Storm circle Burton as NRL player market heats up
Adrian Proszenko
By Adrian Proszenko

Melbourne have emerged as a suitor for Matt Burton as the premiers look at contingency plans should halfback Jahrome Hughes take the money on offer from a rival club.

After months of inactivity, the NRL player market is set to come to life as teams seek to strengthen their squads for next season and beyond. Now that the November 1 transfer deadline has ticked over, players yet to confirm their homes for 2022 are open to offers. That includes a slew of stars with options in their favour for that season, including Kalyn Ponga, Mitchell Moses, Ryan Matterson, Felise Kaufusi, Kotoni Staggs, Paul Vaughan, Jake Turpin and Kodi Nikorima.

@NSWBlues winger Josh Addo-Carr has admitted he enjoyed the move to the right side of the field for the first Origin clash but with a loss now in the books a switch back to the left may be on the cards. #NRL

As revealed by The Sun-Herald last week, the Warriors are in the mix for the services of Hughes, whose stocks have risen since making a successful transition from fullback to halfback. Even before the Warriors had expressed an interest in the premiership-winning No.7, the Storm were keeping a close on eye Burton's future.

The Penrith playmaker is a man in demand, despite having made just six first-grade appearances. Stuck behind halves Nathan Cleary, Jarome Luai and Tyrone May, the Panthers have told Burton they will train him up as a centre for next season. It is likely to be one of several changes to the grand finalists' back line, given Josh Mansour has been told he will start the year in reserve grade.

Wests Tigers have also expressed an interest in Burton, who is off contract after 2021. The club is on the lookout for a halves partner for Luke Brooks now that Benji Marshall has moved on, although Penrith's biggest threat comes from Canterbury.

The Bulldogs have a two-year deal on the table, which would be extended to a third season if the Panthers are prepared to release him immediately. Should Burton sign with a rival club for 2022, it could prompt Penrith to grant him an early release.

The Tigers are still sweating on a decision from Josh Addo-Carr. The Storm star has signed a heads of agreement to join the joint venture for four years, although that remains contingent on Melbourne granting him an early release from his contract. The NSW winger is keen to move to Sydney for family reasons, but may have to delay the shift for a further 12 months.

"All that stuff off-field, my manager is doing all the work," Addo-Carr said. "I'm not too fussed."

Addo-Carr is one of several notable talents who slipped through the Tigers' fingers in recent years, a list that includes Ryan Papenhuyzen, Nathan Brown, James Tedesco, Aaron Woods, Andrew Fifita, Curtis Sironen and Moses. They could be about to lose another one, given rival clubs are circling Alex Seyfarth. The Tigers had all but agreed to terms on the first season of a new two-year extension, but the Knights, Sharks or even Penrith could be options after negotiations stalled.

South Sydney could become a player in the transfer market after freeing up about $1 million in salary cap space for 2021. James Roberts has been released and Corey Allan has been permitted to look elsewhere, with the Broncos shaping as a potential destination for the latter.

However, the Rabbitohs aren't prepared to budge on Joseph Suaalii, who has requested a release to join arch-rivals the Roosters. The in-demand teen is expected to sign a long-term deal with the tricolours, which include exit clauses in the players' favour, from 2022.

Suaalii is on a $60,000 contract with Souths for 2021, which the club will enforce, even though it is resigned to the fact he doesn't want to play for them. The Rabbitohs will write off the money just to ensure he can't defect early to the Roosters.

I wonder if Panther supporters are going to hold a rally?

Honestly, this just makes the way Farah reacted to his tap on the shoulder even more shameful and embarrassing.

They tapped the wrong player too Edwards is bog average hopefully this is his undoing and he gets the karma he deserves.

C’mon, 48 hrs after losing a GF? Ivan books a table for 3 at a restaurant Called Abattoir Blues. Has he no emotional intelligence?

If Mansour could tell from the text it wasn’t good, why not just text back and ask, or better yet, call Ivan. Sleeping on it and waiting till they met in person was just dumb.

I'd be surprised if Seyfarth left. Must either feel his progress is blocked (not that he'd get time at Cronulla) or is being offered a seriously low deal. He's a junior who we've fast-tracked and his style of play would seem to suit Maguire perfectly. He's really young for his position so the best is yet to come but he seems like he'll make his career off effort more than power or skill.

I’m just guessing but it would probably be about money I reckon. Don’t see him getting offered much more than a minimum wage contract here at the moment, maybe a slight upgrade if we don’t get JAC.

The same was being said about McIntyre that the deal was delayed due to money but seems like that got sorted out

Yeah probs. He won't get a run at Penrith and dunno about the Knights either. Squad filler at this stage.

Thank you. I’m glad someone else sees it. Heard him get praised numerous times throughout the season for being able to catch the ball on the full. Put him in another team last season and you wouldn’t hear a word of him

Different personalities are different with how they deal with these situations. I think it was more professional of him to have the face to face meeting any way. Probably kept Ivan up all night worrying to lol so that's a positive

Hastings is keen on a return to Sydney. Surely we go hard for this bloke. Best player in the Super League imo

That doesn't mean too much.

Saw him a few times this year - nothing too much out of the ordinary.

I know what you mean. Jack Wighton won a Dally M at 6, but gets overlooked for that 6 jumper twice for the blues.

Its all political always has been always will be .

Well that was a big mistake and i really hope Fittler loses this series, most commentators don't really know how to coach maybe except Gus but he is also old school as well now and more an administrator. They are also all one eyed when it comes to there teams and the should be a rule where if there team is playing they don't commentate.

Only respectful commentator is sterling and Fatty for some good entertaining comments sometimes.

Won the Man of Steel in 2019 and lead Salford to a Grand Final which they lost to St. Helens, joined Wigan this year and has played a major role in them winning the minor premiership. Not sure what you mean by “that doesn’t mean too much”

I'm not a fan of the Super League being a good guide to who will do well in the NRL. Our very own Brett Hodgson went from struggling here in 2008 to winning the Man of Steel in 2009.

George Williams has been a revelation at Canberra, and no one really rated him, Canberra have bought some gems from the ESL

I know, Canberra were a club like us that struggled with consistency on the field and couldn’t attract the top players. They went to the ESL, found the solution and have been a top 4 team for the past 2 years.

Instead of continuing to struggle with lesser name players and waiting for juniors to realise their potential, I honestly don’t know why we aren’t looking there also. Especially since Madge would most likely still have some connections over there.

Quite a bit of news / rumours here.

Burton, JAC, Seyfarth - that appears related to WT

Alex Seyfarth unsure if he is worth retaining personally thought Madge was giving him a run to access and never made it back again at the end of the season.

Can't understand why we would be chasing Burton thought we were going to Put AD at 5/8, depending on JAC.
Still don;t think AD is quick enough for Fullback but i have liked what i have seen in 2020.

Good Point however we have to have some cap money to spend. think we have always better a better Club with 1 English player from the Super league. (Gareth Ellis was a good signing and Ellery Hanley)
