Last time we tried that it worked out alright. Gildart has played at test level against the likes of New Zealand. He has been picked for his country at both junior and senior levels, he has won grand finals. He is a shoe in ahead of a guy that needs to prove he can actually catch a pass and hold onto a ball.

Asofa-Solomona is the sole Melbourne NRL player refusing a COVID vaccination, meaning he was unable to return to pre-season training with the rest of the senior players this week.

Under Victorian government health orders professional athletes must be double-vaxxed to access venues such as the Storm's home ground AAMI Park.

While the Kiwi giant is doing a club-issued home-based gym program, hopes are fading he will get double-jabbed and be fit in time to play round one in early March.

His club captain and Test teammate Bromwich said he had tried to talk to Asofa-Solomona, who has been one of their most damaging forwards.

"I'm very hopeful that 'NAS' will come back, he's a powerful man and a big part of our team," Bromwich said on Friday.


"I know he's got his beliefs around vaccination and it's up to him but we really want him to come back so hopefully the matter resolves itself soon.

"I just don't like this awkwardness between us - I'm very close with him so hopefully we can get it sorted soon."

After Dale Finucane shifted to Cronulla and with Tui Kamikamika in legal trouble, losing another forward by cutting Asofa-Solomona would be a last resort for the Storm.

Canterbury this week parted ways with forward John Asiata, tearing up the 28-year-old's contract after he also refused to be vaccinated.

Speaking of Matterson...if he goes unsigned, do we take him back on a reduced contract? Obviously he probably won't want to come back, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of love for him in the market -no choice. He did play well as an edge br under Madge for most of his stint with us.

Gareth Ellis walked straight in and was one of our best players both have had similar careers both won premierships and represented their country before making the move to NRL only difference is Ellis was a forward and Gildart is a back and apparently he’s doing much better training compared to some of our other boys and I’m not talking about the ones who are injured if Gildart is fit come Round 1 I reckon he’s picked

We have 2 spots left and I'd use them for a starting prop and a starting centre - at the moment IMO those are the 2 positions that we need to help us to step up a notch.
