Movements at the [Broncos](https://www.news.com.au/sport/nrl/broncos-making-moves-with-andrew-mccullough-exit-kotoni-staggs-battle/news-story/7d4f19dc9154ad0e3f64e4f51ecf7616) may have ramifications for us. McCullough to StGilly, they are looking to free up just $300K in doing so. In order to do that you need to sign someone on a low salary to replace him. Walters fits the bill. Isaako would free up some more obviously.

IMO we should bid hard on Staggs. Not to get him but to try to tie Broncos up in knots for the next few years. I can see Broncos out of the 8 for a while.

Teams are apparently willing to bid $800k a season for Staggs. He's good but that's crazy money for a centre who can't defend and has done his ACL.

Staggs is a decent player but if he wants 800k i wouldnt even make an offer

But what is even scarier is that the Tit .. ans are prepared to pay that and even more for him and that's after they have already purchased David Fifita, Tino Fa'asuamaleaui, Herman Eseese, Patrick Herbert and Sam McIntrye .. and from all reports they will be getting Cam Smith as well .. so how hell could they afford to grab Staggs at $800+K .. !! Have they acquired the Rorters finance officer to do their books .. !!

With o ur luck we would get him for 950k - great move.

What is reported as Staggs contract worth may not have any bearing on what clubs will pay.Again managers and media love to play this game.No doubt the Tigers would have an interest in him and others such as Crichton , but we have been burnt before, and i doubt if Hartigan would make any rush decisions ,and i doubt anything over $750,000 would be considered.

Can someone post the Ivan Cleary article in the SMH about a trade window.
Ivan Cleary calls for trade windows to fix NRL’s ‘messy’ contracting system

Penrith coach Ivan Cleary has advocated for the introduction of trade windows to better regulate the player market, believing the existing free-for-all system is “messy” and creates confusion for players and fans.

The NRL season kicks off in a month and the lead-up has been dominated by speculation about the future of a number of players, despite the fact most are contracted for 2021. The Panthers have been in the spotlight following release requests from Daine Laurie and Matt Burton, two talented players who will struggle to make Cleary’s top 17 when his entire squad is fit.

Laurie was eventually released to Wests Tigers in a player swap that saw Penrith get Paul Momirovski in return, while Canterbury’s attempts to prise Burton out of Penrith a year early – he signed with the Bulldogs from 2022 – have so far been denied.

Another Panther, Josh Mansour, opted to join South Sydney after being informed he wouldn’t be one of the side’s first-choice wingers.

There has also been conjecture all summer about the futures of off-contract stars Jarome Luai, Stephen Crichton and Isaah Yeo, although the club will be in a position to trumpet their retention well before the season starts.

Cleary believes trade windows would provide the game with a commercial opportunity, while also eliminating much of the innuendo that surrounds player movement in a free-market system.

“I just think we can do it better than how we’re doing it at the moment,” Cleary told the Herald.

“I worry about where it’s going to head. Other sports do it and it seems to be successful for them. It creates interest, it creates media, there are plenty of ways how you could package it up.

“Fans can get really involved in the process; it’s like fantasy league, that creates fan interaction and that’s what they are into.

“[Contract] values could be more accurate, recruitment processes would be better and more accurate. It feels like it could be better.

“I don’t have the whole answer, I haven’t looked at it that much, but it’s a bit messy at the moment.”

The Panthers are under no obligation to release Burton, who will provide much-needed depth should first-choice halves Nathan Cleary and Luai be unavailable due to injury or representative commitments. Burton was told from the outset that he wouldn’t be released early and Canterbury haven’t been able to change Penrith’s stance despite offering up at least four different players at various stages in a bid to tempt the Panthers into a swap deal.

The situation is an unnecessary and potentially avoidable distraction for a side attempting to go one better after last year’s grand final appearance. Cleary believes there is a better way.

“You get a lot of situations where guys are confused: ‘Am I going or am I staying? Am I on the market or am I not?’” Cleary said.

“That’s one thing we have tried to do, to be nice and upfront about everything. There’s nothing worse than going out playing and then you pick up the paper and you’re getting shopped.

“The easy thing to say is you wouldn’t be able to police it properly. They used to say that about the salary cap, but they got a lot better at doing that.”

Cleary believes two to three windows a season would give players a smooth transition to a new club if they were struggnrtih Panthers.ling to break into the NRL at their current one.

“You’re probably going to get some teething problems in the first couple [of windows], so it’s important to not just say it doesn’t work and dump it,” he said. “It’s the sort of thing that would become better over time.”

Obviously a coach under pressure with player movement distractions. I can’t see how 3 windows of doing the same thing will make a difference?

Penrith are in a similar situation we found ourselves in after 2005. Lots of distractions and defections leading in to the following year which completely destabilized our season. I can see similar problems for Penrith if they don't get their young guns signed soon.

Tamou named Wests Tigers captain for 2021 NRL season

Adam Pengilly
February 12, 2021 — 8.00am

He is yet to play for the NRL club, but James Tamou has been appointed captain of the Wests Tigers.

The former Penrith skipper, who led Ivan Cleary’s side to the decider amid a record-breaking 17-game winning run last year, has won the nod from coach Michael Maguire to lead the joint venture in 2021.

Maguire told his squad on Thursday night at the end of a week-long camp at Tamworth.

Tamou will take over from Moses Mbye, who relinquished the captaincy as he tries to find a permanent home at fullback.

Mbye won’t be part of a five-man leadership group at the Tigers this year with Maguire expected to name three local juniors in Adam Doueihi, Luke Brooks and David Nofoaluma alongside Alex Twal, who will all help fill the void when Tamou is off the field.

Nofoaluma rejected huge offers from NRL rivals over summer commit to the Tigers beyond 2021.

Maguire’s move is a massive show of faith in 32-year-old Tamou, who only signed a two-year deal to join the Tigers on the eve of last year’s finals series.

The enforcer was a huge factor in Penrith’s success last year, but the club struggled to find salary cap space to extend his stay at the foot of the mountains. Panthers coach Ivan Cleary has appointed son Nathan and Isaah Yeo as co-captains this season.

Provided he avoids any serious injuries, Tamou is on track to notch 300 NRL games before he finishes his contract at Concord.

The prop has already played for both his state and country and has an NRL title on his resume with North Queensland in 2015.

Tamou is one of a number of experienced Tigers recruits, including Brisbane prop Joe Ofahengaue and South Sydney speedster James Roberts.

Young guns Stefano Utoikamanu and Daine Laurie have also joined the joint venture, the latter finishing just his first week of pre-season with the club after being part of a player swap with Paul Momirovski.

Tamou’s first competition game in charge of the Tigers will be a trip to Canberra to take on the Raiders on March 14.

More to come

Agreed except we won and they bottled it. Enormous pressure on them this year. Especially as it’s up to Ivan to evolve the attack now the mastermind has gone to Canterbury.

Reading the article, one thing really stands out "Mbye wont be part of the leadership group this year"....
At a guess I would say he is going elsewhere after this season....good luck to him,I hope he ends his career well, albeit elsewhere...

Wow, that sucks, sounds like he was going to get his move to the sharks this year before this. At least he got his contract.

Imagine the meltdown that would have happened here if we were the ones who signed him last week.

Hindsight's a hell of a thing, shattered for McInnes but it's a massive stroke of luck we didn't pick him up.
