While the Storm have not discussed terms, Smith’s desire to play as a starting NRL hooker may force him to leave Melbourne, even though he is currently wearing the No.9 jumper with Grant coming off the bench.
“That is part of the problem,” Martin said.
“And that is the reason we put him on the market originally. We don’t know how they are going to play him at Melbourne and that is fair enough because they have Harry Grant.”
Such a smart bloody club.
It’s an each way bet for them.
There first offer is higher than usual, probably higher that they paid Finucane last year but it’s still manageable if they decide to keep him sure he is probably worth that, but that is not ‘unders’ at Melbourne. He has been offered a fair rate knowing full well they won’t have the capacity to play him at Dummy half and want to use him at lock.
What this does do however Is starts the bidding at that price point for all the other clubs.
Roosters won’t be picking him up for any less than $600k and then the building clubs, Bulldogs, Titans, us would be expected to pay upwards of $900k just to get a look in.
Well played Melbourne!
Nobody was getting him for any less than $600K anyway...
