Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Really we need this for 2021

Laurie swap for Cini
Sironen swap for Garner
Scott Sorosen signed up

Leave money in 2022 for positions we really need.

Just a theory here on the Brandon Smith "release", feel free to give your thoughts or correct me if I've got any of it wrong

Both Brandon Smith & Harry Grant are signed to end 2022

Only Harry has a clause allowing him to leave if Cam Smith plays on

To me this signals Cam is playing on and they want Harry to replace him longer term. By telling Brandon he can look at offers it is saying to Harry, you are our next hooker, just sit tight Cam will play one more and it's yours because Brandon is leaving

They have also said Brandon will be with them for 2021 but 2022 he may be free to go, depending on various things. Even that feels like an insurance policy in case Harry jumps ship once Cam announces

Like I say just a theory but if there is anything in it hopefully we are close to Harry and his manager and also speaking about what we could pay over a 3-4 year deal, remembering he would be on relatively low dollars for 2021 & 2022 at the Storm

That the Titans haven't been mentioned as a destination for Brandon Smith is telling.

Due you believe Brandon Smith's manager is trawling for the most $ to go back to the Storm to negotiate a new deal?

Seems strange that they would not contact GC - maybe they had been a bit sneaky and already had an offer on the table even though he is signed until end of 2022.

Maybe or, they already have someone.

They let Peats go and only have Mitch Rein on their books as far as i can see - don't know if they have any younger guys coming through. Its their real weakness.

C Smith?

Ah yes forgot about him - there was talk about a move to GC - but that just disappeared. Very interesting. Geez they will be a force if he went there.

Cam was rumoured as a possibility and also because he was setting up home on the Gold Coast, but also there have been strong rumours that Mal wants Harry back home.
My money is on Cam to have one more season with Storm and coach Titans in 22 , where he will have Harry as his 9.

Whilst I can see that happening, salary cap wise I don’t know how it works, they have 2.2million tied up in 2 players already

Maybe Melbourne knows whats going on between the 2 Smiths and Grant. Obviously the rest of us don't. They will be in a real hole if they lose all 3 and Bellamy over the next 2 years. I can't see them letting B Smith go if there are doubts about Grant staying on. I wouldn't be surprised if Cam goes to GC and Grant has been told he is the number 9 next year which has got the Cheese upset and asking for a release.

Also, Smith made it clear that he could not play under another coach (even though he has experienced that during rep games).

I am aware of that however the cheese has been released from 2022, not 2021. It would be stupid for Storm to release him in 2022 knowing Cam and Harry won't be around.
They obviously have a new deal sorted for Harry whether he has to wait one more year or not for Cam to leave.

Replacing Reynolds with Widdop is a very sideways move, they’re virtually the same player, injury issues at the back end of their careers. The only difference is Widdop is cheaper

Totally different players. Widdop has a running, passing and kicking game, which Reynolds doesn't.

Both are pretty average. It’s no upgrade really, it’s just cheaper which is fine. Widdop can play round 1 then sit in reserves all year

Absolutely, and that would be the plan. I don't think anyone would be expecting him to play first grade unless there's an injury. I've been really impressed with Hartigan, if he thinks he's ok for a year I have no issue with it.

He has the benefit of being able to cover fullback and 5/8 which is something Reynolds couldn’t do

Signing Widdop probably means we won’t get Laurie early though

You forgot to mention that Widdop also has one great attribute which nobody in our first grade team has - He is very reliable goalkicker which is extremely important due to the close games we are likely to encounter in 2021.

We can revisit this next season when the team are being beaten by 2 and 4 points as the kicking situation was not fixed!
A premium kicker puts you right amongst the finals contenders this is FACT always has been !

What news did I miss on Harry Grant? Pretty sure Storm will lock up the big 3 mk2. Munster, Grant, Paps, gun combo. Unless I missed some article =p

I’m not considering an element of stupidity. Lol. We know the 3 owners are hands on and haven’t made too many mistakes, but we also know how tight fisted they are when it comes to releasing players from their contractual obligations. I’m not sure Brandon has a “Cam get out clause “ like Harry does?

Lots of chat on here about how Reynolds money should be spent. Seems glaringly obvious to me that Tigers area of most need is the backrow. Every team that has won a premiership in the last decade has had at least 1 or 2 established representative backrowers in their starting lineup. I 'am of the view you can't win a premiership without a gun backrow. Might be a reason Tigers have been rubbish since Ellis left.

Tend to agree tbh. Tigers need to add a strike backrower who can offer above average results on both sides of the ball. Lucy seems to fill one spot well however someone like Kikau, Angus.C, Frizell etc would be awesome. If only we could sign Ellis from 2010 all over again.

Does anyone have any ideas on what the recent signings are on?

Tamou 2021-22 $350k per season? any option? club/player
James Roberts 2021-22 $200k per season? any option? club/player
Joe O 2021-23 $500k per season (Broncs pay $200k in 2021 & 2022?) any option? club/player

Also on Josh Reynolds, I'm assuming he was on $750k for 2021 but that we will pay $250k leaving an additional $500k onto our cap

Assuming that was all correct (which I know it won't be) I have us with cap space of $1.375m with 3 spots open

Welcome any info anyone might have to help these estimates

No info on the numbers but if you are in the ballpark 1.6m actually represents 1.9m in cap as 2 months of the season have already been paid.
If you were to sign 3 players on 633k p.a. It would fit under the cap. Creating space within a season can get you good players for 2021 but also without cap room moving forward it means they can be kept long term. Given we only have a few spots we either sign rep level players and or kids and upgrade existing contracts .

2005 ring a bell???
We had O’niell, Galea, Fulton and Hienington.
All good backrowers but non were representative.
