I think our current team would benefit greatly from a scheming, fleet footed lock that is also a strong defender. A guy who could share some of the playmaking role to add variety and deception to bolster our point of attack. I thought Watson did a great job for the knights, but a brandon Smith type would be perfect for us. I think Maguire is looking at hastings for this role - not to replace Brooks but to add to the team.

Ex Steelers lock Ian Russell is the kind of lock we need. I'd say he'd have, size, skill, defence and pace. over Hastngs.

Not familiar with the guy you mention, also not sure if Hastings is the right guy for the role I’m describing. I do believe in the idea though and would love us to get a competitor like B Smith for that position.

Ian Russell recruited from Mittagong, a talented country product. Dean Schiffilti from Nth Qld could also play.

I think that may be a little old now..

Skill doesn't age and suggestions of Hastings anywhere near WTs?

Let's get Ron Coote then..

I believe the discussion was ball playing locks who could steer a team around the park. Russell is an excellent example.

I was surprised Bulldogs offered Dylan Napa early for Matt Burton.

If I was a coach, I'd accept this deal.

I do see packer leaving if Panthers have a injury in their forward pack.

And that's why you're not a coach.

No one would accept this deal. A bench forward on huge money or a young star on minimum wage

Well, Burton is going next year regardless, who from the bulldogs would you switch for Burton plus cash? Or would you leave it all together.

Saw the stats yday and scratched my head at how we won. The errors and surprisingly, our kicking game are what saved us.

Everyone keeps banging on about the knights errors yet forgets we bombed about 3-4 tries ourselves

And quite a few were forced errors.

Even when we win, we don’t win according to some people, it’s the other team losing it

Mostly the case on here speed2burn.

Not just on the forum either, notice how most of the teams we beat last year had their coaches sacked. Losing to WT is not a great career move.

Most of the teams everyone beat last year had their coaches sacked, mate. It's not as if the Broncos board called Seibold in and said "we don't care about the spoon, but losing to the Tigers was just unacceptable".

Surely tuki offers more on bench then any player on the current bench does baring Stefano

I would give tuki a go on the bench
If he can do what Stefano has done in his short time with us then our bench would be one of the strongest in the comp
I was a little disappointed with Musgrove on the weekend but 1st game back so will give a little leniency
Ofahengaue also needs to produce more meters
Musgrove needs more tackles
Our team needs to share the load of work to be more efficient and effective

On the weekend
D. Klemmer 197 meters 37 tackles
D. Saifiti 162 meters 27tackles

2 man Total 359 meters 64 tackles

J. Tamou 76meters 26 tackles
Z. Musgrove 97meters 8 tackles
J. Ofahengaue 59meters 20 tackles
T. Mikaele 32meters 14 tackles

Our 4 man total 264 meters 68 tackles
I would expect more from our big 4

I know I left Stefano out who was our best but he is also our most inexperienced

Either show complete stats or nothing.

Klemmer played 72 mins, most of our props played 30-40. So of course he made more total metres. Our backs also take 3/5 hitups per set so forwards only get two between them usually.

This is pretty basic stuff here people.

I did think about the time on the field but this chart doesn't show it
By the way
Why don't you add up all the minutes played by our guys and compare against the two Newcastle boys
Surely the 4 Tigers mentioned in total played as many minutes
Yet our meters are still way down
Maybe we had better field position?
Our guys had fresh legs yet we couldn't inflict the damage we should have
And if our forwards did more work for the time they are on then our backs would be fresher ?

So 2 guys from Newcastle killed our 4 main guys in meters and tackles combined but you and 10 others are happy with that

Newcastle's bench added nothing at all. Literally nothing. Everything came from the starters. So yes their stats are padded based on their team's reliance on those two individuals.

Conversely we had 6 props out there who shared the workload. You could have swapped Mikaele with Stefano and get a slightly different picture.

We also relied on our backs to work off the line, they had better field position and could use their forwards in the middle of the field.

You're also looking at two Origin forwards compared to our no-frills pack, these two would out perform many props.

Connor Watson came off the bench and almost single handedly sparked thier attack. They looked dangerous when he came on.

Hastings would be a bit small for a lock in the current Tigers team imo. Although admittedly, I haven't seen his defense in recent years.
I'd be looking at Laclan Lewis for that role. Hastings would still be a good get though for spine backup.

Connor Watson is under-rated, he's a good player and gotten better over the past couple of years.

I am sure you guys get the point and i think Hartigan and Madge are thinking along the same lines. The new rules are lending themselves towards a solid defending lock who’s maybe a little smaller and quicker who can use a step and speed in the middle when the big guys are getting fatigued. Just as Watson did to us, or a guy like B Smith can do. Maybe Jake Simpkin playing some minutes in that role could be an interesting experiment!! I’d have him in the 14.

Panthers can sign Packer
Bulldogs can pay the contract
Panthers release Burton to the dogs
And Tigers come out on top

Watson is smaller than Hastings.
Watson listed at 5’10” and 88kg
Hastings listed at 6’ and 95kg

That would be a huge improvement for the game by bringing back the traditional lock forward but with ball playing talent. It would remove some of the play making responsibilities from the halves.

For those not old enough to have enjoyed the play of a genuine ball playing lock, enjoy the Paul Langmack clip in Magpie colours.

What do people think of Matt Ikavalu as a wing suggestion? Unlike Naden he’s a pure winger, off contract this year and would cost less. I’ve only seen him in one or two matches but he played well.

I wish we could clone a young Halatau. Would have been perfect for today’s lock.

I've watched him play more and he's not that great. Short and slow, he's okay but think we could do better.

Langers was a classic ball playing lock, he would be good for us if he was 30 years younger
