The biggest recruitment and retention failure we have had revolves around a lack of on field leadership.

We lost Benji Marshall, Chris Lawrence and Elijah Taylor in quick succession.

Other players we had looked at for leadership like Packer, Mautalino, Musgrave,McQueen, Thompson and a couple of others did not work out for one reason or another.

These players were never replaced. All we got was a washed up James Tahmou.

It has been an epic failure to understand what we had lost and do very little to replace it. Imo its the main reason we are where we are right now. A laughing stock!

Regardless of who coaches this mess not much will change without some on field leadership. For that reason we need at least 3 good quality on field leaders.More if we can release some contracted players who arent shaping up.

Hastings and Doueihi are what i would call on field leaders but we need to add to that.

Tariqu Sims is a must.

Luke Thompson and John Bateman would also help if we could fluke one of them.

The cupboard is pretty bare, we have left it too late to identify the problem.

Hopefully a couple more senior players are set to be shopped around, we sure as hell need them.

That's the part I'm most disappointed in Maguire. His decision to let the likes of Corey Thompson and Elijah Taylor go, and fill their spots with players perhaps more athletic but miss the experience, football IQ, and work ethic.

By 2021 we had an unbalanced roster of overpaid non-performers and promising young players with no NRL experience. We solved the fullback problem and hooker was "less" of a problem than previous years (still not solved), but we lost footy smarts and players who worked hard and led by example.

We now have massive gaps in centre, lock andprobably wing. We also have a halfback who needs to move on but has 2 years to go on a big contract.

To be fair Maguire is cutting dead wood from previous coaches purchasing.
Yeah sure he signed Tamou and Roberts but he brought big stef over, signed Blore and Laurie.
And has been restricted by big money contracts for players he didn’t sign.
He’s only now(that packer and Mbye are gone)got the team he’s ready to work with, to mould and shape the kind of unit he wants.
Be honest with yourself, it was never going to happen overnight.
Penrith said 8 years ago a five year plan, look at them now.

sacking another coach and starting the whole process again is absolutely the wrong decision.
This system of blaming than coaches and expecting instant results is bloody stupid.
Give Madge the 2 more years he’s contracted, if it gets worse than so be it.
But it won’t get better having a new coach with new coaching staff burning a season getting to know players and attitudes and

Its obvious that no player here in the NRL wants to come to us .. we have to look else where .. we have to do what Canberra did and look at England and players looking to try their hand in the NRL .. sure with Sheens on deck .. Hastings and Gildart as bait .. in trying to get other English players to us ..!!

I'm with Ben Elias (for once) that Sheens has to be appointed head coach .. does that mean we get rid of Madge and take a hit with paying him out .. ??

Probably, but if Madge is the reason other players do not want to come here, then it will be worth it. There has to be a reason why the players we targeted did not want to join our club. I do suspect their not wanting to be coached by Madge was part of this. Why - like everything else on here, a lot of rumours and also what I have seen...players were over him at Souths, including a champion player like Glen Stewart, Matterson stated he did not like him as a coach, the body language of our current players who look like they have lost all confidence, his press conferences where he looks like he has no answers, his ranting, swearing cliche 'rev ups' where it looks like the players have switched off. If the players do love him and are fully behind him, as suggested by Tamou and Leiluia, despite what we see on the field - a dispirited team without soul, then great, keep him for 2022.

The fact we’re likely keeping Cini and Roberts is the club waiving the white flag in terms of recruitment

They have to say no to cini and amone.

Amone and Mikaele are the same. Bog average.


Both those players have shown signs they could develop into keepers. imo.

Waiting for some of our players to make a contribution is like leaving the porch light on for Harold Holt.


It is. The alternative is just as painful.
I hope we stop signing players over the age of 27 unless they’re already at the club.
Does anyone know who is responsible for the club’s contractual obligations with new players? Who is ultimately responsible for signing a new player?

Worked for Cronulla with Ennis and Lewis. Just because we got burned by bad decisions once doesnt mean we have to quit making good decisions.

WT would kill for a duo like Ennis and Lewis right now. 2 competitive beasts who would certainly drive their teammates on and lead the way in every single aspect. Gallen and Wade Graham as well. It was no surprise those 4 were involved in their maiden premiership, they are all exceptional leaders. (Not withstanding that they were almost certainly operating outside the salary cap that year also).

Desire and pride. That’s what they bring. Hard men who say “how high coach”

I wonder if Roberts (on small money) is also staying around because of the influence he has over our Indigenous players. He is always in the photos with Laurie (and Fitzgibbon) and if we are looking at signing more Indigenous players he would be a good respected elder player to have in the group (no matter what you think of his current form).
