J Reynolds MOTM in his debut super league match...could be a handy pick up

This is the exact reason why a Hastings signing doesn’t excite me.

Well that's a weak reason to be frank, already discussed, for two points:

#1 Man Of Steel has often been a very capable footballer - Hodgson, Pat Richards, Ellery Hanley, Gary Schofield, Sculthorpe, Andy Farrell, James Graham, Jamie Peacock etc.

#2 J Rey was MOM 1 match. Not yet the same as being best player in the entire comp a whole year.

I hear you but I don't think its a weak reason at all and i didn't say he wont be successful here, it just doesn't excite me and i am not as confident that a key role like a 7 will translate and be as successful.

However, if it was discussed did we consider the following to your examples, both Hodgson and Richards had already won a premiership in the NRL before going over there so i am not surprised the won the award. Hanley won the award 3 times before coming to Australia to play on the wing.

Schofield, sculthorpe, farrell and peacock while winners of the award and good footballers never played in the NRL and while we can speculate that they may have worked out, there is no evidence to say the would definitely work.

Sam Tomkins also won the award and came to the NRL however, that didn't work out to well for the warriors.

So while there has been discussions i don't think its conclusive that just because you win the Man of Steel in the UK that your going to be a success in the NRL, hence the reason why i'm not sure Hastings will be a step up for us.

IMO you could argue that should Brooks go to the UK, he may very well win a Man of Steel.

Nobody said Hastings would be a success in NRL because of MoS. You made a comment that because J Rey could be MotM in his first game, that is "the exact reason" why a Hastings signing doesn't excite you.

I simply pointed out that many MoS winners are very successful footballers by any measure (so it's not an indictment against the player), and winning MoTM in one game isn't really comparable to being the season's best player.

Also
George Williams
Elliott Whitehead
Sam Burgess and the other Burgeii
Gareth Widdop
Gareth Ellis
John Bateman
Adrian Morley
Josh Hodgson

Not a single MoS winner amongst them.

Adrian Vowles, Rangi Chase

I am sure you guys get the point and i think Hartigan and Madge are thinking along the same lines. The new rules are lending themselves towards a solid defending lock who’s maybe a little smaller and quicker who can use a step and speed in the middle when the big guys are getting fatigued. Just as Watson did to us, or a guy like B Smith can do. Maybe Jake Simpkin playing some minutes in that role could be an interesting experiment!! I’d have him in the 14.

Oh god, now a 90kg 19yo is going to play lock for us

As a LOCK? God no. What the hell gives ANY indication that a 90kg 19yo hooker who has NEVER played 1st grade, would cut it as an NRL Lock? Seriously?

I think we have the solution for lock at the club already.... Stefano. He's shown he can hit a hole, he's shown he's got a big motor and he's shown he's got good passing.... he could end up at 13 eventually once he's got more games under his belt I reckon.

I think the lock under these current rules are best suited to guys like Murray, Radley, Jake T more mobile smaller forwards with some decent ball skills and ability to play 80 if required

Everyone references Murray and Radley but that's two blokes out of 16 teams.... everyone else runs props who can pass as their locks including the premiers. If we could find that type of lock then go for it but clearly they're pretty hard to find and we will need to settle for a big man up the middle.

Depends how long these dumb new rules stay around. As long as your lock can play good minutes and has good passing I don't think you're at a big disadvantage. Souths have Murray as their attacking forward but their second rowers don't really break a game open, we are kinda the opposite where Garner and Luc can score and set up tries

I was surprised Bulldogs offered Dylan Napa early for Matt Burton.

If I was a coach, I'd accept this deal.

I do see packer leaving if Panthers have a injury in their forward pack.

My good friend gets bulldogs intel. Apparently panthers wanted Napa as a swap for burton but with bulldogs paying the majority of his wages. Bulldogs said no, hoping all the noise in the media would force the panthers to succumb. They forgot Ivan has no morals or integrity and is king of hypocrisy. After Burton’s man of the match performance and with Napa doing nothing this year. The bulldogs had a change of heart and Ivan said no sorry we going to keep him.

I think J Turbo is the benchmark (prior to this year anyway)

I know it was only against us but seriously Connor Watson is the perfect example of how a modern day lock will probably look moving forward

Almost single handedly won Newy the game.

Saw the stats yday and scratched my head at how we won. The errors and surprisingly, our kicking game are what saved us.

Everyone keeps banging on about the knights errors yet forgets we bombed about 3-4 tries ourselves

I can only remember the Mbye one? Which was a sitter and should have shut the gate.

I should have corrected myself to try scoring opportunities*

Early on when AJ kicked for a settler on 3rd tackle with 4 players in support

The obvious Mbye one

There was another that Gould pointed out, early in the game, AD kicks in goal when all he had to do was draw and pass and Liddle was through a yawning gap

All good, I knew what you meant :+1:

Yeah right the AJ one. Watched the Kayo coverage so didn't see Gould's point. Pretty happy with the effort from our forwards. Good to think that Blore is coming back too.

It depends what structure your team has, if your halfback plays in the middle 3rd and can get the ball out to the edges you may as well put your best defending middle forward at lock. If your halves mostly stay on their own side of the field, a ballplaying lock to get the ball to them can be very useful.

The Tigers biggest weakness is defence, lock is currently being used to improve that.
