FLANNO IN TIGERS’ DEN?

Cronulla premiership-winning coach Shane Flanagan has emerged as a potential addition to Michael Maguire’s coaching staff at the Wests Tigers.

It is understood Flanagan is keen to return to the coaching ranks and will put up his hand to assist Maguire, who is on the lookout for a new member of his staff.

Flanagan has made no secret of his plans to step back into a full-time coaching role having spent this season in the commentary box with Fox League and 2GB.

The experienced mentor headlines a host of coaches already linked to the role, including Dean Pay, Brett White, David Furner and Shaun Wane.

Flanagan worked as an assistant last year at the Dragons in what was his first coaching position since leaving the Sharks at the end of 2018. He initially started as the attack coach but moved onto looking after the defensive side of the team.

The Tigers are on the lookout for a defensive specialist after Maguire’s assistant Wayne Collins was the big casualty of the Tigers’ highly publicised review.

Maguire will have a say into who he appoints but the decision will be left to the club’s football committee. Under the revised structure at the Tigers, Maguire has agreed to forego some of his autonomy in return for the club taking a more collaborative approach to their recruitment of his offsiders.

Is Slothfield still trying get his mate a gig at the Tigers?

Of course he is

Brandon Smith open to offers from Nov 1.
Wests Tigers please have a $1m x 4 year offer on 12.01am November 1.

https://www.zerotackle.com/storm-star-speaks-out-about-future-contract-after-meeting-with-rival-club-110260/amp/

“Smith hinted that he'd be unlikely to trade success for mediocrity when acknowledging the clubs he had been linked with, with the Storm just 80 minutes away from yet another grand final - a campaign Smith has had a major hand in.

“I’ve been linked with the Titans, the Tigers and the Bulldogs ... geez, they are all going great at the moment," Smith said.”

That answers that. What other options are there?

I think $1m a year would make him.reconsider.

If I was WT I'd being making him a priority and going all in - have no idea how the other clubs could compete for dollars with us given they all have marquee players

Id be paying him $700k for his playing ability and $300k for his 'will to win which this club desperately needs.

Make it $1m for 5 years.

We won’t be the only club offering him big money. He’ll have much better options. Btw, a couple weeks ago I got 5 or 6 downvotes for saying he’d laugh in our face if we made an offer. And wouldn’t you know, old GNR was right.

That would not surprise me. As long as Flanagan doesn't try to whiteant Madge, I have no problem with him as an assistant coach.

Having Flanagan in situ ready to slot in when the inevitable happens is great forward planning.

So..not so much improving the Wests Tigers at all..?

Should be by round 5 when we take our 4th loss by 40+ points. I can see the article from Lee now

He’s not going to come here as a Lone Ranger, same reason we have failed to land a plethora of marquee guys. We need to find 3-4 good value players in their prime at around 500-600 that will actually play above that salary. Finding them is the huge ask.

A big merry-go-round of mediocrity.
That's ok, we are rebuilding. Again....
Roosters rebuild lasted 1 year.
Melbourne lost campy, arguably best player in the game, unchanged.
Instead of complaining how good these teams are, let's be better than them.

Look back a few years. Souths were a joke. In comes privatisation and now they're a powerhouse.
We need to go private for the good of the club.
We need to be answerable to someone other than the flogs in the boardroom

Not to mention had them in the top 4 after that. NRL have recently started posting old finals games on YouTube, look at the 2018 sharks team that almost made the GF. Even the GF winning side was average

There also appears to be little knowledge (from a lot of pundits) about our junior pathways programs, as it’s often mentioned of late and usually advised every time.

In defence of Gus, he signed on for Bulldogs after they'd done all their recent signings?

https://youtu.be/F0pQcK8jVzo Dillon looks very good

THats actually a pretty impressive reel for a change. Hate to say it but runs like Teddy.

Dont see it

Something about the way he lowers his body height as he hits top gear.

Think Ted had more speed at his age.

Don't know about that - Dillon can motor - he's on par with Papenhuyzen for speed.

You reckon?

Absolutely, aside from Jordan Hill who spent most of the season injured, Dillon is the quickest player in the the WT Flegg team.

Going off his highlights I see a bit of Reese Walsh style in him.

I almost think he's a Tedesco/Papenhuyzen hybrid. he looks a very very good prospect. he has the strength, pace and evasion required to return the ball and make things happen off attacking shapes, but I was just as excited by his long balls, even though they need some work. he has all the tools, just needs some refining. wouldn't surprise me if he moves Laurie to 6 or 14 in the next few years.

I see him as our long term fullback and he reminds me more of Papenhuyzen with how he moves - absolutely electric off the mark and not afraid to play through the middle. Covers the 100m in about 11 seconds which is on par with Pap. Jordan Hill is a little quicker and hopefully Hartigan can convince him to stay.

What’s the current status with Hill? Was he signed , signing with Cutters or in talks with them? Is it due to the uncertainty around whether the comp will start up again next year?

WT have been late to the party in re-signing him due to his ACL injury. There's some moves planned to try and keep him as he's not quite locked into going to Mackay just yet.

Is he from Queensland originally? I know he was part of the Holy Cross footy team but do you know how long he has been in our system.

What is the lure to Mackay?

I think @Aubanon has some links to Jordan Hill? Maybe he
Can post to tell us exactly what’s going on with him

Hey Guys;

- Jordan is a local - lives in Putney, went to Gladesville Public and then Holy Cross
- Has a family link to Mackay and as they showed him some love, lined up potential suitable employment and a pathway to Cowboys he signed heads of agreement type doc
- Tigers finally got wind and made direct contact with family
- A meeting was discussed (Yet to be arranged)

Are you confident he stays?

The family just wants to see a proper plan around him development wise - not this 1 year stuff (Even if it has incentive clauses due to ACL concerns). He loves his teammates and the club and wanted to stay loyal.

Honestly - if the tigers pulled their fingers out - I would say 100%. Realistaclly, 50:50 ATM

@willow check this post.

Thanks mate. @Aubanon
Appreciate all your info and keeping us in the loop.
Legend.

All over this Demps, I for one hope the club pulls its finger out, follows through with the meeting and a favourable outcome can be reached. To me it highlights the pitfalls of putting an amateur in charge of junior recruitment.

Who looks after junior recruitment?

And will it change under new model?

Some bloke named Fita Hala, and yes I hope so because this bloke has fallen asleep at the wheel with Jordan Hill.

Googled him.
Not impressed.

Was at the Warriors briefly.

Why do i feel like I could do some of these guys jobs better than them?

Probably because you could.

I am sure Gus would be quite concerned about all the overs the dogs have paid to stitch together a squad for 2022.When it all unravels and they are underachieving look for Gus to do a fire sale of the overpaid players.I doubt he will rebuild the team in the same haphazard way of quick fixes like they have been doing over the last few years.

Where is the recent talk of the rebuild that isn't in the media? Maguire has said, from day one, that he is trying to drag the club into being a powerhouse and that is where the rebuild started. It didn't start last week after the review was announced.

And before you say how long does it take to rebuild? Well, If a tree hits your roof and you have some tiles to fix, doesn't take long. If your house was in Pompeii when it was obliterated by a volcano that wasn't your fault, may take a bit longer - and you don't blame the builder coming into to fix it.

Smith is a major injury waiting to happen the way he plays. A big risk for big money. He has barely got through this year with head knocks etc. Brave but Storm have been lucky to get so many games out of him this year.
