I was initially of the opinion that grabbing Thompson wasn't necessary because of our current middle forward stocks, but if we're going to continue to be embarrassed conceding 50 points, we're going to need to focus on our defence. Thompson and Twal would be about as good a duo you could get defensively in the middle. Stefano while impressive offensively, has some way to go defensively but I'm sure he'll pick it up.
I do have to wonder where our cap money is going next year and I really wish the NRL had public salary cap statistics. I look at our team compared to some others and just can't seem to understand how we're reaching 10 million next year, especially considering the remainder of Reynold's, approx. half of Mbye's and Packer + Leilua's is coming off the books. We can't be paying Hastings and Gildart that much can we?
The Cotric and Lomax rumours turned out to be fluff but boy it would've been nice if they were true given the way our right edge seems to collapse in a heap every time the opposition approaches.
That's the problem with forcing clubs to spend the cap. Low grade players get good dollars at low grade clubs.
Right now, Brooks is probably only worth $400-500k. We are paying him $800-900k I think. Comparatively, Tedesco is on about $1 million a season. You can't win when you have to pay Brooks around the same coin as a Tedesco.
Not hating on Brooks. Just highlighting what Roosters, Souths or Storm might pay for him in the current market.
Interestingly, the Bulldogs seem to have paid "overs" for JAC, Burton, Cotric, Pangai etc., yet this has snowballed their recruitment to the point where I believe that quality younger players may take less to play with that group. Time will tell of course, and they have arguably chosen the wrong players to throw money at, but perhaps the thinking has some merit.
Not even giving an opinion here, just throwing out some thoughts for discussion.
