How do we only have 4 spots left for next year that's scary
The fact we’re likely keeping Cini and Roberts is the club waiving the white flag in terms of recruitment
They have to say no to cini and amone.
Amone and Mikaele are the same. Bog average.
Both those players have shown signs they could develop into keepers. imo.
Waiting for some of our players to make a contribution is like leaving the porch light on for Harold Holt.
It is. The alternative is just as painful.
I hope we stop signing players over the age of 27 unless they’re already at the club.
Does anyone know who is responsible for the club’s contractual obligations with new players? Who is ultimately responsible for signing a new player?
As I understand it, Hartigan (after discussion with Madge) put forward a proposal to Pascoe and the board for sign off?
I seem to remember that that was a bit of an issue, because of some lag time in getting the green light?
Pretty sure this was brought about because of Ivan?
So the experts get approval from the pen pushers.
Surprised?
Just like the process most organisations use for major expenditure items which may have implications for further developments.
What you going to have the Coach to make the decision on his own? Way to disaster.
Comparing football with commerce is getting us places.
It seems logical that Hartigan would have the responsibility of identifying and hiring in collaboration with Madge. I’m curious now, at what stage of the process would the board be made aware of Hartigan’s intentions? And what is the scope of the boards involvement, other than monitoring expenditures?
Let’s deal with an actual example?
Hartigan, Maguire and Pascoe travel to QLD, presumably to show interest in TPJ.
What happened after that?
Why did the chair need to make a public announcement stating WT did not make an offer? Was he acting on board instructions?
Why then, did media reports indicate that we were back in the race? After we were advised of a divided club over this contract proposal?
The point is, if responsibilities are grey and/or being usurped, how can any of us accurately rate an individual performance?
It's a point, but really no one is doing a bid like that by themselves.
Yes we can't ask McGuire why we did not sign TPJ without asking Pascoe and Hartigan.
Ultimately it comes down to motivation. If I was TPJ and I got offered "have a premiership ring with Penrith then join the Dogs for 3 years with Burton and the Fox" I am a little excited. VS sign up with the Tigers, play with Joe O and Tamou...
I cannot see us, getting TPJ's signature when the Dogs make an offer like that. It is one clever move.
So what do we do?
IMHO, players like to play with friends. Sign people in similar playing groups. Engage in a similar mentality to Fortress Manly. Wests Tigers did this before and we did not realise it.
Chris Heighington, Fulton, Keith Galloway did not move around very much till Chris H left the tigers. We had a solid stable pack for a long time (problems, yes but stability). You add Ellis and Payten you realise how formidable that pack was.
Then you add Juniors like Fifita and Woods and we go to the top 4.
When Chris Heighington left, the fortress mentality was broken. People like playing with their friends and you can negotiate a salary accordingly. Sure some will be poached with stupid offers, but they have to make overs to get them away.
^the Big 4 destroyed that mentality. We should have realized that Mitch Moses did not want to play here no matter who his uncle was. Then the pushing out of Farah, Marshall, etc.
Now what, we became mercenary made good signings and wow were 13th.
I don't know how we make a group like what we had. How we form a group of forwards that like to play with each other and keep some stability in the back line. I do know we have to STOP with single year plans.
Forget about the 8.
Focus on team development and defense. Get the right players, the right leadership and the right coaches to bring the most out of them. But accept a 3 year plan and front end the cap accordingly. Yes I am talking 2024.
