Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

I've been told by a pretty decent source that Ash Taylor is close to signing with us. Not a done deal but apparently we are in talks

Doesn't make much sense to be with us having four halves on the roster already. I know Doueihi will miss some games and Hastings is an unknown quantity but seems a bit pointless to me. Not sure on length or cost

Doesn’t seem like the type to respond to Madge?

Niukore I read is on around 500-550k at the eels, hard to believe when he is often overlooked or coming off the bench

Mm no I don’t think that’s right. I think that’s what he’s been offered by the dragons and warriors

Via fox sports

Clint Gutherson $750,000, Dylan Brown $500,000, Ryan Matterson $550,000, Reed Mahoney $550,000, Isaiah Papali’i $600,000, Junior Paulo $700,000 and Marata Niukore $550,000 are all off contract and are worth a total of $4,200,000 based on their projected base rates for their next contract.

When that was published and discussed on nrl 360. They couldn’t confirm all the figures and actually put the table together with estimate value if they were to go to market.

2 things on this one..

1. He would come cheap and needs to prove himself again..

2. Maybe we are offloading a certain half?

Anyway thanks for the info and getting the tread back on track..

I read a Fox article which indicated the Warriors were chasing Luke Metcalfe from the Sharks. He's a very exciting player who tore our 'right side defence' to shreds.

Strange. With all these clubs looking for halfbacks looking to sign running halves in place of organisers yet we continually criticise Luke Brooks for not ‘controlling’ a game.

Think it’s more he’s criticised for not being good at anything. If he was a strong ball runner and nothing else we’d be happy. Heard a stat this year that when 7s ran for higher than their season average, their teams win rate increased. Take for example Mitch Moses. All his best games this season, he was constantly running the ball and I think the same for DCE.

Taylor is a highly talented player and if on his game will be a huge asset to WTs.

We need depth in the halves. Madden won’t cut it. I’d take
Him if he is dirt cheap on a 1 year deal

Interesting question you pose - who is better: Ash Taylor or Madden?

Brent Read reporting that Martin Niukore is most likely going to leave the Eels and is available to talk to come November 1st

He can play second row, centre and in the middle effectively and should 100% be a target of ours. Sign him for 2023 and agitate for an early release

Don’t think I’ve seen him play,
Older or younger than Marata?

I definitely meant Marata lol

Most over rated stat ever. Halves run when there is space, usually because their team is dominating or has momentum. I constantly hear so called expert commentators using this and it isn’t that simple. I a team is on the back foot and getting dominated the half isn’t going to be running, that’s the forwards job.

Taylor has all the potential in the world and a change of scenery could do him the world of good. He is 26yrs old played 115 games has a few more years left in him. Last 2yrs 35 games, 5 tries, 21 try assists, 27 errors & 82% tackle effectiveness. His stats are above Brooks in attack & errors but defence Brooks has him at 86%

Madden is young at 21 only 3 games in, no idea if he will make it but in his games he never over played his hand and considering he hadn’t played any footy for nearly 3mths held his own against some of the biggest backrowers going around. I think he has looked composed and considering the scenario in which he was playing he has some upside to build off.

Why not have both?

I always thought he was a strong running half. Hid he isn’t a hole running half but he runs good meters mostly into traffic.
Hard to quantify though when the only stats you can go off in nrl.com and foxsports are about 30rm a game off. Thought his run meter average was decent this year. Nrl.com has him 97m and fox has him at 60m.
Huge to expect him to run over 97m a game but you are correct in that his best games and most often our winning games he has high running meters.
183m vs the knights
117m vs the panthers
108m vs the Broncos
176m in the narrow loss v warriors
109m vs the cowboys

Exactly, we need the depth. Ash provides experience

Sheens gonna get the best out of him?

I’ll be cheesed off if Sheens doesn’t get him here?

You'd be conditioned to the mediocrity so It won't impact you if he doesn't sign.
