Can someone tell me the average years a player has in first grade? I know they all want to win a premiership, but why wait on the bench behind other players when you can get more $ elswhere? If you can get an extra $100,000 at another club ,go for it.YOU may only have a few years at the top, make hay while the sun shines.Forget loyalty it won,t pay your biils.League is a business ,clubs will drop you if you do not perform.

A few years ago I remember the average NRL career was around 30 games. Not sure what it is now.

This posting goes back to 2016 from the ABC.

Since 1959 :-

*36% of players have played fewer than 10 first-grade games.

*56.8 % played less than 30 top-grade games.

*82.2% per cent played less than 100.

*The average career is 49 first-grade games and 4.2 years.

Out of every single player who has spent most of their youth pursuing a dream, those that actually go on to making a proper living out of the game is minimal.

Please also consider these stats :-

* Players out of the game after a year (depending on injuries, suspensions etc): 65%

* Out of the game after two years: 75%

* Out of the game after five years: 88%

The reality is that Kids who aspire to become first grade footballers more often than not, do not realize that failure is a high possibility. The assumption that players go on to have long careers and make heaps of money is entirely false!

Out of the 20-25 or so kids that come through each year, aspiring to be first grade players, usually two or three of the 20 players might go on to play first grade. Of those that play first grade, only 20 per cent have a career longer than four years. Of those, probably half make a good living out of the game.

Many years ago on the ABC they were talking to Bennett, Sheens and Warren Ryan and talking about the above and all three said the returns on outstanding juniors was like winning lotto. They said sometimes your forced down that road, but if you want instant success you have to buy players who are proven and played over 100 games

Yes it's a real balancing act for Clubs, Coaches and Players.
So i don't begrudge any player seeking an upgrade on there contract but you also have too see how much the club has also invested in you for another club to pay more.

Maybe they should change it so that half the upgrade amount goes back to the club that way the managers also get less as well, if the player wants to break a contract early.

Agreed, but not when you have a current contract.

That's a thought... Does anyone know, seen, or heard what are the running costs (less contract) for NRL club to put into a player on a daily basis? For example; food, transport, physio and accomodation etc!!

I have always hated souffs more than easts.souffs and parra have always been my most disliked teams in Sydney

Both of these clubs are very easy to dislike.

Whoever gets storm coaching job beware.Bellamy had 3 of the best players for a long time. All will be gone in2022.Plus 2 of the best forwards in the game are getting long in the tooth. They will always have a good side but without Smith maybe a 10% less so.Munster great but plays hard and is injury prone.Top management moving on is ominous..Think they were lucky easts lost key players and burnt out or i doubt they win the comp.

Yes Raiders are my second team after WT.

What is a "second team"?

Our September team, as we hang onto the NRL season.
