosters. Two big signings in the last 15 years.

Then you count the number of superstars that came from within their own system...Brandon Smith, Jesse & Kenny Bromwich, Nelson Asofa-Solomona, Cameron Munster, Christian Welch, Justin Olam, Tino Fa'asuamaleaui, Suliasi Vunivalu - all these guys are marquee players at other clubs. Just look at what Tohu Harris is doing at the Warriors. He is arguably the best second rower in the game right now.

They are simply an incredible club. The benchmark in the NRL. If you, as a club, want to be anywhere near their level, you need to be CREATING stars, not buying them. Buying simply moves talent around. Creating means you are adding to the game as a whole. The game would be poorer without Melbourne, just my opinion.

True. But it also helps considerably when the NRL foots the bill for your entire season.
Think it was around 5-6 million that the NRL forked out to pay for the Storms setup on the sunny coast.

This is exactly the answer . We are in Sydney , players will always want to go to the roosters ,and Souths . Because of politis , and Crowe and packer . The panthers built up through the juniors . We have to do the same . We can’t compete in a salary cap where , clubs can offer the same amount plus an apartment overlooking Bondi beach , under their moms name . Or 50k bets for the par 3 9th , where politis hits an 11 .

Problem is that we have lots of weak positions and little leadership. Strong recruitment is needed from the position we are in.

Just can't stop thinking we might land a gem if talk that Edene Gebbie comes our way.
He has that gift called pace, is an excitement machine and just might be that X factor we so badly need.

Only reason we missed out on him earlier in the season was because he went back to PNG. I assume it was covid-related and wanting to be with his family. I imagine we are in the box seat to sign him if he returns to Australia for the next season.

made the 8 more times than we did when he was there. yes he got sacked, but went back to Penrith as an assistant and plied his trade, and plenty of their players have said how big of an influence he was for them this year. do you not think he will improve this time round?

Came bottom 4 with a gun roster that Hasler turned into a premiership contender team

Made the Top 8 once in 3 seasons, win record 39.7%. Even Madge in two seasons at Tigers is winning more than this 40.9%. Mary McGregor just got the sack and he has a win record of 46.4%.

I agree with everything you have written. Our junior training, pathways and quality of coaching needs to improve. There has been a change of some coaching staff and a new pathways officer to be appointed. The COE will make a significant difference but we must match or better the Storm.

I think we should make a very attractive offer to Tedesco before Roosters resign him. Something along the lines of Latrells offer, 5 years or more. The fact the Roosters are looking at Suali should raise concern of Teddys long term future. Cant hurt?

I suggested this months ago and got shot down. Yet the same people who shot me down still think Harry will stay after he’s confirmed over and over that he’s going back to the Storm

With Tedesco, I’d withdraw the offer to JAC and off Teddy 1.5 million, a position on the board, stakes in the club, anything it took to bring him back. Won’t happen, but it doesn’t hurt to dream.

We will not get tedesco unfortunately I wish we could though.
Why can't we load up the big offer for Grant make it hard for him to take a melbourne offer.

because until smith retires there is nothing to offer for next year....and Grant has to say he is returning because he is obligated to.

But come nov 1 there is nothing to stop us loading up a contract for him for 2022....

Isn't he already contracted for 2022

I thought it was only for next year but had a clause to get a release if smith played on??

I could very well be mistaken....

He does have a clause, but just because it’s there doesn’t mean he’ll automatically activate it. The appeal of being apart of a premiership winning side probably negates Smith playing on.

I get it GNR4LIFE you don't rate Grant a SOO player and would be satisfied with Liddle and putting the money elsewhere

Now you're just making stuff up - i never saw anywhere that GNR doesn't rate Grant. what i have seen is the fact that he keeps saying Grant is contracted to Melbourne until the end of 2022 and he ( Grant ) has constantly said he is returning to Melbourne. Your obsession with Grant is way over the top.

I like that plan - i'm sure there are untried accountants, hairdressers and nail manicurists out there who are stuck behind the entrenched star of their firm and are just looking for an offer to get out.

Will keep on repeating this - I don't think people truly understand how good Grant is. If it helps the loss, call it over the top.

I am a huge fan of Liddle, and while people have been calling for us to cut him through all his injuries I've always wanted us to persist with him. He has shown he is a very good player whenever he has been on the field for us. Totally happy with him owning that jersey, and seeing what Simpkin can do.

But Grant is different class.

I hold no hope of him sticking with us at all, and do agree it's not a position we are in desperate need of - however I don't think it's a given he will be in Melbourne. Yes he has said it, but that's because his contract currently says that. I just can't see him and Brandon Smith playing 2nd fiddle to the GOAT Smith.

If Cam Smith plays on, and Grant truly enjoyed his time with us - another year loan doesn't sound farfetched to me.
