Players available?

The expansion team is not good news for our recruitment or retention

I disagree. If we were the Broncos, Roosters, Eels, or Storm I'd be concerned, realistically we don't have as many desirable players off contract next year so I can't see us getting picked apart as much. We need to just be very careful in locking up the right juniors and development players though. There's already 15 clubs keeping an eye on our roster, one more won't push us over the edge.

Stefano will likely be a target the following year however it won't just be the second Brisbane team he will be the target of.

It will effect all teams because it will put upwards pressure on prices for better than average players. There’s not enough first graders to go around essentially. Struggling teams will need to pay even more overs to get or hold the solid players. It’s not just the year they enter the comp. It will be indefinite.

Not to mention it’s another team to beat to get into the 8 lol.

But they will have the same cap as the rest, won’t they? Only the elites will see bigger $’s imo.

We really need lomax in the centres

Lomax should be our number 1 signing objective.

Don’t think this will happen

Once upon a time James Roberts would have been the centre of interest !!!!!

It could be worse . They could have brought in an expansion draft , in which every team loses at least 1 player out of they’re top 30 , and only allow protections on 10 of them . That’s what happens in other countries / sports to give the new boys a chance at a competitive team .
But the lure of Brisbane , especially if it’s Redcliffe , and living in the northern suburbs or even at a pinch the Sunshine Coast , might be too much .
Honestly if it’s the western suburbs of Brisbane , I think they’re going to have the same recruitment issues we have , with the Titans and broncos being far more desirable .
Like I said if it’s the dolphins then , the whole NRL should be looking over thier shoulders not just us.

Of course I have no idea how it will turn out but I disagree.

There’s not that many elites in the comp relatively speaking. Squads aren’t filled with elites. Also the salary cap (and minimum wage) ensures a limit how much you can spend on 1 or 2 players

We could also have different opinions on what we consider elite vs above average. In which case I could be agreeing with you. For example I don’t consider suli elite but he’s going to paid a lot at the dragons.

Who does everyone think would be 1-2 'gamechanger' recruits for us this off-season? Gamechanger as in have the potential to alter the course of our future through leadership, x-factor, culture etc. Have to realistic too, either off contract or has been murmurings that they could be released/exchanged.

I've mentioned 2 in a previous post ... ZAC LOMAX & JOSH HODGSON.

Lomax - we need a good centre offensively & defensively, great goalkicker, can play fullback as well, hasn't yet reached his ceiling.

Hodgson - tough as nails, will help sure up our middle, experienced, provides leadership, mentor for our young hookers in Simpkin, Rua, Tannous, Anjoul etc, has that bit of mongrel about him which we need, I feel he'd combine well with Hastings/Douehi. The offset to this is Liddle being released.

I will be very disappointed.

Mate! - you and me both.

I don't think we need a person with his history at a club that is trying to bring on a lot of youngsters.

In fact he should not be part of the NRL. A very despicable human being, if he is one.

Hodgson is past his used by date imo. And Liddle isn’t being moved on. Some need to accept that.

Past his best yes but can offer something for 2 seasons we lack. Remember what happened after we recruited Scott Sattler. I'm looking for similar impact for a young squad.

That’s the same for every other club. We are actually one of the clubs with the least to lose. Melbourne, and the other Queensland clubs will be impacted more by this.

Its worse for us because we can't recruit anyone decent as it is. It will only make it harder.

Sattler was very influential he was a guy everyone wanted to play with , set an example on & off the field, probs before most of u can remember but back in the early 80’s we were whipping boys but under cranky Stanton the culture & performance improved .He elevated young guns Roach, Elias ,Hemsley ,Pearce ,Kain &Jack with the experience of Pringle ,Corowa and Knight , reminds me of what Madge is doing now with this group

One of the reasons why building the squad from junior grades up and keeping these guys together so that they develop strong bonds and spirit to play at the club, is a good way to go. The players in such a group don’t want to leave and ate harder to tempt.

The only current NRL player I see that could be of similar impact is Josh Jackson. But he is signed up at the bulldogs to end of 23 on 600k a season. Pretty fair price.
However young Jackson Topine who reminds me of a young Cam Murray is off contract 22. Local Junior to the Dogs though so might be hard to pry away.

Stefano will likely be a target the following year however it won't just be the second Brisbane team he will be the target of.

That’s what we thought about Matterson and Aloiai. It doesn’t take much to get out of a contract these days, especially if you play for the Tigers. We always fold.

It will definitely hurt recruitment. New Brisbane team coached by Bennett with a full salary cap… ouch.

That’s why I don’t get why there have been posts claiming the club needs to extend Stefano ASAP. Even if they extend him for 5 years, there is nothing to stop him wanting out after one year. And given this club’s recent history, it will roll over….As long as they are financially compensated of course

I agree, we should never extend anyone's contracts cause there's a small chance they might leave so what's the point? It's not like majority of players see out their contracts or anything

We had this discussion the other day, but you don’t seem to get it. Somehow you still believe locking him up now would make it guarantee he’d stick around. You still seem to think contracts mean something.

No mate, you don't seem to understand

A contract does not guarantee that a player would stick around, but it clearly HELPS keep a player around. Even if we re-sign him and THEN he leaves him being contracted means we can at least get more out of him leaving

There is literally no negatives and only positives to re-signing someone like Stefano, I'm not sure how you don't understand that. No one is saying it guarantees he will stay, we aren't dumb we've seen players leave contracts many times.

He's being mis used at the dogs too.

They're playing him as a hooker.
He's clearly a lock or 2RF.

Would love to sign him.
