Tigers reckon PNG prospect Gebbie worth the wait

NRL clubs often go to great lengths to recruit players, but based on the extraordinary time and effort put in by the Tigers to sign Edene Gebbie, there must be something special about the Papuan. Looking forward to eventually seeing this bloke

Isn’t this the guy who spat the dummy and left south’s with out telling them cause he couldn’t get a run in first grade

I don't think so? He went home to PNG because of COVID.

Fair enough just that I was reading him and douehi were supposed to fight out who gets the fullback job but then they signed latrel Mitchell so he spat the dummy and left

Great perseverance by Hartigan to obtain Gebbie's signature. WTs should send a plane load of jerseys and other WTs' merchandise to Port Moresby, Mt Hagen, Lae as our profile is about to rise in PNG. Let's hope he is the first of many PNG nationals at WTs.

Probably one of the best ideas/comments i have seen on here.PNG is the only country in the world where Rugby League is the dominant and national sport.Developing a bond between WT and PNG should be beneficial to both parties

And 'national sport' doesn't even give it justice, it is more like a religion!
There's a lot of untapped potential there. People forget how big PNG is, it is double the population of New Zealand.

Yep , that’s what I think . Also Ennis has a bee in his bonnet over the fact we didn’t play Reynolds and got rid him .

I dont rate Ennis at all to the point where I dont watch a single Fox program with him in it.

Reynolds isnt our problem anymore.

Can't stand his head, looks like Buzz light year. 10 on the plodder scale for wrongness of head

I just watched that clip.

Ben Ikin - the guy is so dumb but thinks he is smart because he wears glasses. Absolute goose.

Asking who will be our spine - pretty obvious Ben. Way to do your research.

Yep. Flog

Happy to give Gebby a go, but its starting to get tricky where all these guys can play. I guess thats the whole point of a 30man squad and its good to have depth and options.

If he works out, I guess I can see it placing pressure on BJ with a club option coming up.

Gotta love our depth and quality as well. No one in top 17 is safe which can only be good.

Fun facts:

In 2018 Gebbie was named the PNG Hunters' rookie of the year.

In 21 games in 2019 for the Hunters he scored 19 tries, recorded 21 line breaks and 162 tackle breaks. He also averaged 208 running metres.

That year he was selected to represent PNG in the Kumuls side. I'm yet to see a Kumuls player who is not as tough as nails.

In 2020 he played for the well named Lae Tigers. If not for the covid situation I have no doubt Souths would have held on to him.

Injuries always play a BIG part in any teams season this year we appear to have plenty of cover should that eventuate we basically have a youthful side with some very experienced players around them.I don't think this year players will be selected to fill a hole Madge will select on form and form only

Thanks for the link. Daley thinks we'll make the 8. He's obviously done his research and given it some thought, especially compared to Ikin.

I’m watching the NRL 360 opener and the grubs think Tigers will be bottom 4 this year.

Ben Ikin bagged us out completely and says crap like “they don’t know who’s playing in what position, the 6 and 7 is undecided”

Jesus.. he doesn’t know crap.

It doesn't really matter what the journos think. If we start consistently winning, they will shut up and start talking us up as if they knew we were a chance all along. Talks cheap these days. Ikin is so deluded that he probably thinks the broncos will make the GF this year

Precisely the reason I don't bother watching opinion-based television on Fox/Kayo.

In order to support a dedicated channel, Fox has to generate a lot more content than they used to. And because the sum total of footy news is typically fixed on any given day, they have to make up the shortfall with opinions - opinions are cheap and you can manufacture them ad nauseum. What's worse with Fox is they carry the torch for the News Ltd's sensationalism approach to journalism, where you don't just report a story, you massage it until you find an edge that may provoke controversy and therefore prolong the life of the debate. It's Fox News 101.

So on any given day of the week I don't care at all what Ben Ikin thinks, on any topic. Nor do I care what Slothfield thinks, or James Pooper or that smug bloke - Paul Kent - or basically any of their regular guests. I have no reason to be upset about what they say, because I don't care and it has zero impact on what actually happens on a football field.

At the very least Fox could afford to be analytical, but they mostly don't bother because that costs time and money and effort. I'd watch analytical commentary. I'll listen to Brandy Alexander's opinions any day because he breaks down the rationale behind what he is saying and he doesn't push a particular party line - he doesn't even save Penrith from criticism.

Which is where I will give nrl.com time and credit, because almost all the opinion pieces they publish are analytical and tend not to be sensationalist. E.g. I don't particularly have much time for Seibold as an NRL personality (at least not yet), but I'll watch the material he has been putting up on nrl.com because it's analytical - he includes examples, explains the implications of what he is showing you, he refers it back to his (recent) experience as a head coach under modern NRL conditions.

What do those mugs know anyway, it's not as if Ben Ikin is a renowned punter or weekly tipper?

Daley seem to think we would make the 8 but said if we get injuries we would struggle cause our depth wasn’t as strong as other clubs

NRL360 is literally the Daily Telerag in TV format. You couldn’t pay me to watch it.

Whilst I agree it's trash, you might be able to pay me to watch it. Depends how much you paid. Imagine if you could make a living or greatly supplement your living just by watching Fox Sports?

Gebbie has all the tools, it just comes down to time and effort. I think he's a far easier project than Fitzgibbon in terms of learning the game.

The trouble is Ikin thinks his thoughts and opinions are relevant,

unfortunately for him they are not and neither is that idiot Ennis.

You see, the story is that Fox keep Anasta, Hodges, Meninga etc.
to try and make Ikin and Ennis seem like they know somrthing.

However people with half a brain know that they are all dopes -
maybe with the exception of Alexander.

Ikin was a below average player at best .. just because he married Wayne Bennets daughter thinks he knows everything .. pffft

Ennis .. a thug, a pig, a grub is all Ennis remembered for .. !!

Two wannabeis is all those two will ever be .. !!

So much has changed in just a few months. Looking at the players off contract for 2022, and i can't see many that would improve our squad. Players like Jake Friend would have got our keen interest, as well as many others, but we have such a strong forward pack now ,i don't see a vacancy. Our backs have some doubts about them, time will tell, and we have some quality in CC. Who do the forum members think is worth chasing that will be off contract ?

The Roosters half Volkham was sensational in the first trial. Looks like Keary, Williams and Lam are ahead of him. They can't keep them all.

Sam Walker would also be ahead of him on a depth chart. I think Roosters will move on from Lam this year.

I don't necessarily agree with that. Mbye will be one of the best Mr fixits in the spine. We've got props out the wazoo. The only area is 2nd row.

Yeah I disagree too, I think our depth is actually quite good 2021. Depth being a measurement of the ability to replace players with backups who are close in ability.

You look at the Roosters - once they lose a couple of top-tier footballers, it's a huge gulf to the backups. Not as bad as Manly, but if Tedesco or Keary goes down then everything changes for them. In 2020 Roosters were still a good side, but losing Radley/Verrills and having to rely more heavily on Flanagan meant they couldn't go to that next level. Drew Hutchison is not going to win you a premiership.

The issue is actually that our top-tier players aren't so far in front of our backups. There should be a greater gulf for our best players, and there isn't, because we lack elite-level, or at least peak-form, footballers. This is evidenced by the fact that Tamou and Joffa have waltzed into our starting FR, our starting centres have been at the club a single season combined, and our probable long-term first-choice FB has played just two trials for us. The prominent second tier / bench players 2021 are almost entirely new recruits or debutants.

Based on previous season performances as a team..The recruitment was totally needed..
