'Life's not all about money': Benji Marshall opens up on future
By Zachary Gates

Legendary playmaker Benji Marshall has spoken for the first time since knocking back a monster pay deal with Super League club Hull FC, declaring "life's not all about money". Hopes of Marshall's illustrious NRL career ending on a fairytale note at Wests Tigers were dashed when coach Michael Maguire in August told him he wouldn't be offered a contract for 2021.

And while the 2005 premiership hero was reportedly in talks to join the North Queensland Cowboys on a $150,000 contract, and later Hull on a blockbuster $722,000 deal, neither agreement eventuated. Marshall said he had opted to prioritise family over money. "Life's not all about money and when I thought about the pros and cons, the pros were just about the money," Marshall told Triple M. "If it was about the money I probably would've retired five years ago. "

Good luck Benji your not missed and its not about the $.
Culture is already looking better at WT without having a sook around the team.

When you think Wests Tigers, you think Benji Marshall and vice versa it’s as simple as that... and I don’t see that changing anytime soon

Yes he’s not the player he once was, but that doesn’t mean we should disrespect the greatest player in the clubs history whom had put this team on the map leading us to our first and only premiership, more so respect his decision to wanna play on and wish him all the best and cherish the memories he had once demonstrated at this team and give him the respect he deserves and allow him to do whatever he wishes as we owe him that at the very least wouldn’t you think, I don’t understand why everyone’s so bothered about him believing in himself that he can play another season, it has no barring on us whatsoever if he plays on somewhere else to try further his legacy that’s fine, for all he has done for this club we should support a club legends aspirations not put him down....

I’m not upset we didn’t re-sign benji, I personally think it was the correct decision in terms of this club moving forward however I do think he deserves to be respected and appreciated for the things he has done for this great club, and should be able to make whatever decision he thinks is right for himself and be supported by us fans

Think what you like its your choice, we all have our own thoughts, second time round one things why ask him to come back he never developed any players it was all about him.

I wished him all the best, he was a sook that's not being disrespectful just stating the facts on how he left.

I think you will find he has rubbed a lot of long term supporters the wrong way not only how he left this time but also the prior time as well. Maybe you don't recall history but he was one of the main instigators in having Sheens removed then the following season did not see out his contract and went to play rugby union.

**Herald Sun - 18/07/2013**

BENJI Marshall has walked out on the Wests Tigers _ but wants a return to the club in coming years.

Marshall posted a four minute video on the club's website today revealing why he made the contentious decision to quit.

"It's been a hard time for myself and my family but as you all know I have made my decision to move on from the club at the end of this year. It was probably the hardest decision I have had to make," Marshall said.

"I feel like I have done everything in the game at this club, including winning a premiership, representing my country, captaining my country, winning a Four Nations, winning a World Cup and winning the Golden Boot. Without (the fans) support, a lot of that couldn't have been achieved.

"I feel like I am the person I am today based upon what I have done at this club. At the end of the day, my decision was based on what was best for myself and my family. Not only that but what was best for the club also.

"I know some people won't be happy but some will be happy to see me go. That's life, rugby league is a game and the club is bigger than me.

"I will honour my words about not playing for another (NRL) club. There is no other NRL club for me to play for. The Tigers are my home and will always be my home.

"I have seen guys like Mark O'Neill leave, go to England and then come back to the club. I am hoping to do the same in some capacity after I retire, maybe be involved with the club. Hopefully get back into it somewhere."

Marshall said he was not angry at the club.

"There is no hard feeling between myself or the club," he said.

"A the end of they day they did what they thought they could in the (salary) cap to keep me but this decision goes far further beyond than money.

"If it was in the past I could have take more money to go elsewhere. I feel like I have given my life to the club. Eleven years is a long time. I will never forget the years I had here."

Well he did not play for another club but more than one, was given a lifeline to come back, Madge selected him also to play for NZ after 7 years being exiled.

Lastly 2005 was not all about Marshall there is no i in Team.
Agree Marshall will be remembered for being a great player for the Tigers but he will also now be remembered for being someone that wanted to play on too long as should have retired back in 2018.

Say what you like about him does not take away from the fact
he is the greatest player to have played for west’s tigers

Tedesco says hi

I'd take prime Benji 2005-2011 over Teddy now

I wouldn't. Outside of 2005 Benji was incredibly inconsistent most of those years, often overplaying his hand or suffering a defensive lapse.
Tedesco is the complete package. At nine years younger than Benji he has already achieved more in the game.

Benji was brilliant at times, and we nursed him through numerous shoulder operations and had to cover for him in defence all his games. For solid commitment Farah and Woods for me.Tedddy in attack was the best.

Id like a gun lock in the Jake T mold or Todd Payton. Great ball skills, can cover hooker if our options don't work out, since we have two maybes and no definite for full year. Also Danie Laurie may be good, isn't really proven. Seems wild not to entertain other fullback options

After weeks of fending off rivals targeting their own talent, the Penrith Panthers have bolstered their backline stocks.

Penrith have bolstered their backline stocks by signing former Parramatta utility Jaeman Salmon on a one-year deal.

Salmon, 21, was left clubless after the Eels did not offer him a new contract when his three-year deal expired at the end of last season.

After debuting for the Eels in 2018, the talented centre/five-eighth only managed 17 NRL games over three seasons, and didn’t play a minute in 2020.

**Maybe they might release D LAURIE**

With Salmon being a 6, I’d say there is more chance that Burton could be released given this purchase. Although I think Panthers will ultimately keep them both.

I would totally agree. Although I do concede that Tedesco is more consistent and probably a player who is suited to the position he is in. Benji changed league. Tedesco will be remembered as a very good fullback. Benji, he will be remembered as an icon, watching what he did on the field was sometimes beautiful. It's not that Benji won us games, it's that he made the games the most entertaining games I have ever seen.

The Dragoooons are no longer interested in securing the services of Broncos Matt Lodge .. and Bulldogs are hopefully of securing the services of Corey Paix from the Broncos for the 2021 season. Wow i like the Dogs bottomless bucket of money .. !!

I got this funny feeling that Lodge has career ending knee problem and a lot of teams are aware of it .. !!

Benji without doubt was/is the most entertaining player we've ever had, but not the greatest. Out of modern day FBs, Teddy has surpassed Minicello and is approaching Lockyer/Slater status. Its harder for some WT supporters to accept his level of greatness because he made a deal with the devil.

Do you think we ( Fans) would look back on Benji as fondly if 2005 didn't happen? I had a mate who once told me I only rate Benji because of the GF win and and I didn't have that I wouldn't gloss over the many, many reasons to not like his playing style.

'Life's not all about money': Benji Marshall opens up on future

Tedesco is the better player. He doesn't have the top end Benji had but he is more consistent. The problem is if you don't like Benji as a person Tedesco is heaps worse. He reminds me of a spoiled brat. I bet he was and is a spoiled brat.

Consistency. The death of the modern game. Tedesco is a great player, benji is too. Benji changed the game, like slater. Tedesco won’t ever change the game, won’t let you down though.

If Tom T stayed fit he is a better player than Tedesco. Only reason he player out of position in rep football is because he can. Tedesco can’t play outside fullback

Who knows what the answer is. Two completely different players. I will say this about the comparison though, Teddy may have achieved more, but he went to a club at the top to do it. Had Benji left WT after 2005 and played behind a decent forward pack at a side like Storms he may well have been a multiple premiership winner too. Something none of us will ever know.

Why are we still rehashing Benji, he's gone and with the backline we now have, simply doesn't seem fit style wise into the 2021 team. If that seems harsh, think remember 2013 when Benji scampered, it works both ways.
The club should be focusing on getting young Laurie here a year early, that kid could be something special in our number one jumper. AD did a reliable job, but 6 or 7 is his niche, safe hands, good defence great football IQ and integrity perfect for a future leader of our team.

Do you think we ( Fans) would look back on Benji as fondly if 2005 didn't happen? I had a mate who once told me I only rate Benji because of the GF win and and I didn't have that I wouldn't gloss over the many, many reasons to not like his playing style.

No, your mate has a point. Benji is a freak who created a lot of great plays that only he could pull of but he also made a lot of poor choices by taking low percentage plays that would look good on a highlights package, e.g. flick passes to no one or over the sideline, kicking out on the full/not finding touch, not closing out games defensively.
Sorry to derail thread, last comment I will make in this thread about Benji however it's a no from me in offering a 2021 contact.

Probably, but we did win that game, and that became one of the best nights of my whole life. And Benji was part of it.

Teddy is the better player in that he's more consistent, and up the top (probably) for longer, but Benji was a generational player who had an impact on the game like no other I have ever seen in thirty plus years of watching footy.

May be the wrong spot.. but personally I believe the season went down hill after this game.. I was 10 drinks deep screaming at the TV and I thought we had it..

Few good things of this game, Shawn Blore Debuting and belting Nathan Brown and also Packer running over Matto.

Bad things other than us losing are, 2:50.. is that Josh Alioia letting RCG run straight through? Useless glad he’s gone.. secondly, Mitch Moses Kick and chase.. but honestly I loved it as a footy fan because YOU NEVER see the small kick over the head for yourself anymore.. not to mention Josh Alioa also standing there while he does it at 4:18.. atleast Douhie gets back..

Okay 5:20, Moses Mbye is absolutely useless as a captain..

Also Cheekam highlights in there too.. THAT but not Blore smashing Brown..

A few examples of Aloiai poor defence in that clip. also at 3:24

Best player Benji?..The big Pom was our best ever player. Granted Ellis was only here for a few years, but he was in a class of his own. Had skill, brutal in defence and every week against good teams and bad teams you got the same performance. Absolute champion on and off the field

Aint that the truth. Ive never seen a defender stop players one on one as easily as he did. Just monstered them. Damn wish we had him for a few more years.
