From the telegraph:

The Wests Tigers have lodged an 11th hour bid to sign the game’s hottest property Dale Finucane.

The Tigers have entered the race as it can also be revealed the Knights have ended their pursuit of the Storm and NSW Origin forward.

The 29-year-old’s current club, the Melbourne Storm, are also resigned to the fact that he will be departing the club at the end of this season.

It leaves the Tigers, Sharks, Dragons, Cowboys and Titans locked-in a multi-million dollar scrap for his signature.

All five clubs are believed to have tabled a three-year contract — but Finucane’s management have been pushing hard for an extra year to seal the deal.

Given the physical nature of the way Finucane has played the game and a recent history of calf problems, the majority of the suitors have been reluctant to go beyond a third year.

Regardless, Finucane’s new deal is expected to be in the vicinity of $2 million dollars - a healthy pay-day for a player who is widely respected for his leadership, work-ethic and cultural standards.

It’s understood the Tigers stepped up their bid to sign Finucane after missing out on Tevita Pangai Jr, who is on the move from the Broncos to Canterbury.

It could throw a late curve-ball to the drawn-out negotiations which was expected to be resolved this weekend after he went through the bids with his agent Andrew Purcell on Friday.

Very, very interesting.

We’ll never learn

So the big question is what does the club do to be at least semi competitive?

Saints sign Finucane after an agonisingly close, toss of the coin decision between similar, fantastic, multi-million dollar offers from the Sharks, Titans and Cowboys.
Tigers miss out.
Again.

As footballers alone (not counting off field issues), I'd have JDB over Finucane. JDB just controls the ruck with his defence and has a good offload.

It's looking more and more likely that we will be trotting out basically the same team next year as what we currently have. So 2022 is pretty much a write-off, hopefully 2023 is the year we finally have the cattle to make a impression in the competition.

Don’t hold your breath. 2022 was supposed to be the year that we were to have a clean slate with no Reynolds or Packer. Well, we got grub off the books a year early, and only signed a player no one else wanted (Roberts), and with Packer gone we are signing ESL players. When you see what clubs behind us are doing, it’s depressing. And as hard as it is to stomach hearing the media always stick the boot in, they have a point when you compare our recruitment to other clubs. It’s the worst in the competition and it’s not even close.

Storm recruitment is worse than ours.

We should run from this one. This to me is going to kill the club again.

With Fred De Belin an old Balmain TIger, the chances of getting JDB to WTs may be a bit higher than Finucane, especially after the BBQ incident. I'm not going to get involved in his off field issues.

To me only go for these signings to make other teams pay more. Keep looking at quality development players and guys like Doueihi/Luc who are proven quality players but aren't getting good money or opportunities at their current clubs.

It's the Finucane signings on top dollar that mean we lose our quality development players to other clubs and it stops us getting other players.

I can't see an upside in "competing" for signatures you don't want, just to make other teams bid higher.

In that it just goes to show that it's better to build a team than buy one. ( Roosters excepted ) Storm have signed a part time fullback who can't get a run at the last placed club but are preparing to lose ( seemingly ) the most in demand forward in the game, along with the second leading try scorer. They sound like a real bunch of losers!

Dragons will play hard ball, they're already saying if they don't get him this year they won't sign him at all. They can just refuse a swap knowing we will get stuck with him next year if we can't make a deal, not sure how desperate they are for Mbye

We will only sign players for next year similar to who came in this year. Young guys or journeymen. I had hoped that we would improve this year but after 3 games I knew we were a rabble again.

I thought Tamou was a decent buy for the money - wrong. He has been awful.

Same for JTJ - cheap and IF he could recapture something? Wrong again.

BJ said all the right things in preseason - he’s worse than last year.

I thought Blore would have a good year. Injured before game one and has showed little since.

Noffa - what can you say? Back on easy street for 4 years.

Laurie - he has been wonderful. Very gifted. One of the very few.

Talau - up and down, up and down.

Mbye - nuff said

Brooks has been doing ok.

Joffa - hot and cold but better than most of our forwards.

Twal - same ol, same ol.

Garner - average, bog average.

Douehi - started ok at 5/8 then got worse. Put in centres did ok then got worse. Back at 5/8 good game again. Let’s see if he stays consistent now.

Liddle - started ok but average now

J Simpkin - did ok I thought but rested and not seen again.

Tuki - one game but did enough. Fingers crossed.

Seyfarth - doing ok. Has a good dig.

I can only see similar signings for the next few years. This system where you sign 6 or 7 players and hope one turns out exceptional.

Daine Laurie is this years exceptional one.

The coach at the Dragons doesn't seem the type to stand for nonsense. The other big plus with De Belin, he has had two years off football. His body is in better shape than Finucanes. Some may have strong views to the contrary but we need to take all our opportunities to strengthen the roster.

I really don't know why WT don't hand-deliver Mbye to Saints door immediately. He is no use to us for the rest of this season, he isn't going to be the reason we sneak into the 8 or miss out. It is the only way of getting him off our books for decent remuneration for '22. It needs to happen.

It could throw a late curve-ball to the drawn-out negotiations which was expected to be resolved this weekend after he went through the bids with his agent Andrew Purcell on Friday.

Very, very interesting.

We’ll never learn

So the big question is what does the club do to be at least semi competitive?

To me only go for these signings to make other teams pay more. Keep looking at quality development players and guys like Doueihi/Luc who are proven quality players but aren't getting good money or opportunities at their current clubs.

It's the Finucane signings on top dollar that mean we lose our quality development players to other clubs and it stops us getting other players.

That’s some Machiavellian stuff right there . This year is a very week free agency class IMO. We have TPJ finucane , Josh Addo Carr , Maybe Brandon Smith and …. Daylight to anything else .
Sorry Hynes has hit a once in a lifetime purple patch , and got paid . His form this year is scary , considering he’s never done it at any level prior . And always been in the “he goes alright” type of player.

I honestly think Simpkins , Uto ,Simpkin , AD , Laurie , Kei, Blore could cost a fortune ina few years . And tying up 800k of that coin on Finucane seems like a bad idea. Brandon Smith though , that would be a good idea

Let me guess how this plays out....

Would he leave the coast though ? He’s pretty entrenched in the community down here . It’s a long way to concord .Plus the whole rape stuff is pretty on the nose . Whether it’s true or not , unfortunately everybody is guilty in the court of social media outrage .

With the Dragons wanting Mbye, a swap seems a logical step. Mick Cronin use to travel from Gerringong to Parramatta to train and play,

Dragons will play hard ball, they're already saying if they don't get him this year they won't sign him at all. They can just refuse a swap knowing we will get stuck with him next year if we can't make a deal, not sure how desperate they are for Mbye

The coach at the Dragons doesn't seem the type to stand for nonsense. The other big plus with De Belin, he has had two years off football. His body is in better shape than Finucanes. Some may have strong views to the contrary but we need to take all our opportunities to strengthen the roster.

sorry mate, but I can't agree on this one. Jack De Belin is the last person I would want at this club and that includes Matt Lodge. he was never proven innocent and regardless of whether or not he was guilty, he cheated on his pregnant wife with an 18 year old he met at the Santa pub crawl one day at North gong. he's a gronk.

After all the dragons did with JDB I'd be surprised if either him or the dragons would want him leaving.

I really don't know why WT don't hand-deliver Mbye to Saints door immediately. He is no use to us for the rest of this season, he isn't going to be the reason we sneak into the 8 or miss out. It is the only way of getting him off our books for decent remuneration for '22. It needs to happen.

It all depends on how much dragons will pay I guess - no point of letting him go if dragons won't pay half his contract. If they do then I'll drive him there myself
