The Adam Reynolds contract standoff at South Sydney has officially become “pistols at dawn” after the Rabbitohs held a recruitment and retention meeting on Tuesday to re-affirm the club’s position.
The Bunnies remain adamant they will only offer Reynolds a 12-month deal for next season and then assess the Rabbitohs captain’s situation on a year-by-year basis.

The Rabbitohs premiership-winning skipper, local junior and Redfern favourite has stipulated all along he is looking for a minimum two-year deal.

So as much as the negotiation wasn’t hostile to begin with - it’s getting to that stage.

If the Bunnies refuse to budge - as they continue to - then it’s getting more and more likely by the day the champion red and green no.7 won’t be at South Sydney next season.

Contrary to reports, Reynolds’ body is not broken and he’s not about to be forced into an early retirement.

The South Sydney recruitment and retention committee consists of CEO Blake Solly, head of football Mark Ellison, head coach for 2022 Jason Demetriou, chief financial officer Peter Legg and chief operating officer Brock Schaefer.

The Bunnies have outlined the club’s 2023 salary cap position in black and white over the course of the last 24 hours and remain adamant they will not be able to offer Reynolds more than a 12-month deal.

They’ve also got NSW Origin five-eighth and one of the NRL’s form playmakers Cody Walker coming off contract at the end of next year.

The Bunnies clearly want to retain Walker.

Queensland State of Origin players Dane Gagai and Jadyn Su’A are also off contract at the end of this year.

If Reynolds does decide to leave, the Bunnies may opt to retain Benji Marshall for an additional 12 months as they develop young gun playmakers Blake Taaffe and Lachlan Ilias.

Cool we’ll take Reynolds off their hands, offload Brooks to the Cows and Benji can become the main attraction at Souths instead of just impacting off the bench - good luck with that Bunnies! Easy peasy, let’s make it happen!

Lachlan Ilias is one of ours, a Balmain junior.

He has a contract with souths so he is actually there tbh.

True but you know what I mean.

I just cann't believe that a club like the Tigers would not make an offer for a 2 year contract...Reynolds is exactly what this team needs for at least 2 seasons he would catapult the Tigers into top 8 contention Brooks or Reynolds easy choice for mine !And that is an agenda..

Agree I can only hope we as a club would be at least looking into this. 3 Years with the last year in clubs favour. If we could offload Brooks to Cows that would be cream on top. @THE_POM Are you hearing any news on this at your end ??

If South's are not budging on a one year deal for Reynolds there is a problem - not sure why people can't see that. He doesn't want to leave, and if he is forced to he will try to get every dollar possible out of us to do so. If I was in charge of managing the cap in the best interest of the club I wouldn't be offering any thing more than South's.

Yep. I’m happy to fall on my sword here having said that I think we should buy him. Where there is smoke there is fire. Something isn’t right about this.

This forum cares way too much about players personalities... as long as they work hard at training and work hard on the field let's take them. We can't afford to run background checks on players and only sign charity workers.... McGuire is a grub but he would be a solid pickup and footy is what matters

I'm very proud of the fact our club hasn't ever been seen as purveyers of grubby play.
To the point that even the "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Finger" or Tim Simona stuff never left a stigma upon our great clubs name in the same way Storm cheated the cap or Easts Rorters continually seem so flushed for choice or Sharks being found over the cap every year either side of their premiership.

We signed bone-heads before, the most recent having been dropped last week.
Was it last year McGuire got done for eye-gouging?

RCG stated in an interview after the game that if they play like that against a good team they will get beat by 40.... they dont respect us.

We don't make them sweat

I bet they did sweat when we were only 2 points away from them.

Considering they scored at least 2 tries that should have been called back and we had one disallowed that was line ball and played like crap most of the game I would say they should be sweating thinking about what a good team would do to them without them getting all the line ball calls.

Won't be too long before those slimy pretenders start choking again and fail to produce the goods for yet another season.

RCG is just a boof head that needs to learn a bit of respect and someone needs to smash him and his porn star moustache all the way back to the seventies where the moron belongs.

Souths are in salary cap strife
But they should be offloading someone else before Reynolds
Reynolds leaving is a bit like the Benji Marshall situation
But Reynolds is still a great player
How come the Media haven't started bagging south sydney the way they are treating their key player
He is as much a legend for South's as Marshall was for us

Doesn't hurt to have a chat to him, who knows how much he wants? Quality halfbacks are at a premium, worth every cent.

They're scarred because of their deals with Burgess and Inglis and also have major salary cap issues. They have a lot of money already tied up for 2022 and especially 2023 and plenty of spots to fill hence not wanting to give Reynolds a longer deal.

Makes you wonder...Reynolds is Souths…don’t know why he wouldn’t just take the 1 year deal…slay it and make it impossible for them not to re-sign him again…something is not right…

The Herald can reveal the Rabbitohs have more contracted players for 2023 and beyond than any other team in the NRL, a dilemma that would leave the club with an average of just $125,000 to spend on each of the 16 players if they gave Reynolds the two-year extension he desires

Think it’s salary cap issues as much as anything. Given the amount of players they have locked in for 2023 they can’t afford him.

Footy is business, take a one year deal and if he breaks his leg no more money for him. Makes a world of sense for him to want to secure his future. Different story if it's a 22 year old player

Incorrect. No one respects us at all. We're generally considered a laughing stock to most clubs and players.

RCG said on radio yesterday after the game, "We can't afford to play like that against the good sides, we will get flogged."
That is what players think of us, nothing will change if we don't

Don't think there's any argument amongst any league followers that Tigers are not "one of the good sides". Don't worry what RCG thinks of us, if we play well and win games, he'll have no choice but to consider us a good side.

I told my mate that the Souths halves needed to be careful, Benji has a way of undermining the players who are supposed to be ahead of him in the pecking order.

I don't even mean this in a sinister way and I'm not suggesting Benji is doing anything untoward, it's just two (and now three, because I was right) clubs in a row, Benji gets signed as a backup player and ends up overtaking an incumbent and becoming a first-choice play-maker.

Firstly Reynolds was being shifted off the ball in early rounds, in favour of Benji, then his new deal is being capped at 1 year, now talk he's going to move on because of that offer.
