Niel Henry, coaches a great style that has become more relevant in todays game than ever before, NRL experience (Raiders, Cowboys & Titans) assistant coach to the Maroons since 2008, current coach of the Junior Roos, Nrl coaching consultant, not a bad bloody resume.
I wanted him to coach us ahead of Madge, I thought I was right then, now I'm 110% he should have been our coach. The bloke just doesn't talk about culture and accountability, he is regarded as the best tactical mind in the NRL, hasn't won a premiership but is a two time NRL coach of the year and most importantly appears to be a damn good human.
Henry had a massive fall out with the players at Titans and also struggled to get their attack going. He'd be a good assistant for sure, not sure he would handle head coach
Was all due to Hayne from memory? He had them travelling pretty well and then they signed Hayne (who he didn’t want) and it caused issues. Henry is a very good coach when rebuilding.
I remember that well. One huge negative ego caused a team that had been travelling OK at the time to spiral. A stint in Her Majesty's may be reducing Hayne's opinion of himself.
Henry is a very underrated coach IMO, especially with clubs undergoing a rebuild. He got NQ into a position where they won a GF a couple of years after he left, and had the Titans heading in the right direction until the Hayne debacle which wasn’t his fault. Then Brennan made every mistake imaginable. I think the year before they played finals in a squad that wasn’t great.
I think Madge is quite similar to be honest.
Henry has more experience in rebuilds than Madge though I’d give him that.
What I would say is the job Madge walked into at Souths was a unity and enchancing role. Souths jnrs have always had a strong depth of talent. Up until Madge started at souths 2/3s of that team would of been local junior (I’m assuming, happy to be corrected), but this is my take on where Souths were and what they had at their disposal.
So the talent was available already within the greater squad. Madge spoke at length prior to starting up with us about how he put a lot of focus into ensuring that Souths not only becoming a contender in the years he was coach but also have a strong pathways in place to ensure continued success.
In the ‘struggling’ years at Souths they recruited Walker, developed Johnson, Murray and Campbell-Graham
Here at the Tigers, none of that was set up.
Someone mentioned Taylor last tried to establish that and I’m not sure why that wasn’t followed through with the club when Cleary arrived but only Mikalee ‘our last Keebra survivor’ remained as a talented junior we would hope to keep with Seyfarth a couple of years behind.
We lost our best ones in Paseka, Papenhuyzen, Tatola and for whatever reason Suli never prospered here. Players like Cassell Stone, Connelly Leiumu weren’t rated here and we focused on the wrong players in JJ Felise and Esan Marsters.
The place was a mess. Maybe the club should of been honest in the first place and admitted to a rebuild being required and grabbed either Brown or Henry prior to Madge.
Still, I wouldn’t be at all opposed to poaching Henry as our Defensive coach.
Last time we had really sound defence was when the late Steve Folkes was appointed to that position.
